Welcome all players, coaches and spectators to the 2012 Ontario Ultimate Championships

The North Bay Ultimate Players Association in conjunction with the City of North Bay and the Ontario Disc Sport Association is proud to host the inaugural 2012 Ontario Ultimate Championships on July 7th and 8th. We welcome all players, coaches and spectators to the beautiful City of North Bay and hope you enjoy our state-of-the-art Steve Omischl Sports Field Complex. We would like to thank everyone for your commit- ment and devotion to our sport and your enthusiasm to compete here this weekend.

The creation of this annual tournament is a direct result of Ultimate Canada’s initiative to have Provincial associations qualify teams for our National championships according to Sport Canada guidelines. We would like to thank North Bay Mayor, Al McDonald and Deputy Mayor, local Ultimate MVP and Honorary Tournament Chair, Sean Lawlor for their gracious support. As well, the City of North Bay Parks and Recreation staff, especially Melinda Fry, for all of their invaluable support and assistance in the preparation of this event. We could not have accomplished all that we have done without you.

We would also like to thank the Ontario Disc Sport Association for its pivotal role in the development of this new tournament. The hard work of outgoing Executive Director Christopher Lowcock and new Executive Director Ryan Briggs and the ODSA board of directors have been essential to the organizing, inviting and confirming of all the elite athletes that will converge here this weekend to compete for the chance to be crowned the very first Ontario Ultimate Champions! Thanks as well, to our generous sponsors, Rebuilt Resources Skill Development Inc., our community partners and many local collaborators for their outstanding support and contributions.

Finally, of course, thanks to the tournament organizing committee. This event is the result of your selfless vision, diligence and endless energy to create a top notch tournament. A huge personal thank you, to each of you, for your continued efforts goes to Sebastian Bell, Erik Nicholls, Steve McArthur, Josée Charland, Scotty Nicholls, Sabrina Giustra, Michela Chirico and Ian Lawson. As passionate Ultimate players, all the hours you have volunteered has guaranteed the success of this event. Thank you again!!

The sport of Ultimate demonstrates and nurtures many positive values that can benefit everyone, not just on the field, but in their daily lives too. Our unique Spirit of the Game approach to officiating is an example to all other sports of how to truly play competitively while still maintaining genuine sportsmanship, so for many years now it has been an honour and a privilege to serve the Ultimate community at a local, provincial and national level. I hope you will enjoy the first ever Ontario Ultimate Championships and encourage you to return to North Bay, to play again in the future!

Keep the spirit alive!

Sincerely, Erin Fitzgerald, Tournament Director 2012 Ontario Ultimate Championships A WELCOME FROM THE 2012 O.U.C. ORGANIZING COMMITTEE !

Since the announcement was made in March of this year, the organizing committee for the 2012 Ontario Ultimate Championships has been working feverishly to put together an event that participants and patrons will remember for years to come. The team that was assembled could not have been better. Our leader, Tournament Director Erin Fitzgerald, was instrumental in guiding us through the sometimes scary process of organizing this showcase event in a little less than five months. The rest of this crew was made up of current FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: BACK ROW - ERIN FITZGERALD, ERIK NICHOLLS, and past league champions, league past-presidents, MICHELA CHIRICO, SEB BELL, SCOTTY NICHOLLS, JOSÉE CHARLAND, and former and current national & world team players. IAN LAWSON. FRONT ROW - SABRINA GIUSTRA, STEVE McARTHUR

A special thanks has to go out to our main sponsor Rebuilt Resources Skills Development Inc., and to the Moose FM 106.3 Radio Station who have graciously promoted the event in monthly radio spots throughout the spring. Finally, without the support of the City of North Bay, namely the Parks, Recreation & Leisure Services department, and the tremendous generosity of the local business community, this event would not have been possible. We hope that you enjoy your stay here in the Gateway City and we wish you all the best of luck in the competition.

WELCOME TO THE 2012

ONTARIO ULTIMATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

First off, I would like to thank all those in attendance this weekend for their support and participation. It's through the commitment of Ontario’s Amateur Ultimate athletes that great events like this one are possible. I would also like to commend the local North Bay Ultimate Players Association organizing committee for their efforts over the past few months in putting together a truly high calibre Ultimate event.

In my new role as the Executive Director of the ODSA I've had the opportunity to meet or speak with a number of you over the past two months. I look forward to continue working with you and the Ontario Ultimate Community, helping our sport prosper and flourish.

The beginning of 2012 has seen the establishment of the ODSA's Ontario Ultimate Committee. The role of this committee is to act as a voice for Ontario's Ultimate community for our provincial sport organization (PSO), the ODSA and our national sport organization (NSO), Ultimate Canada. As the work of this committee continues to evolve we are hoping to establish other specialized sub-committees and working groups focusing on concerns like; permanent provincial competition structures, club and scholastic level junior development and related coaching certification programming. Over the past 12 months the ODSA has provided funding and staff support toward the development of the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) and the establishment of Ultimate’s Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) Model. These projects are key components in the recent recognition of Ultimate Canada as a National Sport Organization. This work will not only benefit Ontario’s Ultimate community but all Ultimate organizations across Canada for years to come.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our outgoing Executive Director, Chris Lowcock. Chris has been involved in the development of the organization since its inception. He served as the founding president of the ODSA and then worked as the Executive Director of the organization for the past 4 years. Chris was the driving force on the projects mentioned above. Some of the other highlights of his work include; the successful youth outreach program, the RADD tour, the establishment of a number of new Ultimate and Disc Golf clubs across the province and laying the foundation of a solid relationship with the Ontario Trillium Foundation. On behalf of the ODSA I would like to wish Chris all the best in his future endeavours.

If you have any suggestions, questions, or concerns about the ODSA Ultimate Committee or if you or someone you know are interested in helping to shape the future of Ultimate in Ontario, please feel free to contact me at any time.

Kind Regards, Ryan Briggs, Executive Director Ontario Disc Sports Association email: [email protected] phone: 1-855-THROW-IT ULTIMATE - IN TEN (10) SIMPLE RULES… © 2010 USAultimate.org WHAT IS THIS SPORT ALL ABOUT ANYWAY?

1) The Field: A rectangular shape with end zones at each end. A regulation field is 70 yards by 40 yards, with end zones 25 yards deep. 2) Initiate Play: Each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of their respective end zone line. The defense throws ("pulls") the disc to the offense. A regulation game has seven (7) players per team. 3) Scoring: Each time the offense completes a pass in the defense's end zone, the offense scores a point. 4) Movement of the Disc: The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a team- mate. Players may not run with the disc. The person with the disc ("thrower") has ten (10) seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the thrower ("marker") counts out the stall count. 5) Change of Possession: When a pass is not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, interception), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense. 6) Substitutions: Bench players may replace players in the game after a score or during an injury timeout. 7) Non-contact: No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are also prohibited. 8) Fouls: When a player initiates contact on another player a foul occurs. When a foul disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player committing the foul disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone. This is a self-governed game (e.g. no referees). 9) Self-Officiating: Players are responsible for their own foul & line calls. Players resolve their own disputes. 10) Spirit of the Game: Ultimate stresses sportsmanship and fair play. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, or the basic joy of play.

HISTORY OF NORTH BAY ULTIMATE ~ HOME OF THE 2-POINTER! HAPPY 35TH BIRTHDAY TO ULTIMATE FRISBEE IN NORTH BAY - SUBMITTED BY ED VALENTI

The sport that I’ve always loved is about to turn 35. North Bay Ultimate has one of the oldest leagues in the country with a uniqueness all it’s own and this fact is what makes it so special. The beginning came on a sunny, warm, spring day with the majestic Scollard Hall high school in the background. We had a “spare’s” worth of time to do something interesting and fun. Tag Football was the quintessential sport of first resort, at least for bored Scollard boys (Bears and football were like tequila and lemon – they just went together). But then it all changed as one day Billy came with a Frisbee disc – a Wham-O special disc ... originally known as the “Pluto Platter”. For us, a new game had started.

The rules of this game - Ultimate Frisbee - looked interesting for the most part. Unfortunately (or fortunately as some still believe) the rules were picked apart, twisted or dismissed as too complicated. To say things have changed would be an understatement. Ultimate Frisbee became Frisbee Football. From its “spare” start it had morphed into a game with end zones, referees, one hand only catches, an arm’s length “free” zone, 5 players – not 7, a football length field, discs flying into vehicular traffic, and finally, the most unique part, one that is distinctive to North Bay till this day – the 2 point play. These behind the back catches (for a 2 point score) were seen as adding flair to the game.

For most of us at the beginning, Frisbees were those plastic plates you could toss around, and not much more. But within a short time, the game had elevated to different strategies, and uses of strength. The North Bay leagues’ first season featured 3 teams - Trout Lake Marine, Greco’s and Valenti’s. At this time, Frisbee Football was a great game. It was a sport that differed in philosophy from the Ultimate version – allowing contact. That contact that led to referees – the inevitable result to which I’ve always viewed sports and com- petition. But in order to compete outside the realm of its own league, Frisbee Football was forced to adapt back to its original Ultimate roots. North Bay teams competing in tournaments were finding themselves at a disadvantage.

The sport is evolving towards its’ ultimate goal – an Olympic sport. A balance will be needed between the philosophy of the sport, the spirit of the game and the competitive nature that exists at the highest levels of competition. Look how far we’ve already come! Good luck to all the athletes competing. FIELD LAYOUT

STEVE OMISCHL SPORTS FIELD COMPLEX ~ 1105 LAKESHORE DRIVE MUD ~

TEAM CAPTAIN: CHRIS SANDERSON Guelph's MuD has a formidable track record, bursting onto the scene and straight to the CUC National Champion- ships in the inaugural 2010 year. Last summer, in a Worlds qualifying year which saw the mixed division flooded with talent from the women’s and open divisions, MuD surprised everyone with another 7th place finish at Nationals. MuD is a team based primarily on team chemistry. While most teams rely on “X’s and O’s”, they rely on their ability to play with each other and understand how our team- mates play together. This chemistry allows them to succeed when plays falter and breakdown. On defense they pride themselves on giving everything they’ve got and making other teams work for every inch of field they get. This season MuD is lead by Chris Sanderson, Bryanne Root and Andy Kubinec. So far a third place finish at TUF was followed by a solid first place at Northern Flights with a split squad.

ROY ~

TEAM CAPTAINS: MICHEAL KUKUCSKA, MIKE FULLGRAF, DANIEL LINDQUIST ROY is the third team in the Toronto open system which also includes GOAT and Grand Trunk. After missing out on CUC in 2011, ROY has reloaded with a boatload of new talent, returning only 7 players from the previous year. Drawing heavily from the university talent pool, you can count on ROY not only to provide great games on the fields, but also great fun off of them. Expect to see several "Roy Boys" move up & play with GOAT or Grand Trunk in the very near future.

BYTOWN FLATBALL CLUB (BFC) ~ -GATINEAU

TEAM CAPTAIN: KATIE WOOD Bytown Flatball Club (BFC) has been Ottawa-Gatineau’s top mixed ultimate team since its inception in 2007. In partnership with their development team BigFish, they offer a venue for the top mixed players in the Ottawa area to develop and compete at a national level. Building on the success of previous years, their aspiration is to become one of the premier mixed teams in the country.

THE MUSKIES ~ NORTH BAY

TEAM CAPTAIN: IAN LAWSON The Muskies represent North Bay’s first co-ed entry in a Regional or National event since the 2003 CUC in Montreal. While the touring team presence has been waning in North Bay in the last couple years, this group includes many experienced vets and a few young guns trying to repre- sent on their home turf. The Muskies are aiming to build cohesiveness and hope to learn to win.

QUICK & DIRTY ~ TORONTO

TEAM CAPTAINS: GRAEME HENDERSON, MATT QUATTRO, DAVE MCDONALD Variations of this team have been together touring for about 5 years now, as they have always had trouble keeping a consistent roster together until this year. Q&D members play together as a team in the Toronto Ultimate League with individuals also playing in the Hamilton, Burlington & leagues. This season Q&D has played the May Day Tournament (2nd), Toronto Ultimate Festival (8th ), and Gender Blender (12th or 13th... but come on, it is Gender Blender!)

WICKED ~ OTTAWA TEAM COACHES: HALI GERNON, EVAN WATERMAN, CLARE GEE TEAM CAPTAINS: IZZY BEDARD, JULIA MANCONI

Wicked, the female competitive Junior Ultimate team from Ottawa, is a combination of older veteran players mixed with young, fresh faces, all with a common love for ultimate. Captains Izzy Bédard and Julia Manconi, two veterans from the former Ottawa co-ed team, ResurreXion, help to the lead the team under the watchful eye of their coaches. Even though the ages range from 11 to 18 years old, all of the girls work hard and well together to perfect new skills, improve their game and defy gravity! BIGFISH ~ OTTAWA

TEAM CAPTAINS: AMOS LEE, HEATHER ARMSTRONG, SANDRA HANSON BigFish is a developmental competitive Ultimate team that has been in existence for 8 years. WHIPLASH ~ KITCHENER-WATERLOO

TEAM CAPTAINS: LINDSEY PARDYS, DAN RALPH, JON HINES Whiplash is a new mixed team based out of Kitchener-Waterloo. This is its first year in existence and they are looking forward to seeing how its presence can unite players in the area in the mixed division. The leadership team consists of Dan Ralph and Lindsey Pardys as team captains, and Jon Hines as team coach. Their season so far has been focused on building the team, but they have been happy with a 5th place finish at Soggy Bottom Bowl in Guelph, a 1st place finish at MayDay in Waterloo, and a tie for 5th place at Northern Flights in North Bay.

GLIDE ~ OTTAWA

TEAM CAPTAINS: ROBERT IVES, JASON SOLOMAN GLIDE is a competitive mixed ultimate team from Canada's capital region. Their players come from throughout the Ottawa valley, the city core, and Gatineau, Quebec. Their mission is to qualify for, and compete at, CUC 2012 in Victoria. GLIDE's entry into high level competition began in the summer of 2011. The team was largely the brainchild of captain/coach Jason Solomon who observed that there were a lot of high-level players in the region who wanted to play at a competitive level but who - for various reasons – were not on a team. After just miss- ing qualification for CUC 2011 in Ottawa, GLIDE is back for another run at qualifying for Nationals.

ZEN ASYLUM ~ TORONTO

TEAM CAPTAIN: BILLY LEUNG, KIERAN BOL, HEATHER GILMOUR ZEN was conceived in 2004, and since its inception has become a stepping stone for an abundance of touring players across all levels and divisions. ZEN attended Nationals in 2006 and 2011, and are looking to return to the National stage in 2012!

UNION ~ TORONTO

TEAM CAPTAINS: DILHAN KURU, WARREN TANG This is the second season for Union. They began last year as an amalgamation of Big Hammers and Monster which were the top two mixed teams in Toronto. They have added players this year from open tryouts and look to be improved. Last year they placed 1st at Regionals and 5th at Na- tionals. This year they have played two tournaments, TUF and Genderblender, and won them both.

YARRR ~

TEAM CAPTAINS: MIKE MILLAR, LP BLOUIN, KELLY FAGAN YARRR is the competitive touring team from the Durham Region of Ontario, representing the Durham Ultimate Club (DUC). This is their second season of competitive play and their goal this year is to improve upon their 8th place finish at last year's Regionals.

TOO BAD ~ TORONTO

TEAM CAPTAIN: HARRY BURKMAN Too Bad is an Ontario open touring team now in its 18th season. The team has competed in 16 Canadian Ultimate Championships (with the 17th upcoming in Victoria this August), 3 Club World Championships and twice at Paganello in Italy.

FIREBIRD ~ OTTAWA

TEAM CAPTAIN: RYAN BRIGGS Firebird is Ottawa’s Open division developmental team. The team combines eager and invigorated youth with an experienced leadership core. Firebird is excited to have the chance to return to the Canadian Ultimate Championships this year after a 1-year hiatus.

PRODIGY ~ HAMILTON

TEAM CAPTAINS: TJ REEDS, STACEY SAMIS, DOM ROOS PRODiGY ultimate is in their second year on the touring scene, with their first year ending in a trip to Nationals where they finished 12th. This year PRODiGY has looked to step it's game up to the next level and they are hoping to make some noise in the mixed scene. So far to date this season they have finished 2nd in TUF, and 3rd at Comedy of Errors. The roster this year has been re- vamped with some new talent along with some great experienced players, which is providing much more depth! Watch out for PRODiGY this season!

FRESH ~ GUELPH & AREA TEAM COACHES: JASON HOYT, ANDREW LEFLER TEAM CAPTAINS: SEAN ROBINSON, GEDDY JOHNSON FresH is currently enjoying its second season as a competitive touring team. Designed to be a competitive development team, the level of play has rapidly grown from this group of players. This group comes from Guelph, Waterloo, Toronto, King- ston and Ottawa making it one of the most unique teams in the mixed division.

OVERDRIVE ~ GREATER TORONTO AREA TEAM COACHES: CARLA DIFILIPPO, ERICA TUCKER, GARY WANG, JOE ZICARO Born to perform, OverDrive Junior Girls are an ultimate frisbee team that competes provincially and nationally. THE GIANTS ~

TEAM CAPTAIN: JOHN GOTWALS Hailing from the western shores of Lake Superior, The Giants were established four years ago, the same year that Thunder Bay Ultimate was born. The team works constantly to promote and grow the sport in their hometown, often running clinics, working with schools, and recruiting new players. Since their creation the Giants have traveled to two tournaments each year, Beat the Skeeters in Win- nipeg and MUDI in Minneapolis. Due in part to the large distances required for travel, this year marks the first time a team from Thunder Bay has ever participated in Ultimate Canada's summer series.

THE SHADS ~ NORTH BAY TEAM COACHES: SEBASTIAN BELL, MICHELA CHIRICO TEAM CAPTAINS: JACK DALEY, RYAN DALEY As a whole the team is very new to the sport of Ultimate. Most members started playing at the competitive level last season in which they played co-ed and competed at Nationals in Ottawa. As a typical North Bay team they rely heavily on their great athleticism and exceptional defense with the occasional long bomb in their repertoire. The team currently has one member of the Junior All- Stars from 2011 Nationals, Ryan Daley, who has grown immensely as an ultimate player in the offseason. Look out for these youngsters as they compete with some of the best players in North Bay’s adult ultimate league (NBUPA), which has several world class ultimate players of its own.

CAPITAL PUNISHMENT ~ OTTAWA TEAM COACHES: HAGAN RIGLIN, MIKE WRONSKI, MIKE BOUCHER TEAM CAPTAINS: DECEBAL MICHAUD, ADAM BOUCHER, ERIK BURTON, OWEN WATT Capital Punishment is the Ottawa-based competitive Junior Open team. Their great coaching staff has set up two very successful training camps already this season. The first had Capital Punishment pitted against Phoenix and the second, a camping weekend, against a mix of various competitive players. Both events helped the team hone its skills and to bond as a unit. It also gave the captains a feel for their new leadership roles. The team has many veteran players such as Adam Boucher, Adam Blanchfield, Walker Gee & Ethan Brady, some of whom are playing their final year of juniors, and many promising rookies who contribute to a formidable team which ranges in age from 14 to 18.
