Also, Elena Andreeva and Afshin Marashi joined the Council. I am very grateful to the collective team of colleagues on the board for their commitment to our society. Preparation for the forthcoming Eleventh Biennial Conference of The International Society for Iranian Studies is underway and the head of the Conference Committee, Florian Schwarz, and Programme Committee Chair Camron Amin together with their colleagues on both committees are doing their best to make the Eleventh Biennial another successful conference, this time in Vienna. STATE, DISSIDENTS, AND CONTENTION: IRAN, 1979-2010 HAMID REZAI SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCE COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 ©2012 Hamid Rezai All rights reserved ABSTRACT State, Dissidents, and Contention: Iran, 1979-2010 Hamid Rezai Why after almost a decade of silence and “successful” crackdowns of contention during the 1980s has Iran witnessed once again waves of increasing popular protest? What are the processes and mechanisms behind the routinization of collective actions in Iran since the early 1990s, which continue despite state repression? Why and under what circumstances does a strong authoritarian state that has previously marginalized its contenders tolerate some forms of contention despite the state’s continued repressive capacity? And finally, to what extent are available social movement theories capable of explaining the Iranian case? In “State, Dissidents, and Contention: Iran, 1979-2010” I engage theories of social movements and contentious politics in order to examine the emergence, development, and likely outcomes of popular contention in contemporary Iran. My study is the first project of its kind to focus on elite factionalism and its impact on popular mobilization in contemporary Iran. Although other scholars have extensively written on elite factionalism in postrevolutionary Iran, they have not analyzed the implications of the inter-elite conflict for the emergence and development of social protests against the Islamic Republic. While this study primarily utilizes political process and resource mobilization models, it acknowledges the importance of economic, ideological, and breakdown approaches for the interpretation of the emergence and development of popular mobilization in contemporary Iran. -

New Encounters with Shestov
The Journal of Jewish Thought and Philosophy, 2002, Vol. 11, No. 1, pp. 49–62 New Encounters with Shestov Michael Weingrad University of Leeds Lev Shestov (1866–1938) has not attained a secure place on the contemporary philo- sophical map. Feted in his lifetime, his name is now more commonly spotted in the works of better-known writers who came into the orbit of the man or his works. In part, this lack of renown is due to the difficulty of fitting him to a specific audience among the factions of postwar philosophy. Shestov is often identified as a ‘‘religious existentialist,’’ but what this designation means in his case is the fusion of a radical skepticism with a profound religious sense and, clearly, one trait will often make Shestov less appealing to those who share the other. With the waning of existentia- lism’s cache, moreover, Shestov lost a certain currency, though he had little in common with a Jean-Paul Sartre in any case. Intriguing attempts have been made to link him with other ‘‘Jewish existentialists,’’ particularly Martin Buber and Franz Rosenzweig, yet Shestov’s understanding of Judaism is too distant from that of the German Jews for this to be a solid affinity, and ‘‘Jewish existentialism’’ is not an entirely satisfactory rubric for any of these three thinkers. Yet it is worthwhile to take another look at Shestov, and for precisely the reason which has set his so-called existentialism on the back-burner: the shifts in continental philosophy which began in the 1960s, and which replaced existentialism with post- structuralism as the philosophy du jour, and which made Jacques Derrida and Michel Foucault, rather than Sartre, the thinkers of the day. -

Sovereignty without Nationalism, Islam without God A Critical Study of the Works of Jalal Al-e Ahmad by Sohrab Shiravand A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of sociology University of Alberta © Sohrab Shiravand, 2015 Abstract Jalal Al-e Ahmad (1923-1969) is widely perceived, particularly in Iran, as the leading social critic in Iran’s post- Mosaddeq, pre Khomayni era (1953-1978) and also as an inspirational figure for Iran’s 1978-1979 revolution. His concept of “occidentosis” (Gharbzadeghi in Persian), or “Westernization,” as the main or even the only cause of Iran’s political, economic, and social problems, seemed to many Iranians to accurately diagnose their country’s ills. More importantly, his “cure” for the “disease” of occidentosis was his ringing call for Iranians to return to their authentic (Perso-Islamic) “self” and to use a rejuvenated Islam as a defense against Western imperialism. This call galvanized many Iranians, particularly among the Leftist intellectuals and Muslim clerics, and made Al-e Ahmad a revered figure following Iran’s successful revolution. This thesis argues that a close reading of a selection of Al-e Ahmad’s fiction, Occidentosis (1961), and autobiographical writing does not support the popular perception of him. The thesis’s title -- “Sovereignty without Nationalism, Islam without God” -- refers to the double paradox at the heart of his writing and thought: he called for Iran’s sovereignty in the face of Western imperialism, but felt no sense of community with his fellow Iranians, and he called for a “return to Islam,” but had no personal faith in either this or any other religion.
