2 www.illinoisracquetball.com ISRA FAMILY NEWS What a Season! by Hung Che

Editor’s Note: This may be one of the best proposal stories ever!

So, this is my season, I guess...winning a State title, and double gold at that, and winning Dana’s hand in marriage. It is more than I could have hoped for!

I wanted to propose to Dana (Mui) at our favorite restaurant with her family and friends on hand upstairs to surprise her. But last-minute changes got in the way…my sister was coming into town that day (Saturday, August 25) to throw a party for my 1-year old niece’s birthday. I was unable to change the date due to other family members coming into town, so on to Plan B.

I found a local race, the Skokie 5K Backlot Dash, that was taking place that morning. I decided to surprise her with a proposal at the end of that race. I knew she was not going to be able to run it due to her upcoming marathon plans and corresponding training schedule. My initial ideas on a proposal did not include any type of physical activity and running a race at that…but it was in the name of love!

Soon it was race day, early morning, and I had arranged that both of our families would be there “to watch me run.” Dana didn’t seem to think anything was strange about this...excellent. I do think she was a bit miffed that everyone came to watch me run this measly 5K when she runs much bigger races all the time and doesn’t get this type of turn- out!

So, I started the race and ran the first 2.5 miles in my running gear. Things were going relatively well, except that it was hot, and I hate to run. I had recruited some friends to bring the ring, flowers, and a tux I had rented earlier that week to the 2.5-mile marker, just before the final turn. I changed into my tux to run the last half-mile and was even able to convince some police officers to follow behind me for the last three blocks to give me a po- lice escort!

Well, once Dana saw me running down the street in my tux, with police lights in the background, she put two and two together. She even said out loud, “Is that why everyone is here?”

It didn’t take long for her to start crying in anticipation of me reach- ing the finish line to pop the question. When I neared the finish line, I stopped and waved her out from the sidelines to meet me in the street, in front of every- one!

As Dana came out, the Photo courtesy of Hung Che race director came up Dana, will you marry me? to me and asked if I wanted to use the megaphone. I was really only planning to ask her one question, not to give a big speech!

I’m not sure what I said, things were blurry, but I said some nice things and some funny things, and pretty much proclaimed my love for her. The crowd loved it, they laughed and cheered, and I ended it on bended knee proposing to the love of my life in front of our family and friends…on a megaphone.

I received the answer I was hoping for! As I was putting the ring on her finger, I asked if she would finish the race with me. Since you can’t run a race without race bibs, I unbuttoned my jacket and revealed custom- made race bibs, with our names on them, wedding rings, and the date, Photo courtesy of Hung Che 0825, our four-year anniversary as well. She said “Yes!”

Mission accomplished, wedding on September 7th! continued on next page

4 www.illinoisracquetball.com What Racquetball MEANS TO ME Nancy Kronenfeld

Age, occupation, family, years in racquetball and home club? I turned 62 in January. I have owned my own business for the past 26 years selling mostly health insurance, so this is a very interesting time for me with Health Care Reform. There could be the possibility that it is so overwhelm- ing I may retire and have more time for racquet- ball.

I have been married to my husband (and fan) Dave for 40 years. We have three sons and al- most six grandchildren as one is due April 18, so he/she may be born when this is printed!

I actually started playing tournaments right before I was pregnant with my first son. After he was born, I found it whipped me back into shape since I had gained 60 pounds during that pregnancy. So I have played for 38 or 39 years now, and for the last 20 of those, I’ve been at Lattof YMCA.

What influenced you to start playing racquet- ball? I really started racquetball twice – my husband Dave took a class during our senior year at the U of I. They had just opened the IMPE Build- ing with 20 courts, and he said I would love the game. Just after I started learning, we entered a Photo courtesy of Nancy Kronenfeld tourney and did horrible together. He was very upset with me, so I didn’t pick up a racquet again for a couple of years!

What are your goals in racquetball for this year? Being 62, is it okay if I say that I think I’ve hit my goals in racquetball? I have been so lucky to have continued play- ing all these years as I think I became a better competitor. I was very temperamental when I was younger and prob- ably got in my own way. This year I won Women’s Open at the ISRA State Singles Championships. I was hoping to win at least one round since I had been selected as the Female Athlete of the Year and didn’t want to go down in Round One! Since I play Open infrequently, I forgot about ‘one serve’ until the night before the tourney and was thinking I made a mistake not practicing that! Luckily I think it was just as tough for the other women as it was for me. If I had to choose a goal, it would be to try to continue to play racquetball into my 80’s like Lola! It’s all bonus at this point – icing on the cake.

What makes you love this sport? It is THE best workout – I’m a workout junkie, and I love to eat! This seems to be the best activity for burning those extra calories I can’t resist. Plus, racquetball is fun, not boring like running on a treadmill. I also love the relation- ships I have formed through the years (my racquetball family), and I believe that Dave and I hold the record for at- tending Geoff and Deb Peters’ holiday party (one year we went twice). And, of course, I love the competition!

What is your philosophy on life? I’m still working on that (lol)! One thing I believe is I can always accomplish what I set out to do – I always think I’m going to win (doesn’t mean I do, but I always go out thinking I will), and it translates into my business, too, and I think it’s helped me a lot over the years.

www.illinoisracquetball.com 5 ISRA RULES AND REFEREE Program Beginning this year, the ISRA is spon- soring a Rules and Referee Program to provide rules clinics, case study clinics and testing for individuals interested in improving their knowledge of the rules of racquetball and becoming USAR Certified Referees. As of the last sanctioned tour- nament, 28 players have attended a rules clinic, nine individuals have completed the case study clinic, and three partici- pants have completed testing.

The process, with dedicated participa- tion from an individual, requires approxi- mately three to four months to reach the desired goal of becoming a USAR Certi- fied Referee. Requisite activities must be completed within one calendar year.

To begin, you must attend a rules clinic and then a case study clinic. Upon completion of the two clinics, you are qualified to take a monitored test - this is NOT an open book exam, and a mini- John O’Donnell, Jr. conducts the inaugural clinic in Peoria mum score of 86% must be achieved. Once those items are accomplished, the next steps is to officiate a minimum of ten (10) scheduled matches with two of those observed and evaluated by a qualified official. A written record of the matches refereed must be kept by date, and each match must be certified by tournament control of the event used for your certification process. Your ISRA Board has provided this service to you with no monetary charges involved.

Rules, case study clinics and testing are conducted at sanctioned events throughout the year. We’re looking forward to your participation!

John O›Donnell, Jr. Clinic Moderator

Editor’s Note: John O’Donnell, Jr., is ISRA South Zone VP and holder of numerous State and National titles. He resides in Champaign and has conducted clinics this year at ISRA State Singles, ISRA State Doubles, and the Sham- rock Shootout. John plans to be at USAR Regionals as well.

What Racquetball MEANS TO ME cont. from previous page What was your most memorable moment(s) in racquetball? There are two, and I say that because I was a part of the biggest state tournament in Illinois back in 1978. There were over 32 women in the Open, and I played the #1 seed on the Glass Court in the quarterfinals. I was so nervous, and there was seating all around the Glass Court back then, and the place was packed. I won that match and thought the toughest competition was out of the way, but I ended up losing in the semis and placing 3rd (since we played for 3rd back then). Now, actually winning State Singles may have surpassed that great memory!

What is one thing you would like to do that you have not done yet? Definitely visit New Zealand. It’s been on my wish list for 20 years…what am I waiting for??

What else would you like your racquetball colleagues to know about you? I’m sure they know I am loud, and I think people think I’m tough, but I am really a softy inside.

www.illinoisracquetball.com 9 Glass Court ONE-DAY DOUBLES Shootouts January 5 & 6, 2013 The Glass Court Swim & Fitness, Lombard Tournament Directors: Dan Jaskier and Cheryl Kirk

So it’s the weekend after New Year’s…time to get back on the courts, burn off some holiday calories, and get ready for State Doubles. But…was there un- decorating to do at home and other responsibilities weighing heavy? No problem! The Men’s Doubles divisions played on Saturday and the Women’s and Mixed on Sunday. Judging by the turnout, players appreciated that weekend flexibility.

Saturday’s 66 participants split into three pool play divisions – Men’s Open/A, Men’s B/C, and Men’s Age. Jim Schlicher was the standout, winning with Clint Hickman and also with Raj Sondhi. Men’s Open/A Finalists John Thorson, Tom Lamberson, Jim Schlicher, and Clint Hickman

Sunday’s 24 players were divided into Women’s Open/A (RR), Mixed Open/A (pool play) and Mixed B/C (double RR).

There’s a story here, with the author’s head hanging a bit low. In the Women’s Open/A, Judy Sands connected with Cheryl Kirk’s feet going up to the front wall for a get on Court 4. Paramedics arrived and escorted Judy to the hospital for a diagnosis of a very bad sprain. Judy hobbled back on crutches to watch the afternoon’s activity (a trouper, for sure). In the meantime, what would become of Judy’s mixed partner, Scott Fauque? Hmm…that’s when it became suspect. Cheryl stepped in to play with Scott, and Tom and Dolores Lamberson rose to the occasion and ran the desk for the rest of the day.

So – she takes out the gal and steals the guy…not Cheryl’s finest hour. I think Cheryl owes Judy… something. They’ll work it out. -- ck

41st ISRA State Singles Championships The Glass Court Swim & Fitness, Lombard February 21-24, 2013 Tournament Director: Cheryl Kirk

With 156 players turning out for State Singles, we took a little of the pressure off the weekend by beginning on Thursday night. Play was brisk throughout the weekend (98 of the 156 entered two divisions), and forty-seven State Champions emerged as the last balls hit the front wall.

The Glass Court staff and volunteers, as usual, populated the village that made this event a success. Thanks to ev- eryone, so many of whom appear on these lists from event to event. You’re the Dream Team that makes it all happen: Marian Bala, Kenny Brown, Marla Cusano, Mike Davern, Laurel Davis, Janet Eminger, Joe Eminger, Michael Fornero, Peggy Fornero, Lori Good, Jason Goodman, Steve Good- man, Jeff Grace, Pam Grace, Doug Halverson, Michelle Hal- verson, Amanda Hayes, Dolores Lamberson, Eric Mathews, Dave Milazzo, Liz Molitor, Dana Mui, John O’Donnell, Jr., Geoff Peters, John Puccio, Madison Reeser, Bill Roberts, Sara Roberts, Howie Robins, Abby Singer, Dave Singer, John Thorson, Joan Vande Kieft, Jim Wehrli, Lynne Weis- bart, Lynn Yeazell, and Mike Zimmerman.

The ISRA gratefully acknowledges the contributions of these sponsors who made State Singles a success: Anthony’s Pizzeria (Tony Cosmano), Kirsten’s Danish Bakery (Paul and Kirsten Jepsen), Little Debbie (Joe and Janet Eminger), Juice Plus+ (Liz Hickman), The Coffee Alley (Bill and Sara Roberts), John O’Donnell, Jr. , Max Call, Dr. Ernesto Tan, Rick and Kim Seaberg, Alberto Palacios, Indian Groceries & Spices (Shirish “Sam” Sang- havi), Pro Penn, Response Graphics & Embroidery (Lynn and Kevin Yeazell), Professional Insurance Producers (Nancy and Dave Kronenfeld), and Molitor Athletic Fields (Liz and Dave Molitor),
