OKLAHOMA STAFF sunny golloway www.soonersports.com 59 2009 OKLAHOMA BASEBALL MEDIA GUIDE ELLIOTT BLAIR HEAD COACH SUNNY GOLLOWAY Head Coach | Fifth Year at Oklahoma (127-78-1) 29 HEAD COACH Sunny Golloway has led the Sooners to three NCAA Regional Finals, 127 victories and a top 25 rank- 13th year, 462-234-1 (.664) career record ing in each season during his four years at the helm of the OU program. In 2008, OU returned to the NCAA Tournament for the 31st time in program history, two years after Golloway became the second COACHING HISTORY coach in NCAA Division I history to guide his club to a Super Regional Appearance in his fi rst year at Oklahoma, head coach 2005-present the helm. The 2006 season was highlighted by the Sooners’ 45-22 overall mark, a third-place fi nish in Oklahoma, assistant coach 2004-05 the Big 12 and an NCAA regional title, a program fi rst since 1995. By:AARaymond H.R.ANo.A2002 RESOLUTION 1 WHEREAS, University of Texas sports fans bade farewell to a 2 renowned college baseball coach with the passing of August Edmun 3 Garrido Jr. on March 15, 2018, at the age of 79; and 4 WHEREAS, Augie Garrido was born in Vallejo, California, on 5 February 6, 1939; a member of the Fresno State University baseball 6 team, he was named all-conference and competed in the 1959 College 7 World Series; following graduation in 1961, he signed with the 8 Cleveland Indians and played six seasons in the minor leagues; and 9 WHEREAS, After launching his coaching career in 1966 at 10 Sierra High School in Tollhouse, California, Mr.AGarrido rose to 11 the college ranks when he became head coach at San Francisco State 12 University in 1969, and he took charge of the Cal Poly program the 13 following year; named head coach at California State University, 14 Fullerton, in 1973, he produced three College World Series 15 champions in 21 total years with the Titans, and he also won two Big 16 10 Conference titles at the University of Illinois; and 17 WHEREAS, Coach Garrido brought his distinctive coaching 18 style to The University of Texas at Austin in 1997; under his 19 guidance, the Longhorns broke a six-year drought with a berth in the 20 2000 College World Series and went on to make seven additional CWS 21 appearances and to claim two national championships; UT also won 22 seven Big 12 Conference titles during his tenure, and when he 23 retired in 2016, he was college baseball 's all-time winningest 24 coach with -

NCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONS: 1965, 1967, 1969, 1977, 1981 2005 SUN DEVIL BASEBALL 3 ASU AND THE GOLDEN SPIKES AWARD > For the past 26 years, USA Baseball has honored the top amateur baseball player in the country with the Golden Spikes Award. (See winners box.) The award is presented each year to the player who exhibits exceptional athletic ability and exemplary sportsmanship. Past winners of this prestigious award include current Major League Baseball stars J. D. Drew, Pat Burrell, Jason Varitek, Jason Jennings and Mark Prior. > Arizona State’s Bob Horner won the inaugural award in 1978 after hitting .412 with 20 doubles and 25 RBI. Tony Robichaux 1961-2019
IN MEMORIAM TONY ROBICHAUX 1961-2019 Tony Robichaux spent 25 seasons as the leader of the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns and took the baseball program to new heights. Robichaux coached 29 All-Americans, five Academic All-Americans, 90 All-Sun Belt players and 55 All-Louisiana players in his 25 years with the Cajuns. During that time, he coached six Sun Belt Pitchers of the Year, two Sun Belt Players of the Year, two Sun Belt Newcomers of the Year, three Sun Belt Freshmen of the Year, three All-Louisiana Pitchers of the Year, one All-Louisiana Player of the Year and five All-Louisiana Newcomers of the Year. Robichaux took Louisiana to its only College World Series appearance in 2000 and won over 1,000 career games. Yet, that’s not how Robichaux will be remembered. He will be remembered and honored as someone who left behind a legacy of servant leadership and compassion that extended beyond the baseball diamond and into the lives of the thousands of student- athletes and staff he impacted during his career.
