Falkner was a prominent lawyer, politician, businessman and soldier, serving in both the Mexican War and the American Civil War, and ultimately rising to the rank of Colonel in the Confederate Army. “NOT GONE OR VANISHED EITHER:” WILLIAM FAULKNER’S USE OF MEMEORY AND IMAGINATION By Kevin Daniel Gleason A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of English The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Chattanooga, Tennessee May 2011 ii Copyright © 2011 By Kevin Daniel Gleason All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT This thesis examines the role that memory and imagination play in three of William Faulkner’s novels: The Sound and the Fury, Absalom, Absalom! and The Unvanquished. While most scholars perceive Faulkner’s characters as burdened, debilitated, and destroyed by the past, I argue that Faulkner presents a wide spectrum of engagement with the past which includes the potential for memory to serve as a tool of redemption and power. Henri Bergson’s notion of the fluidity of all time past, present, and future forms the center of Faulkner’s understanding of time, and in this paradigm, Faulkner’s characters are capable of creating and re-creating their pasts through memory and projecting their futures through imagination. In emphasizing Dilsey’s role as a rememberer in The Sound and the Fury, Shreve’s role as an imaginer in Absalom, Absalom!, and Bayard Sartoris’s role as defeater of his cultural and familial past in The Unvanquished, I demonstrate that while Faulkner does present memory and imagination as harmful forces, he also illustrates their potential for preservation and redemption. iv DEDICATION I would like to dedicate this thesis to my wife, Kathleen Gleason, who supported and encouraged me through every step of the process. -

RSA Journal 12 61 GRAZIELLA FANTINI Faulkner's War Birds / A Ghost Story: a Screenplay and its Relationship with Faulkner's Fiction This brief essay is an excerpt from a project1 which analyzes the relations between Faulkner's film work and his fiction, where I have emphasized a number of connections that point out the great importance of Faulkner's "second" career. These connections challenge many critics who consider Faulkner's production in Hollywood simply a business. It is clear that Faulkner worked differently in writing fiction and in writing for the studios, and that he was aware that motion pictures were not his own medium,2 but he took his work seriously, nonetheless. The analysis of Faulkner's screenplay War Birds / A Ghost Story emphasizes his great ability in dealing with important themes also in his "secondary" Hollywood works — themes such as peace and war, death and life, love and hate, suffering, the burden of the past, tradition, the family, and others. The script is set partly in Jefferson; its protagonists are John and Bayard Sartoris, taken from Flags in the Dust and several of his World War I stories; the work thus must be seen as part of the Yoknapatawpha myth. It offers us an example of how Faulkner extended and clarified themes of his major fiction in his screcnwriting. War Birds / A Ghost Story was Faulkner's second full-length film script written for Howard Hawks during his first period in Hollywood, when he worked at the MGM. According to Bruce Kawin,3 the screenplay was written "between late November 1932 and early January 1933" (257). -

SHEFTALL DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH ATLANTA, GEORGIA August 1969 \ , i"! PREFACE This paper deals with William Faulkner's treatment of women in his major novels. These major works of his time of genius began in 1929 with the publication of Sartoris, the first indication that he had settled upon both a place---the legendary Yoknapatawpha County--- and a manner for his work. In the same year appeared The Sound and the Fury, one of the most important novels of the century. These two were followed by As I_ Lay Dying (1930) and Sanctuary (1931), both written quickly and as "tours de force." In 1932, Light in August followed and in 1936, Absalom, Absalom! These six novels have been referred to by many critics as the core of Faulkner's major achieve ment. The novels introduce the special world of Yoknapatawpha County and offer an elaborate description of its topography and its people. ^-Unfortunately, the most extensive studies of Faulkner's women up until now, are unpublished theses. In 'William Faulkner: His ' Characterization and Use of Women" (Ohio State University, 1957) the author views his women as four types of symbolic sinfulness.' Nancy McFadden, in "Faulkner's Women in the Structure of the Yoknapatawpha World" (M.A. thesis, University of North Carolina, 1959), classifies women characters as weak, "relief figures," promis cuous, calm and serene, and strong and enduring. -

major work" but not "an unqualified success" p. 22) reveals Joyce's "realization that emotional, intellectual, and spiritual exile can be embodied in the domestic relation of the husband and wife ... crucial to his analysis of the artist's alienation from the community ..." (p. 24). Ulysses reveals "the possibility that the sympathy and compassion an ideal love would promote would enable man to escape the prison of self, to merge with the community"; but it also emphasizes "the enormous difficulty of realizing this ideal love" in the modern world (p. 28). Finally, in Finnegans Wake die theme extends to the audience "because comedy and complexity demand similar and corresponding abilities in the reader to participate emotionally and intellectually in the author's vision. Joyce views the individual's capacity for laughter as yet another index of his capacity for love; both love and laughter take the individual out of himself... and foster a communion of minds between the artist and his audience" (p. 31 ). The book "becomes the model for Joyce's theme of the transcendence of the ego, to commune with humanity through the celebration of die common connections within the community" (p. 33). From this bald summary, Rice's approach may seem reductive, but he does not claim to offer the key to an interpretation of his subject. Instead, it enables him to focus his account and view die corpus steadily, die parts in a coherent relationship to the whole. The approach does lead Rice to neglect Joyce's fictional strategies. He does not analyze die limited point of view and its relation to style in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. -

Towner Course Description and Requirements William Faulkner, the Mississippi-born writer who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1950, wrote nineteen novels, well over a hundred short stories, some middling poetry, and a few fables which he illustrated himself. This course will introduce you to several of his most well-regarded novels and short stories. Throughout the semester, we will investigate recurrent patterns and themes in the fiction set largely in Faulkner’s mythical Mississippi county, Yoknapatawpha. Four assignments, each worth 25% of your course grade, will be turned in on time throughout the semester. These assignments include two exams, an oral report on and accompanying summary of a Faulkner novel not on the common reading list, and a final examination. Course requirements also include attendance and participation, and the quality of those two elements will decide cases of borderline grades. Please note that you must complete all of the required work for the course and that failure to do so will result in failure of the course. The use of electronic devices in class is not permitted. You cannot hope to pass the course if you do not attend it. I do not accept late work, schedule makeup exams, or issue grades of Incomplete. All cases of deliberate academic dishonesty will be referred to the University’s judiciary officer for adjudication and punishment. Penalties for plagiarism include failure of the assignment in question, failure of the course, and expulsion from the University. Towner Excerpt More information Chapter 1 Life William Cuthbert Falkner was born late at night on September 25, 1897, and died early in the morning of July 6, 1962; were we to honor his wishes on the matter of his biography, we would not inquire into it any further than that. He was a quiet and intensely private man who once observed that “it is my ambition to be, as a private individual, abolished and voided from history”; “in the same sentence is my obit and epitaph too, shall be them both: He made the books and he died” (FCF 126). In his fiction, subconsciously and on purpose, Faulkner used the materials of his life in very subtle, often tertiary ways, and more than one biographer has gone terribly astray while trying to use the life to explain his work or the work to explain his life. Another problem in writing Faulkner’s biography is raised by the fact that he was first and foremost a fiction writer. When asked a question about his private life, he was just as likely to make something up as he was when he sat at his typewriter at home inventing characters and plots. Early in his career, for example, he wrote to an editor who had asked for biographical information that he was “Born male and single at early age in Mississippi. Quit school after five years in seventh grade. Got job in Grandfather’s bank and learned medicinal value of his liquor. -

Chronotopes of law in William Faulkner’s novels, 1930-19391 by Cinzia Scarpino The recurrence of the chronotopes of law in Faulkner’s work is to be read in Bakhtinian terms, as a sign of the novel capacity to represent heteroglossia of ever-changing social formations. It is important to bear in mind that (Faulkner’s) novels are the product of the discursive permeability between different social languages, generated by their cultural contiguity, built out of historical contingencies (Hannon 2005: 159). 1 The following essay is an excerpt from Anni Trenta alla sbarra: giustizia e letteratura nella Grande Depressione (Milano, Ledizioni), a forthcoming book focused on the representation of law and justice in American literature during the Great Depression. More specifically, this essay is a preview of the last chapter of the book and analyzes the narrative function of chronotopes of law within four novels written in the 1930s by William Faulkner: As I Lay Dying (1930), Sanctuary (1931), Light in August (1932), If I Forget Thee, Jerusalem (1939). With the exception of Pylon (1935), Absalom, Absalom!
