Dr. Maia Pank Mertz and to the other members of my advisory committee, Drs. Patti Lather, Laurel Richardson, and Anna Soter for their support, inspiration, and good will. I have had many productive and spirited discussions about the nature and purpose of inquiry with my fellow doctoral students, and I am grateful for their time and energy. During our marriage, my husband. Professor George R. St.Pierre, has exemplified the courage, brilliance, and generosity of spirit in both his personal and academic encounters to which I aspire. Our early conversations about the nature of this study as well as his later explanation of entropy and the second law of thermodynamics significantly influenced its direction. I am also indebted to my co-researchers, Elizabeth H. Brummitt and Marguerite L. Stem, who graciously serve as on-site experts in this continuing investigation. During the writing of this document, I have often found myself lingering on the aesthetics of existence practiced by a dear friend in Essex County, Blanche S. Montague. Finally, 1 am most grateful to the women of Essex County whose ethical practices of freedom have guided this study since its inception. Ill VITA 1969 A. • Young Americans to Emotional Rescue: Selected Meetings
YOUNG AMERICANS TO EMOTIONAL RESCUE: SELECTING MEETINGS BETWEEN DISCO AND ROCK, 1975-1980 Daniel Kavka A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2010 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Katherine Meizel © 2010 Daniel Kavka All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Disco-rock, composed of disco-influenced recordings by rock artists, was a sub-genre of both disco and rock in the 1970s. Seminal recordings included: David Bowie’s Young Americans; The Rolling Stones’ “Hot Stuff,” “Miss You,” “Dance Pt.1,” and “Emotional Rescue”; KISS’s “Strutter ’78,” and “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”; Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy“; and Elton John’s Thom Bell Sessions and Victim of Love. Though disco-rock was a great commercial success during the disco era, it has received limited acknowledgement in post-disco scholarship. This thesis addresses the lack of existing scholarship pertaining to disco-rock. It examines both disco and disco-rock as products of cultural shifts during the 1970s. Disco was linked to the emergence of underground dance clubs in New York City, while disco-rock resulted from the increased mainstream visibility of disco culture during the mid seventies, as well as rock musicians’ exposure to disco music. My thesis argues for the study of a genre (disco-rock) that has been dismissed as inauthentic and commercial, a trend common to popular music discourse, and one that is linked to previous debates regarding the social value of pop music.

THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF BENSON, ARIZONA HELD JANUARY 13, 2014, AT 7:00 P.M. AT CITY HALL, 120 W. 6TH STREET, BENSON, ARIZONA CALL TO ORDER: Mayor King called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. with the Pledge of the Allegiance. ROLL CALL: Present were: Mayor Toney D. King, Sr., Vice Mayor Al Sacco, Councilmembers Pat Boyle, Ron Brooks, Jeff Cook, Chris Moncada and Peter Wangsness (via telephone). EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION: None PROCLAMATION: None PUBLIC HEARING: None CALL TO THE PUBLIC: Mayor King stated he would be limiting speakers to 5 minutes to address the Council. Edythe Figueroa stated she had been to Council meetings and topics are often focused on growth, but she notices a lot of vacant homes and stated the City appears to be experiencing an exodus of its habitants. Ms. Figueroa then stated the City spends a bazillion dollars on a golf course with new golf carts, millions on painting murals and repairing restrooms at the park, but they don’t capitalize on any work that has been done by the most accomplished people in our community, our children. Ms. Figueroa then stated the school system has been rated the top school system in the entire great State of Arizona, yet aside from the small one-time reference by the local media, there has been nothing else. Ms. Figueroa stated everyone watched a community be formed in Vail with a population increase that was more than the entire population of Benson. Ms. Figueroa stated marketing paid off and the next time the Council is talking about what the City needs, they need to remember they can keep doing what they are doing and watch our children grow up and leave or the City can grow.

  • WHERE ARE THEY NOW? March 2014
WHERE ARE THEY NOW? March 2014 First and foremost, huge congratulations are due to NYMT Producer JEREMY WALKER who has recently been made a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) in recognition of his "achievements in providing pre-professional education and musical theatre stage experience to young people." This is a signal honour – and richly deserved. (Other Fellows include Dame Judi Dench, Peter Ustinov, Janet Baker, Stephen Hawking and Charles Dickens! Distinguished company!) THE BIG SCREEN IDRIS ELBA (Guys and Dolls, 1990) has been dominating the headlines recently as Nelson Mandela in MANDELA, THE LONG WALK TO FREEDOM. (The NYMT sang for Nelson Mandela in 2002 when he came to London to launch the MANDELA FOUNDATION UK . One of the busiest in the business at the moment must be JIM STURGESS (The Ragged Child, 1993) who currently has no less than five films in the pipeline – THE LION’S SHARE, THE BIG SHOT, LONDON FIELDS, ELECTRIC SLICK and ELIZA GRAVES. Equally busy is BEN BARNES (The Ballad of Salomon Pavey, 1996; Bugsy Malone, 1997; The Ragged Child, 1999; The Dreaming, 2002) who has three films in the offing, GOD ONLY KNOWS, ZENDOG and the spectacular SEVENTH SON. Also busy is SHERIDAN SMITH (Pendragon, 1994; Tin Pan Ali, 1995; Bugsy Malone, 1996; The Kissing Dance, 1998), hilarious in POWDER ROOM also giving a fine performance in THE 7.39 on BBC 1 as well as packing them in at The Noel Coward Theatre as Titania. Watch out for her on television later this year as Cilla Black. Following his fine work in LES MISERABLES, EDDIE REDMAYNE (The Ballad of Salomon Pavey, 1999) has two new films about to emerge –THEORY OF EVERYTHING and JUPITER ASCENDING while one of the special guests at the Christmas Concert in December, TOBY JONES (The Leaving of Liverpool, 1981) is also in GOD ONLY KNOWS with Ben Barnes, as well as in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER and SERENA.

  • Out and About with the Vic-Wells
President: Vice President: No. 480 - September 2012 Simon Russell Beale CBE Nickolas Grace Price 50p when sold Out and About with the Vic-Wells Shakespeare at the British Museum There will be a Vic-Wells visit to the British Museum’s current exhibition Shakespeare: staging the world on Monday, 1st October 2012. The exhibition provides a new insight into the emerging role of London as a world city four hundred years ago, interpreted through the innovative perspective of Shakespeare’s plays - and features over 190 objects. The exhibition creates a unique dialogue between these objects drawn from the museum’s collection. Great paintings, rare manuscripts, maps, drawings, armour, coins and other intriguing objects are all examined through the lens of Shakespeare’s plays. Shakespeare: staging the world also explores the theatre-going experience at the time. The newly built playhouses were situated in the suburbs: Bankside was an area with a dangerous and notorious reputation. The theatres needed to attract large numbers of playgoers and so performances had to appeal to a wide spectrum of society, from groundlings to courtiers. Objects excavated from the sites of the Globe and Rose theatres, such as a sucket fork for sweetmeats and the skull of a bear, illustrate the Southwark of Shakespeare’s day, the cultural world inhabited by the playhouse, which rubbed shoulders with bear-baiting arenas as well as brothels and pubs. The British Museum has produced, working with the Royal Shakespeare Company, a series of new digital interventions which appear throughout the exhibition, allowing visitors to encounter Shakespeare’s words and characters alongside the objects on The Lyte Jewel display.
