Ann and Alan were met on their 05:45 arrival at Auckland International Airport by the tour leader, Wynston Cooper of Nature Quest New Zealand, and transferred to the Hotel Grand Chancellor in downtown Auckland where the other members of the party who had arrived earlier, and co-leader Geoff Henderson were waiting. After introductions all round, a shower, and a coffee or two, we were off to begin our explorations. Auckland, the largest urban area in New Zealand, contains more than a third of the country’s total population and thereby suffers from the same traffic congestion problems as many other major cities around the world – most noticeably crawling lines of vehicles on motorways! Centred on an ancient volcanic field on a neck of land bounded in the west by the Manukau harbour and in the east by the waters of the Hauraki Gulf, it extends far to the north and south.
