After four years of government control and intervention in their lives, citizens demanded increased state involvement in their welfare, an expectation that became more pronounced during and following the Great Depression. Coupled with these increased demands on the state, there was a changed notion of citizenship that looked to increased protection by government of the basic social, political and legal rights of all citizens. Those new notions of citizenship and the role of the state helped to shape the Maritime co-operative movement that emerged most forcefully in the Antigonish Movement. The Antigonish Movement’s founders, Reverends James Tompkins and Moses Coady, were Catholic priests, educated at St. Francis Xavier University (STFX) but prior to becoming professors at STFX they each studied abroad. This thesis explores how state involvement in the lives of Canadian citizens after World War I, together with other developments in the early twentieth century, prompted people to rethink notions of citizenship and how the changing expectations of the state influenced the origins of the Antigonish Movement. Incensed by economic disparity, especially within the fishery sector, Tompkins and Coady were determined to empower people towards self- determinism. They chose STFX as the vehicle to channel their cause and adult education as their avenue. They brought education to the people via rural study groups instead of expecting people to come to the University. i Even with its more robust role within citizens’ lives, the federal government realized it could not address all its citizens’ needs and it saw Coady as a bridge between government and the citizens of eastern Nova Scotia. As an agent of reform but not a unionist or a communist, he appealed to government within a capitalist system at a time when communism was beginning to gain strength. By examining this subject from a variety of sources, this thesis argues the origins of the Antigonish Movement were part of new emerging attitudes of Canadians towards citizenship and expectation of citizens towards the state of state-related institutions. In so doing, it moves the understanding of the Antigonish Movement away from a reliance on Catholic theology to new dimensions and considerations. He described the Antigonish Movement as: “An important and little known part of Canadian history.” Propelled by inspiration from Michael, and advice from a few others, I began this Masters journey. Its conclusion is the result of a team, and not a singular effort, and with deep gratitude I acknowledge a number of people. My sister, Martha, maintained a special interest in my thesis research and my sister, Kathy, encouraged me unrelentingly. The state intruded into people’s lives at a level not previously seen. The censorship of the press, government regulation of the economy and society, and, of course, conscription are among the most obvious examples of a new iteration of state involvement in Canadian society. It was in this period of dramatic change following World War I that Catholic priests Reverends James Tompkins and Moses Coady took the first steps that would lead to the famed Antigonish Movement which added a new dimension to the bourgeoning co- operative movement in Maritime Canada. The Antigonish Movement attempted to redress the conditions of workers, particularly fishers in Nova Scotia and

    Reviews/Revues Towards the Elusive Synthesis: The Atlantic Provinces in Recent General Treatments of Canadian History "WE KNOW MUCH MORE ABOUT THE AMERICAN PAST as we enter the 1980s", wrote Herbert Gutman in 1981, "than we did when we entered the 1960s. And yet the past is more inaccessible to nonhistorians than it was thirty or fifty years ago".1 Gutman's comment was a contribution to a debate that has subsequently gathered force in Canadian as well as in United States historiography. The historiography of the 1960s and 1970s was characterized by the opening of new fields of enquiry, focusing on questions such as gender, class, ethnicity, and region. During the 1980s, concern has increasingly been expressed that fragmentation has been the result. Without proper attention to the more general patterns and contexts of national history, the argument has been made in Canada by J.M.S. Careless, the study of "limited identities" may raise the danger of intellectual particularism as "national concerns are by and large passed over or discounted".2 Such contentions are not necessarily aimed at discrediting the study of the specialized areas of social and regional history which — with the participation of both Gutman and Careless — have been opened up in the past twenty or so years. At their most constructive, they can be read rather as calls for more integration of specific insights into general history through a process of synthesis. "A new synthesis is needed", Gutman continued, "that incorporates and then transcends the new history".3 In the relationship between national and regional history in Canada, however, difficulty immediately arises.

    International Journal of CO-OPERATIVE ACCOUNTING AND MANAGEMENT, 2020 VOLUME 3, ISSUE 3 DOI: 10.36830/IJCAM.202014 Locating the Contributions of the African Diaspora in the Canadian Co-operative Sector Caroline Shenaz Hossein, Associate Professor of Business & Society, York University, Canada Abstract: Despite Canada’s legacy of co-operativism, Eurocentrism dominates thinking in the Canadian co- op movement. This has resulted in the exclusion of racialized Canadians. Building on Jessica Gordon Nembhard’s (2014) exposure of the historical fact of African Americans’ alienation from their own cooperativism as well as the mainstream coop movement, I argue that Canadian co-operative studies are limited in their scope and fail to include the contributions of Black, Indigenous, and people of colour (BIPOC). I also argue that the discourses of the Anglo and Francophone experiences dominate the literature, with mainly white people narrating the Indigenous experience. Finally, I hold that the definition of co-operatives that we use in Canada should include informal as well as formal co-operatives. Guyanese economist C.Y. Thomas’ (1974) work has influenced how Canadians engage in co-operative community economies. However, the preoccupation with formally registered co-operatives excludes many BIPOC Canadians. By only recounting stories about how Black people have failed to make co-operatives “successful” financially, the Canadian Movement has missed many stories of informal co-operatives that have been effective in what they set out to do. Expanding what we mean by co-operatives for the Canadian context will better capture the impact of co-operatives among BIPOC Canadians. It is therefore surprising that this widely-appreciated expression of popular culture has received so little scholarly attention.1 Despite an impressive roster of Canadian cartoonists, the work of Peter Desbarats and Terry Mosher stands alone as a historical survey of the genre, and there is only one book-length monograph on Canadian editorial cartoons.2 Few Canadian cartoonists have attracted a serious biographer.3 Nevertheless, as the career of Donald McRitchie demonstrates, political cartoons reflect and reinforce aspects of popular culture, and for this reason they deserve greater attention as a form of public art.

(Ernie) Forbes’s Challenging the Regional Stereotype: Essays on the 20th Century Maritimes .1 This collection of his scholarship – published and unpublished – from the previous two decades emphasizes Forbes’s remarkable contribution to the historiography of Atlantic Canada. Perhaps more than any other historian, Ernie Forbes consistently and persuasively overturned entrenched ideas about the Atlantic region: he challenged the regional stereotype. Throughout his 31-year university teaching career, first at the University of Victoria and then at the University of New Brunswick, he revised our understanding of the underdevelopment of Atlantic Canada and the ways that political decisions made at the centre can have a longstanding and detrimental impact on the periphery. Ernie Forbes’s first publication – “Prohibition and the Social Gospel” – was the lead article in the 1971 debut issue of this journal. This article displays all the hallmarks of Forbes’ scholarship: clear and concise prose, a mastery of the empirical evidence, and a willingness to upend the established historical interpretation. The movement for prohibition in Nova Scotia was not, Forbes argued, an outgrowth of “puritanical zealots bent on suppressing the pleasures of others.” Rather, it was an outgrowth of a church-led progressive reform movement – the Social Gospel – that strove to “create a new society in which crime, disease and social injustice would be virtually eliminated.” 2 Although Forbes soon shifted his focus from progressive reform to politics, his work never lost sight of the importance of social justice, the relationship between good history and good policy, or the necessity of challenging historical convention.

    A United Church Presence in the Antigonish Movement: J.W.A. Nicholson and J.D.N. MacDonald JOHN H. YOUNG School of Religion, Queen’s University The Antigonish Movement, centred around the Extension Department of St. Francis Xavier University, represented a particular response to the poverty gripping much of the rural Maritimes even prior to the onset of the Depression. Moses Coady and Jimmy Tompkins, the two key leaders, were Roman Catholic priests; most of the next echelon of leaders and key workers in the Movement were also Roman Catholic. However, some clergy and lay members of other denominations either supported, or played an active role in, the Antigonish Movement, including two United Church ministers – J.W.A. Nicholson and J.D.N. MacDonald. This essay will briefly examine these two individuals, their motivations, the nature of their involvement, and the way in which they were perceived within the United Church, both during and subsequent to their direct involvement in the Antigonish Movement. J.W.A. Nicholson (1874-1961) was a contemporary of Coady and Tompkins. Born in 1874 in Cape Breton, as a young man he attended Pine Hill Divinity Hall in Halifax, then a Presbyterian college serving the Maritimes. After completing his B.D., he did post-graduate study in Edinburgh, followed by a period of study at the University of Berlin. After an initial pastorate in the Saint John area, Nicholson served at Inverness in Cape Breton from 1905-1911. He then took a call to St. James Presbyterian Church in Dartmouth, where he stayed until 1927.

    “We are the Rug Hooking Capital of the World”: Understanding Chéticamp Rugs (1927-2017) by © Laura Marie Andrea Sanchini A thesis submitted to the School of Graduate Studies In partial fulfilment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Folklore Memorial University December 3rd, 2018 St John’s Newfoundland Abstract This thesis is the story of how utilitarian material culture was transformed into a cottage industry, and eventually into high art. Chéticamp rug hooking is an artistic practice, one wrapped up in issues of taste, creativity, class and economics. Rug hooking in Chéticamp rose to prominence in the first half of the 20th century when Lillian Burke, a visiting American artist, set up a rug hooking cottage industry in the area. She altered the tradition to suit the tastes of wealthy patrons, who began buying the rugs to outfit their homes. This thesis examines design in rug hooking focusing on Chéticamp-style rugs. Captured within design aesthetics is what the rugs mean to both those who make and consume them. For tourists, the rugs are symbols of a perceived anti-modernism. Through the purchase of a hooked rug, they are able to bring home material reminders of their moment of experience with rural Nova Scotia. For rug hookers, rugs are a symbol of economic need, but also agency and the ability to overcome depressed rural economic conditions. Rug hooking was a way to have a reliable income in an area where much of the labour is dependent on unstable sources, such as natural resources (fishing, lumber, agriculture etc.).

    Who Were Coady and Tompkins? Dr. Moses Michael Coady was born on 3 January 1882 in Margaree Valley, Cape Breton. He was the eldest of 11 children and grew up on a small farm. At the age of 15, Coady attended school and was taught by Chris J. Tompkins, an older cousin and the brother of James (Jimmy) Tompkins. After high school, Coady attended teacher training and worked in Margaree for two years. Following this, he attended the Provincial Normal school in Truro, Nova Scotia, and became a teacher and principal at Margaree Forks. Dr. M. M. Coady, c. 1950.. 77-672-806. Beaton Institute, Cape Breton University. In 1903, Coady registered at St. Francis Xavier University (St. FX) in Antigonish and graduated in 1905 with a bachelor’s degree, successfully achieving a grade A teaching licence. Later that year, he was accepted to the Urban College in Rome, where he studied Theology and Philosophy until 1910. Upon returning to Nova Scotia, he was appointed as a teacher at St. FX’s university high school. He was awarded an MA in Education in 1914 and took over from Jimmy Tompkins as principal of the St. Francis Xavier high school. During this period Moses Coady began to visualize a community development movement and to reflect on the ways that the economic and social status of Nova Scotians might be improved. A priest and educator, Coady helped lead the Antigonish Movement, a people’s movement for economic and social justice that began in Nova Scotia in the 1920s. Savoie on the economic road ahead for New Brunswick and the Maritimes. The series carries a special emphasis on our region’s history and future in the context of Confederation, the 150th anniversary of which is celebrated today. I have often heard representatives of the region’s business community stressing the importance of greater cooperation between the three provincial governments. Some have told me that they favour Maritime political union, as I do. There are things that the business community could do to show the way and promote a Maritime perspective. The three provinces hold an annual ‘provincial’business hall of fame dinner to honour three business leaders. The business community would send a powerful message to the three provincial governments and to Maritimers if they were, instead, to hold one ‘Maritime’hall of fame event. The business community, not just government, has a responsibility for turning the region into something more than a ‘region of the mind.’ Regions of the mind have little in the way of policy instruments to promote economic development.
