This is achieved by engaging students in various co-curricular activities throughout their stay at Edwardes. We make sure that our students participate at various fronts during their college life, make friends, learn the importance of working in groups and teams and thus understand the importance of harmonious co-existence. In order to achieve this aim, the college offers several sporting events, societies, clubs and other forums through which students can pursue their interests and strengths to the best of their abilities. In doing so, we ensure that Edwardes is doing all it can to build strong, positive and mature minds who are the future of this country. Edwardes Chronicles has, once again, done a sterling job at chronicling our legacy of this past session. As you journey through the pages of this issue, you cannot help but feel nostalgic about your own college life. Through these annals you will learn all about our Edwardes community, the accomplishments of our students, the various activities they were involved in and the different events that were organised in the college. My heartfelt congratulations to the team of Edwardes Chronicles on the publication of their fourth issue. Keep it up! Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam (To the Greater Glory of God)

2 Edwardes College, TÊTE-À-TÊTE WITH THE EDITOR poor man, whose bicycle got imbalanced and dropped vegetables all over the heavy-trafficked road, is trying to save the vegetables from being crushed under the fast moving vehicles. A couple of green coats, Aon their way to college, leave their books and bags on the sidewalk and quickly come to the aid of the poor man; they do not leave until every single vegetable is saved and loaded back onto the bicycle; the poor man's “dair manana” is more than enough for them. Another man in a Suzuki loaded with shoe boxes, strews the contents on the road in front of the press club; four Edwardians, in a posh car behind the Suzuki, rush out to help the man. A car accident on the Saddar road, a huge crowd, a single female - the owner of the damaged car; a former student of Edwardes happens to be in one of the shops, another one passing by, both recognize the female as their teacher and rush to help out.

Dear Readers, Compassion is what we need and compassion is what I have witnessed as a growing trait among our students. It makes us think that we, as an institution, must have done something right with these students that their actions reflect such genuine compassion and selflessness. Students! On behalf of my generation to yours, I appreciate and celebrate your compassion towards humanity and hope and pray that you will make us proud by your altruistic ways. This session at Edwardes blossomed with the hustle bustle of numerous activities and events organized by various societies and clubs. Students, bubbling with enthusiasm, participated in these activities and arranged some mega events throughout the academic year which contributed to the physical, psychological, social, civic, linguistic and intellectual development of the students. We bring to you a collage of all these activities in our latest issue of Edwardes Chronicles-with a renewed look. We have renamed some of our segments which look back to the session's major events. Besides, this issue brings, for the first time, an exclusive interview with a former Edwardian in the In Retro section to reconnect with the nostalgic past glory of Edwardes. Moreover, we have added another new segment by the name Tour de Force which celebrates and acknowledges the life struggle of a prominent Edwardian. For this exciting new issue, I would like to extend my genuine appreciation to the Chronicles team. We had a large and diverse team this year with students from intermediate, bachelors, HND and BCS who worked with such perseverance, planning and commitment that I am enthralled by their ingenuity, resourcefulness and conscientiousness. My sincere gratitude goes to the Principal Prof Dr Nayer Fardows, to Asst Prof Nasir Iqbal (HoD English) and to Lecturer Irfan Ullah Khan (Advisor Edwardes Chronicles), for showing unstinting support and profound interest in the publication of this issue. Laiba Sehrish Nawaz

Achievement is only a step away when talent meets hard work and determination. Once again, in the history of Edwardes College Peshawar, an Edwardian made her mark. Laiba Sehrish Nawaz, a student of literature from 3rd year, took an initiative to step out of the endless cycle of making plans and finally putting her thoughts into actions. Laiba, a public blogger, made a compilation of her prose and poetry and turned it into a book. The book which is entitled “Abduction from the Lethe” is aimed at letting the younger generation know that life will throw lemons at you until you learn to make lemonade. In simpler words, everything in life is supposed to make us grow, thus, nothing should be taken for granted. After teaming up with “Dastaan” - 's first self-publishing platform - Laiba started a series of pre-order campaign for her book which began in the college itself and received a warm and encouraging response from the students and teachers. A second campaign was arranged at Shelton's Layalina which was also covered by the “Mashriq News.” Where there is a will there is a way. After a successful response, the book has finally been printed and is out now and available in stores.

Mustafa Bilal For the first time, Edwardes College arranged an intra-college Spelling Bee Contest this session. Hundreds of students from all years participated enthusiastically in the mini-Spelling Bees out of which top twenty five students qualified for the final Spelling Bee Contest which took place in November 2016. Mustafa Bilal, an English literature student from 3rd year, stood first and made history. Mustafa, on winning Spelling Bee, says, “It was a wonderful experience to be part of the first Spelling Bee Competition ever held in Edwardes College. For a first timer, it exceeded my expectations. The excitement, the confusion, the mental activity and processing to imagine the spelling of the words was all pretty new. It was a good academic cum co- curricular exposure for me.”

Syed Talha Haider Syed Talha Haider, from 4th year, is a special student with visual impairment, but his dedication to learning and intellectual abilities are highly commendable. Talha joined Edwardes College in 2013, after doing his matriculation from Fazaia Inter College Kohat (2003-2013). After successfully completing Intermediate, he joined the Bachelors programme at Edwardes with International Relations and Political Science as his major subjects. Talha says, “The biggest challenge in my school was having no friends at all and it just didn't provide me with an environment that I could have benefitted from at the best of my ability; whereas my time in Edwardes was more than anything I could have asked or hoped for. Pointing one particular aspect of how it helped me is not fair; I have the institution, as a whole, to thank in providing me with such amazing and inspiring teachers and great friends. Edwardes has played a huge part in allowing my limited scope to widen and develop”. Talha's best friend at Edwardes is his class fellow Matiullah Hidayat.“Mati”, he says,“is just like a brother to me. He has every quality that a best friend should have:always there when I am in need, trustworthy, jolly and very caring”. Talha's hobbies include: sports, reading, writing, and listening to music. He aims to get into Civil Services. We wish him all the very best for his future endeavours.

4 Edwardes College, Peshawar TOUR DE FORCE

Noman's Success Story (Reported bySyed Momin, HND) n 15th April, 2017 I got a call from Noman; he told me that he had become Mr. Pakistan in the first ever Men's Physique category in Pakistan. This was Oa big achievement but Noman did not stop there, he then stepped on stage for the first ever Muscle Mania Competition in Pakistan. He was placed third in two categories: the first one was Fitness Model and the second was the Bodybuilding 70kg Class. This was a big achievement considering the fact that this was an international competition, and he was competing against professionals who had been bodybuilding for years. Besides, Noman has also been selected for the Asian Tournament which will be the biggest competition of his life. After winning all these competitions, he was featured on multiple T.V channels such as Ab Tak, 92 news, Dawn, Mashriq, Aaj, ARY and Samma. Noman sure has made us proud. He said “this isn't my victory, this is our victory. This is 's victory”. Noman did what he said he would. He became Mr. Pakistan and proved all the naysayers wrong. So what can we learn from all this? How did he become the most popular student of Edwardes? How did he become Mr. Pakistan? How did he become so successful? The answer is simple. Follow your passion; do what excites you, something you love so much you could do all day, something that excites you so much you get goose bumps when you think about it. If you have not found your passion, keep looking. Just do what makes you happy and it will be impossible not to be successful. “Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you.” Oprah Winfrey THE LIMELIGHT BS ENGLISH COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY MINORITY STUDENTS' SCHOLARSHIPS (Reported by Matiullah Hidayat, 4C1) AWARD CEREMONY 2016-17 BS English Commencement Ceremony was held on 27th (Reported by Zaib Munawar, 1M4) September, 2016 which was attended by the honourable Minister of Education Mushtaq Ahmad Ghani, Professors and Personal from the University of Peshawar, Principal of Edwardes College, Members of English Department of Edwardes College and BS English freshmen. Zakki, former Vice Principal of Edwardes College and Prof of Economics, in the evening of Friday, 31st March, 2017 to have a semi-formal conversation with him. rof Zakki joined Edwardes College as a 3rd year student in 1963 and enjoyed his student life in the college by participating in several societies and clubs. PAfter graduating in 1964, he joined Peshawar University to pursue his masters degree in Economics. He joined Edwardes as a Lecturer in 1966. He told us that even as a lecturer, he was an active member of various societies, but the experience of Dramatic Society was something he would never forget. He reminisced about how he played the role of Julia, alongside late Brig Aftab Khan (nicknamed Chacha) and Prof Zia ul Qamar who played the roles of Faulkland and Lydia respectively, in the well-known comedy by Sheridan - TheRivals which was staged in 1967. The role of the famous Mrs Malaprop was enacted by Dr Phil Edmond, the then Principal of Edwardes College. As the evening proceeded, Prof Zakki's son and nephew joined us for tea and the ambience in the sophisticated drawing room, with its many antique pieces of art which indeed reflected Prof Zakki's elegant taste, grew more intellectual and literary. We discussed politics, economy and Edwardes. Prof Zakki appreciated the efforts of the faculty members and wished to continue meeting them in various events organized by the college. After tea, Sir took us out to see his garden and we found out that he is very fond of gardening and loves lilies. After spending some time observing every nuance of the well-kept garden, we bid farewell. In the end, Sir gave his best wishes to Chronicles and said that he felt honoured to be interviewed by the students of the same college where he had studied and started his career. It was indeed a memorable evening spent with a dignified and knowledgeable person who will be in our wishes and prayers forever. We thank Prof Zakki for welcoming us into his house and for giving us, young Edwardians, an opportunity to reunite and rekindle a relationship which will always be cherished.

RHYME ZONE The Quest of Life (By Muhammad Dawood, 4C2) There was no peace, I was a slayer; When the sea of your wills will be deep but mute, I vociferate, for three long years. When the night will be brightdark but not dupe in reality, No answer, it couldn't dare, When you will sleep but resurrect in actuality”. Not even a dull response I got, I stood there startled, asked for the arrangements, Perhaps, it was sleeping in some dovish slot. But all I left was materiality. I roared & thundered, rumbled & grumbled, I served the rest of my life in quest of wisdom, But this, I knew not: Peace comes with peace; I searched it in history, in movements of freedom, I, then, hissed in my prayers, to take it on lease; In the fictional characters, I whispered in my sighs, worshipped all the seas; In the philosophyof the philosophers, Finally, it arose, from shadow of numberless trees, In the ruin of the ruiners; The eyes deploring, the ground kissing my knees; I searched the mosques, temples and the plumes, I asked in a smoky tone: where were you all those years, Until I, myself, was ruined. When I was battling with life, to kill the curse? Finally, in last grey hairs, I found it all with my last breath, But to spare me, pure me, it was a reasonable strife. And the answer was death. But the peace replied, in a gush of wind, I slept peacefully with the soil, Sounding like it dejects the truths of the universe, That made me and had made me toil, The segmentation, breeds and sects, No more cries, no more sighs, The exploitation, wars and curses, Here, no one kills, no one dies, In mournful music, it amazed me with a maze. No one mourns, no one lies, The peace sizzled; “I will come to you In peaceful eternity, everyone lies. Edwardes College, Peshawar 17 FROM THE DIARY OF AN EDWARDIAN (By Muhammad Dawood, 4C2) “All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages.” ~ Shakespeare It is said that everyone has an actor within him/herself that needs to be polished; Edwardes College provides a platform to polish such creative students. After two exhausting months of rehearsals, Edwardes College Dramatic Society - keeping the grandeur of the historic Edwardes Stage - enacted the Greek play “Antigone” written by the great playwright Sophocles in 441 BC, on 28th February, 1st& 2nd March, 2017. The play was directed by Asst Prof Nasir Iqbal, Head of English Department, along with Asst Director Lec Shamoon Akbar Gandapur. The play depicts human sufferings owing to dictatorial law and the resistance of a young woman against the system. The show won great acclaim from the audience coming from all great acclaim from the audience coming from all walks of life from all over the province. The stage is a tool for making societies more empathetic and humane; besides, theatre increases emotional and cultural intelligence. I, Muhammad Dawood, have a two year experience at Edwardes Stage. Being a student, it was a euphoric experience just like a drug for me. I used this word “drug” here intentionally, for the applause I received, and acting itself has a very addictive nature. These two years of experience have given me innumerable memories, great teachers, close friends (I would like to mention some names: Saad Ali, Sikandar Sultan, Sohail Mukhtar, Wafa Farooq, Amna Hayat, and Rameen Awan), persistent influence and ceaseless confidence. Imagine a person who was scared to interact with anyone, was dealing with a huge crowd in a decent way; this is what Edwardes College has given me. When on the stage, I was asked to improvise on a number of occasions that developed my initiatives and encouraged me to be more proactive; it stimulated me to be constantly creative. It made me discover and rediscover myself over and over again and that is what I will always appreciate.
