“This is my Body, which is for you.”

In these past months when participation in the Eucharist has been unavailable, many have joined in making a Spiritual Communion. That awareness and prayer has also helped me be more attentive and intentional about receiving the Eucharist … not simply a quick action before I distribute Communion to others as part of the Mass, but an inexpressibly profound moment of being one with Jesus Himself. Just as fasting from regular food makes us appreciate the very act of eating and nourishment in a new way, so this prolonged Eucharistic fast leads us with deeper gratitude into Corpus Christi.

Why does Jesus give Himself to us in the Eucharist? There is no other explanation than the sheer goodness and love of God toward each of us, and all of us.

So while there is suffering, sorrow, and evil in our fallen world, there is also – and infinitely stronger – the presence of Mercy, Grace, and Love. The power of sin and death have been defeated, and the One Who has done so gives us His Body and Blood, the literal sharing of His own life with and within us.

As St. Augustine said so powerfully: “In the Eucharist, God has given us “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will everything. Although God is all-powerful, He is unable to give more; though live forever; and the bread that I will give supremely wise, He knows not how to give more; though vastly rich, He has not is my flesh for the life of the world.” more to give.” Excerpts from the Lectionary for Mass ©2001, 1998, 1970 CCD. © LPi

Statement from Kettler (June 5, 2020)

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ:

Recently, we celebrated the feast of Pentecost, in which we rejoice at the unity in diversity that makes our Church the beautiful reality it is. We also continue to mourn the loss of George Floyd, who brutally lost his life on May 25 while in police custody.

For us as Christians, “unity in diversity” recognizes that we are all made in the image of God. We are all God’s children – one family, no matter the color of our skin. Prejudice and all forms of racial discrimination, therefore, must be rejected as actions against God’s will.

Yet, we know these problems persist. Our diocese is part of a beautiful state, but prejudice and racial disparities exist in many sectors in our state – from housing and employment to the criminal justice and education systems. These disparities cause great suffering for people of color and are an affront to their God-given dignity.

I have heard many people express the question, “What can I do?” The answer isn’t simple. Fr. Tom continued on page 2 Fr. Tom continued from page 1 Cluster Directory Real change will require a determined, long-term PRIESTS commitment.
