View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by NECTAR 1 The Girls Who Waited? Female Companions and Gender in Doctor Who Lorna Jowett Abstract: Science fiction has the potential to offer something new in terms of gender representation. This doesn’t mean it always delivers on this potential. Amid the hype surrounding the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, the longest running science fiction series on television, a slightly critical edge is discernable in the media coverage concerning the casting of the twelfth Doctor and issues of representation in the series. This paper examines Doctor Who in the broader context of TV drama and changes to the TV industry, analysing the series’ gender representation, especially in the 2005 reboot, and focusing largely on the female ‘companions’. Keywords: gender representation, television, feminism, BBC. When I put together an earlier version of this paper two years ago, I discovered a surprising gap in the academic study of Doctor Who around gender. Gender in science fiction has often been studied, after all, and Star Trek, another science fiction television series starting in the 1960s (original run 1966-69) and continued via spin-offs and reboots, has long been analysed in terms of gender. So why not Doctor Who? Admittedly, Doctor Who’s creators have no clear philosophy about trying to represent a more equal society, as with the utopian Trek. The lack of scholarship on gender in Doctor Who may also be part of a lack of scholarship generally on the series—academic study of it is just gaining momentum, and only started to accumulate seriously in the last five years.

Elisabeth Sladen pages 19/10/2011 12:41 Page 77 Chapter Four What Would You Like To Drink, Katy? OCTOR WHO, EH? I was aware of it, of course, although this was not Dsomething I would choose to watch. Science fiction, as I’ve said, just isn’t my thing. Sorry! If I’m honest, getting the call for Doomwatch, Corrie and Z-Cars meant just as much to me because all three were such popular programmes. So when I saw the note from Brian I reacted the same way I always did. Oh, excellent – work! That should keep me busy for a few days. And not a Cointreau bottle in sight ... Little did I know how much that ‘work’ would change my life. I may not have known much about Time Lords and blue police boxes, but I did know something about the man who’d asked to see me. I remember, at seven years old, being taken on a school trip to the Abbey Cinema in Liverpool to celebrate the Queen’s Coronation. For some reason we were shown a film called Scott of the Antarctic and Barry Letts had been one of the actors in that. Ever the performer and looking for inspiration even at that age, there had been something about him that had captured my interest: the way he moved, the way he delivered his lines, the way he interacted with props and his co-stars ...everything was so considered. Twenty years on, as I wandered over to Threshold House and through the familiar front door, I was really rather excited.

  • 'School Reunion'
“I’m Not Past My Sell By Date Yet!”: Sarah Jane’s Adventures in Postfeminist Rejuvenation and the Later Life Celebrity of Elisabeth Sladen Hannah Hamad Introduction At apparent odds both with what has been highlighted as ‘the cultural invisibility of the aged,’ (Wearing, 2007:279) and with Matt Hills’ observation that ‘age and aging don’t seem to play well’ in the BBC’s rebooted iteration of iconic science-fiction series Doctor Who,(Hills in Jenkins, 2009), British television actor Elisabeth Sladen became one of the biggest stars of UK children’s television in her 60s. Reprising the iconic role of the Doctor’s investigative journalist companion Sarah Jane Smith that she first played in 1973, and in which she was once regularly seen by audiences numbering in excess of 11 million (Chapman, 2006: 99), Sladen experienced a quite remarkable career renaissance and resurgence of her celebrity during her seventh decade. This was such that at the time of her death in 2011, she had the distinction to be playing the longest running (albeit not continuously) character played by the same actor on British television outside of soap opera (Mulkern, 2011: 143). Frequently during its initial broadcast run from 2007 until 2011, when the fifth and final series was unavoidably curtailed due to Sladen’s untimely and unexpected death from cancer, the Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures (hereafter, SJA), in which she starred in the title role as an alien-fighting journalist assisted by a small group of local teens, was the highest rated show on its host channel, CBBC.1 This was routinely the case for the episodes that comprised the first two series in 2007 and 2008, when each one topped the Broadcasters’ Audience Research Board’s lists of the highest rated shows for that channel in its respective week of broadcast (BARB, 2015).

  • How Has the Portrayal of Women on the Television Series Doctor Who Evolved from 1963 to 2019?
Scientia et Humanitas: A Journal of Student Research How Has the Portrayal of Women on the Television Series Doctor Who Evolved from 1963 to 2019? Sophia Watts Abstract This essay examines the question, “How has the portrayal of women on the television series Doctor Who evolved from 1963 to 2019?” First, the universe of Doctor Who and all its complexities are established, explaining how the show has lasted as long as it has with a revolving cast of characters. In addition, this essay defines the portrayal of a character and what that entails. This essay then delves into the lives and personalities of six major female characters on the show. They include Susan Foreman, Sarah Jane Smith, Ace, Rose Tyler, Amy Pond, and the Thirteenth Doctor. Their actions, words, and character developments are all scrutinized and examined in this essay. Eventually, it becomes apparent that the role of women in the series has evolved and expanded. Over time, they are given more chances to be independent and have storylines outside of their relationships with male characters, especially the Doctor. They make decisions for themselves and challenge the Doctor on his actions and views on the universe. Eventually, women on the show take the lead, which is made apparent by the recent casting of the show’s first female Doctor. By the end of this essay, the conclusion is reached that the role of women on Doctor Who has evolved by allowing these characters to have bigger parts and more complex backgrounds. Furthermore, women on the show can carry their own storylines and are not controlled by other characters’ decisions or relationships with them.
