In the tradition of our founding teacher, Zen Master Seung Sahn, he spent his life as a teacher traveling and teaching, not set- tlingO permanently in any one place, and dedicating his activities to spreading the dharma. As the head teacher for the Kwan Um School of Zen in Europe, he shep- herded the growth of the school. His eorts persist in the owering of our school in Europe and the teaching activities of the Zen masters and Ji Do Poep Sas, who were so close to him and continue his works to guide the practice, made now more poignant by his death. We oer this issue as a tribute, compiled from around the world by the European sangha. It contains excerpts of his teachings and oerings by students and colleagues. In the Korean tradition, Zen masters who have died, as well as those over 60, are referred to by the title Dae Soen Sa Nim, which means "Great Zen Master." In recognition of the title conferred on him, we refer to him here as Wu Bong Dae Soen Sa Nim. May his example sharpen our own apprecia- tion of Zen practice as the great work of life and death. Wu Bong Dae Soen Sa Nim 4] Zen Master Ji Kwang search for a teacher, he went to a Tibetan lama, Tarthang Tulku, for one year to practice Tibetan Buddhism. While he was a student at Brown University in Provi- dence, he trained in Shim Gum Do and became a mas- ter in this martial art. In 1972, during his time at the university, he met Zen Master Sueng Sahn and became one of his rst students. In the same year he did his rst hundred-day solo retreat. He was 22 years old. Also he took ve precepts and received his Buddhist name, Poep Mu, which means Empty Dharma or No Dharma. In 1973 he graduated from Brown University with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. Afterward he did more retreats, and in 1978, together with Zen Master Seung Sahn, he returned for the rst time to Europe—to Poland, his motherland—where from that time onward a sangha developed that grew and became the largest sangha in our ur dear Zen master, Wu Bong Dae Soen Sa Nim, European school. was born on June 22, 1950, in Wroclaw, Poland, In 1978 he did his second solo retreat in America. When you hold the legendary sword, you can kill or grant life, as the moment dictates. Chinese come, foreigners go: foreigners come, Chinese go. In death there is already life: in life there is already death. Now tell me, what can you do? Unless your eye can penetrate all barriers and your body is free to make any turn, you can’t do a thing. But what is this eye that can penetrate all barriers? What is this body that is free to make any turn? Read this kong-an and see: A monk asked Jo-ju, “What is Jo-ju?” Jo Ju answered, “ East Gate, West Gate, South Gate, North Gate.” Strange language. We usually think that when a man dies he is dead, and when he lives he is alive. But in this language, life is death, death is life. Where does life come from? Where does death go? Life and death are only thinking. You must go beyond life and death. That is infinite life. It is “like this.” “Like this” is Jo-Ju’s original face. Mountains are mountains, rivers are rivers: yellow is yellow, red is red. Jo-Ju’s teacher, Nam Chan, said that everyday mind is the Way. Everyday mind is the mind that cuts off all thinking. It is the same as a mirror: when the beautiful comes, it is beautiful: When the ugly comes, it is ugly.

    Prologue Before the division of heaven and earth there is only one, which is round: Universe has no name and appearance and the Light fills infinite time and space. There are no Good and Evil in intrinsic nature; The Holy and the Worldly are false names. In front of the door is the quiet and illuminated land. Spring has come, so grass grows. This world in which we live consists of a bright side and a dark side, the sky and the earth, a man and a woman. There is both good and bad. There is happiness and sadness. There are the blessed and the damned. It is time and space which control the Universe. We are here and we are gone. But contrary to what we think, though good and bad, life is what you make it. The universe is empty, but full. Infinity in time and an infinity in space which is definite. When we are feeling we are not thinking, just learning. All things that have appearances are transient. If we view all appearances as non-appearances, then we will see the true nature of all things. I talked about his going to Shim Gum Do School with him. Zen is keeping your correct situation moment to moment. Then, you will understand the correct way and the truth. Mu Ryeom Su Nim is a monk. A monk has a monk’s situation. He became a monk only one year ago, so we say he is a baby monk. Baby monks don’t understand monk’s situation, monk’s rules, monk’s job. This is very important. Then, after, coming and going everywhere is no problem. But now Mu Ryeom Su Nim is a baby monk, so living with monks and correct style strong practicing is very important. I did not talk about coming and going. I only talked to him about what is correct monk’s situation. Then he heard this and decided. So, you ask him.
