01 Marcellin College’s Induction and Commissioning Mass

In early February we celebrated our Induction and Commissioning Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral. The Cathedral is not only the Mother Church of the Archdiocese of Melbourne it is also one of the architectural glories of Melbourne. The Principal Celebrant was the Most Reverend Denis Hart DD, Archbishop of Melbourne, who concelebrated with our own wonderful College Chaplain, Father John Carnie CssR. The magnificent singing of the Champagnat Choir and Cantors, under the direction of Mr Nicholas Cowall, Director of Music, and the College Music Staff, further enhanced this glorious occasion. For our Year 7 students, as well as other boys new to the College, this evening marked the beginning of their Marist journey. Each new student was welcomed into our community by our Principal, Mr Mark Murphy and Br Michael Green fms, Director of Marist Schools Australia. This was followed by the induction of the 2011 College Representative Council and Academic and Sport Captains by our Principal and Mr Paul Herrick, Regional Director of Marist Schools Australia. The highlight of the evening was the reading out of the Pledge of Commitment by the College Captain, Jack Stammers, and all members of the newly inducted SRC to the gathered College. In a spirit of prayer and celebration we gathered together as a faith community, around the table of our Lord, to begin 2011. Mrs Gail Coates

The question is the answer and the answer is the question because both sides are the same”. He acknowledges that such insights may be born of moments of great inspiration and others more slowly as an end product of thoughtful and persistent effort. She has a keen interest in social justice and a life changing experience for her was the Karibu immersion experience in Kenya, Nairobi, through the Edmund Rice network in 2006. Learning from the stories of people she met there was inspirational and Liz keeps in touch still with her Guide from the program. Liz finished her Masters of Education in Student Welfare at Melbourne University in 2007 and is excited to be a part of the dynamic and welcoming community of Marcellin College. An added dimension to this is that as a secondary student Liz attended Siena College and had some involvement with Marcellin as a student in school musicals. She realized her future direction would not involve singing and now enjoys reading, watching films, and has a self-confessed addiction to travel; India and Brazil being two of her highlights. 16 Time and Space Program

Many changes take place in adolescence and the transition through the Junior School is not necessarily an easy path – for mothers, fathers or their sons. Mother and Son Night and Father and Son Night was facilitated by Mr Bill Jennings from Melbourne, to provide “time and space” for mothers and fathers to connect with their sons and talk with other parents in a similar position.

It was evident how welcoming and open members of our Marcellin community are towards one another when numerous conversations between parents and boys began the evening. Highlights of the evenings include the parents and boys sharing a treasured story or item that emphasises the importance of the relationship, as well as the blessing. A few comments from the evening were: I told my Mum she is hard working. I thanked her for coming to the night which was a lot of fun. My Mum is responsible. I told other boys that you need to be nice and care for your Mum as she is special. The night was enjoyable. My Mum is supportive. It was a great night to get to know my Mum more , as well as other Mums. My advice to other Mums was to help your children have an effective homework routine. I had a great time bonding with my Dad. It was fantastic spending time with my Dad! It was good to engage with my son on a more emotional level – he isn’t normally keen to have these sorts of discussions. I do have great communication with my son but this experience was amazing!!! He wrote a beautiful letter to me! It was great to hear and learn from others experiences, particularly the boys. I really enjoyed taking the time to speak about these things with my son as we don’t tend to do it on a day to day basis. Felt more connected to my son than I have for some time. It was so rewarding and memorable. My son is lucky to be at Marcellin & have these experiences – some of us (parents) didn’t.

Marcellin College 2011 International Soccer Tour

This year saw the third International Soccer tour depart for three weeks to Rome, Venice, San Vito al Tagliamento (Friuli) and Singapore. A compliment of three staff (Mr D’Amico, Mr Houlihan and Mr Faelis) and seventeen boys made the trip, taking in seven games and numerous sites along the way.

Our boys were treated to some quality soccer as well as exceptional cuisine in Italy, while Singapore provided much needed warmth! Highlights for the trip included all our games, the Vatican, our time spent in Venice and San Vito, the Series A match as well as the time spent off pitch socializing Italy & Singapore with the opposition players.

Our boys benefitted from the social interactions that they had with the locals and thrived on the immersion of different cultures. For many boys, this was their first trip overseas and I am sure one that they will never forget.

The next scheduled tour is set to run in 2013. Who knows where the next adventure will take us!

20 Rugby at Marcellin

Marcellin Rugby has gotten off to a flying start in 2011. The build-up to the start of the season has been jam packed with many exciting opportunities for the students and staff. The first highlight of the season was a training session with Melbourne Rebels Adam Freier and Richard Kingi, Marcellin College’s very own Melbourne Rebels. Adam and Richard worked with a very excited and enthusiastic group of U13s and U14s before fine tuning the First XV boys. A video of the training session appeared on the Melbourne Rebels website and an article appeared in the Rebels vs Highlanders Match day program. At the end of first Term the new Year 7 Rugby boys had the time of their life when they went on a team bonding adventure day at the Clifford Park Activity Centre. Many a muddy Rugby boy arrived home after a day of rope ladders, mud pools and underground tunnels. In preparation of the season ahead the First XV went to Canberra for some tough pre-season games. St Edmund’s College and Marist College were far too strong but very welcoming and hospitable. The experience will give the First XV boys the best possible start to the 2011 season.

Mr Simon Strachan – Teacher in Charge of Rugby Leigh Montagna

Leigh Montagna, an old boy of Marcellin College and current AFL player with the , has been helping out the 1st XVIII Football team, in order to get a sense of what it is like to be a coach, and to pass on his expert knowledge of the game to the up and coming players of the future. Leigh has offered our players some great advice and insight into the world of AFL football by conducting drills similar to those used by the Saints. Leigh is currently undertaking a level 2 coaching course. Leigh attended Marcellin College from 1996-2001. He was an integral member of the various year level teams and was selected in the 1st XVIII during Year 10. Marcellin won two of its six AGSV premierships in 1999 and 2000. Leigh won the in the 1st XVIII in both year 11 and 12. This was the first time ever there has been a consecutive winner of the award, which is an achievement in itself considering the quality of footballers Marcellin has produced over the years. Leigh was also awarded the “Terrence Cleary Award” for sporting excellence in his final year at Marcellin. Beyond school Leigh was picked at number 37 to St Kilda in the AFL National Draft of 2001. He made his AFL debut for the Saints in 2002 against Collingwood. Leigh played in winning NAB Cup premiership teams in 2004 and 2008. He was selected in the All Australian Team in both 2009 and 2010, collecting many Brownlow votes and figuring in the St Kilda club Best and Fairest Award in both seasons, his best finish being second in 2010. Leigh is certainly again in career best form in 2011 and has played 154 games, kicking 88 goals thus far in his career. Whilst Leigh still has many great years to come as a player, beyond his playing days he would be particularly good in the coaching field, as evidenced by the way he interacted with the Marcellin boys at a number of training sessions during the term. The boys have really enjoyed having Leigh around as they know that he has gone through a similar experience as they have, on his journey to playing AFL football. On behalf of the 1st XVIII team and coach Vaughan Cleary, we would like to thank Leigh Montagna for coming down and sharing his knowledge with the boys and wish him luck for the rest of the 2011 AFL Season.
