Rescue Committee Report Reported by Rose Bednarski Hi everyone! Just a reminder that IHCUS rescue is to help ANY Ibizan that needs a home. It does not have to be just for those Ibizans that are in a shelter or a bad situation that need help. I have a list of people looking to adopt an Ibizan Hound that has been rescued or just needs a new home. Some are looking for an adult Ibizan, not just a puppy. If you have a Ibizan Hound that you would like to find a home for, contact me. Since these are NOT an rescue situa- tion, I just refer the names I have of people looking for a Ibizan Hound, with the person wanting to place their adult dog. This way, it’s a happy ending for everyone, people and dog. Rescue has been notified numerous times about dogs that are Ibizan Hound on PetFinders.com. Most are not Ibizan mixed. If you find one that you think is a purebred, please let me know. I’ve been contacted by a few people about sightings on Petfinders and at their local shelter about Ibizan Hounds. Once again, none were purebred Ibizans. They looked to be a Ridgeback mixed, or a pitbull mixes. I appreciate everyone contacting me when they hear about a Ibizan in need and all reports are checked out. Gazette Column: Potpourri (Submitted by Bonnie Fleming) Usually, I haven’t much problem coming up with a column, but this time? Zilch, kaput, writer’s block, comlete lack of literary talent(?). Whatever. So, I went digging in my idea file. I have asked for ideas from IHCUS members in the past, and received several good suggestions. I have used many of them, but some ideas were just too limited in scope to make a whole column. So - Voila - pot pourri! What is it? We all get this question every time we go somewhere with our big eared friends. We have, most of us anyway, developed a two minute spiel that we can rattle off in our sleep. My first comment is that they are descendents of the dogs pictured in the ancient Egyptian pictures/friezes. How much are they, and what are they good for? tie for second most asked questions right after you get past the pronunciation problems. I have begun to always say I bee zan, which saves the spanish diction lesson, I give the usual bit about them being a Spanish breed now, and that they are a hunting breed. I also try to give brief comments about their temperament (yes, they are good with kids - no they cannot be trained out of counter surfing). As there is a lot of hunting with dogs in my area, I get lots of those questions as well (yes, they are great on mice and grasshoppers and no, I don’t hunt coyotes with them. City folk get a different set of questions, and I am sure, have developed equivalent answers. I tell those who ask how much I get for my (and if they are really interested) that I have an application and a waiting list. I follow the lead of the person asking, trying to be patient, and briefly, but completely answer these seemingly idle questions. I have sold puppies this way. At least no one has asked me if they were goats (one city slicker cop stopped one of our owners, because she had a goat in the car)but I have had enough of the “gee, they look like deer) that I get very nervous during hunting season! Where does the wire come from? Someplace in ancient history and from crosses with Spanish wire-coated hunting dogs. It is probable that the Podenco ancestors spread throught Europe. the Middle East and because of their outstanding hunting ability. However the wire factor only seems to appear in the Spanish derived dogs. The Pharoah and African based breeds do not have wire coats. Except for the U.S. and Canada, the two breeds are kept separate. There is no discussion of that separation being done in this country. We are still plagued with a very small gene pool, and it’s resulting problems. Wires have been improved by the crosses with smooths in many people’s opinions, though we do see more broken coats here than we used to. It is great to see more dogs being imported to expand our gene pool. The variety of sizes and tails can also be traced back to ancient times and not so ancient history. Originally, all dogs were bred for purpose — not the AKC standard so there were size variations from very small to to very large breeds, depending on what game they hunted. We still get very wide variations in our modern day breedings. It is not unusual, even in tightly line bred or in bred litters, to get adults from 23 inches to 31inches from the same litter. We also still get that curly tail seen in the friezes on occasion. Why are they sight hounds? Well, the Spanish get quite upset when we classify Beezers as “merely” sight hounds. It is not a good nomenclature when our guys hunt by sight AND sound AND scent. Only the Bazenji, Pharoah and other Podenco breeds (to my knowledge) do so. The International kennel clubs classify our breed as a primitive and anyone who has lived with even just one, let alone the a pack of them, will agree wholeheartedly! Unfortunately AKC does not recognize primitives and so we are in the hound group. I would like to thank the chat list discussions, Lisa Puskas, Rafael Serra and many others for all the information touched upon so very lightly here. I continue to learn from all of them. These hounds are a never ending source of delight, laughter, love and wonder that I shall never tire of.

IHCUS Rotating Specialty Site Submissions

Proposed Date Each Year: The show weekend would be the third weekend in October. We propose back-to-back IHCUS specialties on Thurs- day and Friday, and there are all-breed shows on Saturday and Sunday. Site (Please indicate indoor or outdoor and details about the conformation, lure coursing, and obedience sites and other amenities that make this site a good choice.) Goodyear, Arizona (just outside of Phoenix). The site is called “Empty Acres” and the site owner has dedicated the site to holding dog and horse shows. The show will be held outdoors. Lure coursing is available right at the same site--no driving. There is full electricity, indoor bathrooms, and next year there will be washers/dryers and Internet access. It’s a great site, and the weather is typically in the 80’s during the day and 60’s at night that time of year. The all-breed club that hosts the shows following the specialty would do everything they can to help us, will try to hire our judge to lessen our expenses, etc. Show Superintendent/secretary (List available ones in the area who we might be able to contract with.) There are many show secretaries in the area that we could use. Lisa Puskas is local and has about 17 years experience as a show sec, so could make sure everything runs smoothly. Committee Members who would be willing to help organize the first show in this location. At least one person is necessary at this time; a committee will be formed at a later date. There are several local AZ members that would be willing to serve on the show committee. CA members are also welcome to help. With which all breed or hound specialty shows will this IHCUS specialty be held? (At least two should be required.) Kachina Kennel Club - two days following the specialties. Budget (What will this show site cost the club? Include all estimated expenses for conformation, lure coursing, and obedience from the rental of this site.) Show site is free, and we could borrow rings/tables/shade canopies/etc from the all-breed club. Camping would be at the cost that the all-breed club would charge, and it is not expensive. AKC Lure coursing would make money because we could open it to all breeds. There are several local obedience judges and the fees would be minimal. Hotels/motels accepting dogs There are several hotels that are within 5-10 minutes from the show site. Room rates are reasonable. Major airports Phoenix, Sky Harbor is the main airport, which is about 30 minutes from the show site. It is an easy airport to fly into from most locations.

Third Eye Winter 2007 •12• www.ihcus.org IHCUS Rotating Specialty Site Submissions

Proposed Date The first week in May. With the first day for sweeps, obed, and agility. The 2 for our specialty and on the 3 or maybe even the 4th for all breed lure coursing. The 3, and 4 will be in conjunction with all breed shows being held that weekend at Purina Farms so if there is enough interest we could do a supported entry. Site (please indicate indoor or outdoor and details about the conformation, lure coursing, and obedience sites and other amenities that make this site a good choice.) Purina Farms, Gray Summit , Mo. Outdoor show under tents. Lure coursing, and obedience, and agility. With dog friendly motels close. And 6 flags within 10 miles of show site. Also PF will donate prizes for our show. And you have SLASH for lure coursing event. The club also will be able to collect RV parking fees for the Ibizan Hound people. Show Superintendent/secretary (list available ones in the area who we might be able to contract with.) Onofrio would be used with the other clubs. Committee members who would be willing to help organize the first show in this location. At least one person is necessary at this time; a committee will be formed at a later date. I am willing to do the show chairman . Lisa McKay, Karen Radke, Carol Petty, And others that I have yet to ask for help. With which all breed or hound specialty shows will this IHCUS specialty be held? (At least two should be required.) May shows are St. Louis Dog Breeders Assoc. and Spirit or the Heartland KC and Jefferson County KC. Budget (what will this show site cost the club? Include all estimated expenses for conformation, lure coursing, and obedience from the rental of this site.) Show site is free. And camping would be at the cost that the other club would charge with the fees for the weekend to go to IHCUS. And maybe our conformation judge will be hired by the other clubs and cut our expenses. Also if we are able to hold a all breed lure coursing AKC then the profit would go to the IHCUS. Hotels/motels accepting dogs (list names and how far they are from the show site. Mapquest may be helpful.) Diamond Inn. Super 8, and several others available to dog show people. Major airports (list names and how far they are from the show site. Mapquest may be helpful.) Lambert Airport, St. Louis , Mo. 25 miles to show site. With rental cars at the airport. And at this time of year you should still be able to fly into St. Louis with moderate temps.
