Psalms for Adults - Week 6 Psalms for Adults - Week 6 It’s fitting to revisit the Psalms of Lament during Holy Week. May you experience solidarity with Christ and all His people as you pray these psalms. - Pastor Mike So it is right and fair for you Psalm 13 - A Prayer for the LORD’s Help to correct and punish me. 5 I have sinned and done wrong 1 How much longer, LORD, since the day I was born. will you forget about me? 6 But you want complete honesty, Will it be forever? so teach me true wisdom. How long will you hide? 7 Wash me with hyssop 2 How long must I be confused until I am clean and miserable all day? and whiter than snow. How long will my enemies 8 Let me be happy and joyful! keep beating me down? You crushed my bones, now let them celebrate. 3 Please listen, LORD God, 9 Turn your eyes from my sin and answer my prayers. and cover my guilt. Make my eyes sparkle again, 10 Create pure thoughts in me or else I will fall and make me faithful again. into the sleep of death. 11 Don’t chase me away from you 4 My enemies will say, or take your Holy Spirit “Now we’ve won!” away from me. They will be greatly pleased when I am defeated. 12 Make me as happy as you did when you saved me; 5 I trust your love, make me want to obey! and I feel like celebrating 13 I will teach sinners your Law, because you rescued me. and they will return to you. 6 You have been good to me, LORD, 14 Keep me from any deadly sin. and I will sing about you. Only you can save me! Then I will shout and sing Psalm 51-A Prayer for Forgiveness about your power to save. 1 You are kind, God! 15 Help me to speak, Please have pity on me. and I will praise you, Lord. You are always merciful! 16 Offerings and sacrifices Please wipe away my sins. are not what you want. 2 Wash me clean from all 17 The way to please you of my sin and guilt. is to feel sorrow 3 I know about my sins, deep in our hearts. and I cannot forget This is the kind of sacrifice my terrible guilt. you won’t refuse. 4 You are really the one I have sinned against; 18 Please be willing, Lord, I have disobeyed you to help the city of Zion and have done wrong. and to rebuild its walls. 1 Psalms for Adults - Week 6 19 Then you will be pleased 6 I wait for you more eagerly with the proper sacrifices, than a soldier on guard duty and we will offer bulls waits for the dawn. on your altar once again. Yes, I wait more eagerly than a soldier on guard duty Psalm 126 - Celebrating the Harvest waits for the dawn. 1 It seemed like a dream 7 Israel, trust the LORD! when the LORD brought us back He is always merciful, to the city of Zion. and he has the power 2 We celebrated with laughter to save you. and joyful songs. 8 Israel, the LORD will save you In foreign nations it was said, from all of your sins. “The LORD has worked miracles for his people.” Psalm 22 - Suffering and Praise 3 And so we celebrated (This is what Christ began to pray on the cross.) because the LORD had indeed worked miracles for us. 1My God, my God, why have you deserted me? 4 Our LORD, we ask you to bless Why are you so far away? our people again, Won’t you listen to my groans and let us be like streams and come to my rescue? in the Southern Desert. 2 I cry out day and night, 5 We cried as we went out but you don’t answer, to plant our seeds. and I can never rest. Now let us celebrate as we bring in the crops. 3 Yet you are the holy God, 6 We cried on the way ruling from your throne to plant our seeds, and praised by Israel. but we will celebrate and shout 4 Our ancestors trusted you, as we bring in the crops. and you rescued them. 5 When they cried out for help, Psalm 130 - Trusting the LORD in Times you saved them, of Trouble and you did not let them down when they depended on you. 1 From a sea of troubles 6 I call out to you, LORD. But I am merely a worm, 2 Won’t you please listen far less than human, as I beg for mercy? and I am hated and rejected by people everywhere. 7 3 If you kept record of our sins, Everyone who sees me no one could last long. makes fun and sneers. 4 But you forgive us, They shake their heads, 8 and so we will worship you. and say, “Trust the LORD! If you are his favorite, 5 With all my heart, let him protect you I am waiting, LORD, for you! and keep you safe.” I trust your promises. page 2 Psalms for Adults - Week 6 9 You, LORD, brought me You rescued me from the horns safely through birth, of wild bulls, and you protected me 22 and when your people meet, when I was a baby I will praise you, LORD. at my mother’s breast. 10 From the day I was born, 23 All who worship the LORD, I have been in your care, now praise him! and from the time of my birth, You belong to Jacob’s family you have been my God. and to the people of Israel, so fear and honor the LORD! 11 Don’t stay far off 24 The LORD doesn’t hate when I am in trouble or despise the helpless with no one to help me. in all of their troubles. 12 Enemies are all around When I cried out, he listened like a herd of wild bulls. and did not turn away. Powerful bulls from Bashan are everywhere. 25 When your people meet, 13 My enemies are like lions you will fill my heart roaring and attacking with your praises, LORD, with jaws open wide. and everyone will see me keep my promises to you. 14 I have no more strength 26 The poor will eat and be full, than a few drops of water. and all who worship you All my bones are out of joint; will be thankful my heart is like melted wax. and live in hope. 15 My strength has dried up like a broken clay pot, 27 Everyone on this earth and my tongue sticks will remember you, LORD. to the roof of my mouth. People all over the world You, God, have left me will turn and worship you, to die in the dirt. 28 because you are in control, the ruler of all nations. 16 Brutal enemies attack me like a pack of dogs, 29 All who are rich tearing at my hands and have more than enough and my feet. will bow down to you, Lord. 17 I can count all my bones, Even those who are dying and my enemies just stare and almost in the grave and sneer at me. will come and bow down. 18 They took my clothes 30 In the future, everyone and gambled for them. will worship and learn about you, our Lord. 19 Don’t stay far away, LORD! 31 People not yet born My strength comes from you, will be told, so hurry and help. “The Lord has saved us!” 20 Rescue me from enemy swords and save me from those dogs. 21 Don’t let lions eat me. page 3 .

But it truly felt like the wrong time to leave. Instead, I have been blessed with permission to remain in ministry through it all. So, I have stayed in active fellowship with High Cross United Reformed Church in Tottenham; Rectory Road and Manor Road United Reformed Churches in Stoke Newington; Clapton Park United Reformed Church in Hackney and Islington; and the South Lea Valley Local Area of the URC. I was also surrounded by valued ecumenical colleagues in Tottenham through Christians Together in Tottenham, and in touch with a wide circle of treasured colleagues and friends across Thames North Synod and beyond, including Jamaica and Ghana. But there are times when they simply remind us that we don‘t have time to pray -- not the way we long to. We want to pray without ceasing, but we also want to repair that engine and train the puppy and plow the south 40 before sunset. Still, the call to prayer is strong. The call to pray throughout the day has sounded for centuries as a way to deepen our faith. Daily Prayer for All Seasons provides a holy – and wholly realistic -- way to order our days, no matter how full they seem. Daily Prayer for All Seasons was compiled and written by a diverse team of people from all over the United States.     Marking our Communities 3 When we meet again: remembering and memorials Issue Date Version Issued by 3rd June 2020 1 The Liturgical Commission 3.1 During the pandemic and lockdown, many people were unable to plan and attend funerals, as they would have wanted to. Although each death will have been marked with care and compassion, with thanksgiving and hope, many feel that the story of a person’s life has not been adequately told. Some may feel that they have been unable to say a proper goodbye, and need to draw strength and hope from being together with others impacted by a death. 3.2 When Government restrictions ease and we are able to meet together again for public worship, there will be a need to create opportunities for thanksgiving and remembering in different ways. The liturgical resources that follow have been assembled with the help of the Life Events Team to help ministers and others plan for these occasions. The resources should be used together with ‘Prayers of Lament, Thanksgiving and Restoration’, which are published separately. 3.3 A funeral is an occasion of huge significance. Life changes forever with the death of a loved one. As time goes on, the experience of grief continues. Those who plan additional bereavement liturgies will need to consider where each service fits in the journey of bereavement so that any later memorial service does not seek to repeat the funeral, but to help family and friends move on. 3.4 As the nation emerges from the lockdown, there will be many individuals and organisations who will wish to organise commemorative events.
