Northern -- The North State Challenge Series event scheduled for July 19th at Shasta Raceway Park has been canceled. For the past two weeks, the Redwood Empire Fairgrounds has been used as a Fire Camp; forcing Ukiah Speedway to shut down. After meeting with Redwood Empire Fair and Cal Fire officials, Ukiah Speedway will be able to reopen beginning July 12th. The speedway will then be able to start the daunting task of mak- ing up the events they were forced to miss. The NSCS and Ukiah Speedway share a common set of officials and are both promoted by the Aiken family. As a result of the shared staff the decision has been made to cancel the NSCS event. Border Patrol finds 16 migrants in padlocked truck near San Diego SAN DIEGO (AP) — Border Patrol agents have found 16 suspected illegal immigrants in a locked truck near San Diego. They were discovered quickly, and no injuries were reported. Border Patrol spokesman Mark Endicott says agents spotted the migrants early Thursday when they crossed the border near Tecate, about 35 miles east of San Diego. Agents followed them to a parking lot less than a mile away, where they filed into the truck. The door was closed with what the spokesman calls a heavy-duty padlock. The driver and a passenger were arrested on felony smug- gling charges. Also on Thursday, Customs and Border Protection says agents in San Diego intercepted a motor boat with 11 illegal immigrants about 15 miles off the coast. Woman accused of torching parents’ home, attempting to kill them SAN JOSE (AP) — A woman accused of trying to kill her parents by burning their home is being held without bail on attempted murder and arson charges. Police say 52-year-old Jann Lisa Gilkey set fire to the Los Altos home around 2 a.m. Saturday while her mother, father and another relative were inside. No one was hurt. Gilkey was arrested several hours later at her home in Mountain View. She made a brief appearance in Santa Clara County Superior Court on Wednesday during which she yelled a racial slur at a deputy and asked for her case to be transferred to another judge. Fiancee of man charged with sex crimes against 15-year-old girl surrenders NEWPORT BEACH (AP) — The fiancee of a magazine photographer charged with having sex with a 15-year-old girl surrendered to police Thursday amid allegations she arranged the sexual meetings, prosecutors said. Michelle Hecker, 31, is accused of aiding and abetting Jason Ellis’ sexual relationship with the girl by picking the girl up from her parents’ home and bringing her to meet Ellis. Hecker and Ellis each face three sex charges and three counts of committing lewd acts — all felonies, said Farrah Emami, spokeswoman for the Orange County district attor- ney’s office. They face up to seven years in prison if convicted on all charges. Ellis and Hecker, who appeared in court hours after her sur- render, are scheduled to be arraigned July 18. Prosecutors said Ellis, 33, took the girl on movie and dinner dates and had sex with her over the last year. Emami said Hecker met the girl when she was 14 and gained the trust of her parents. Hecker picked her up from her parents’ home under the pretense of going horseback riding but took her to meet Ellis, she said. The parents became suspicious and hired a private investigator to follow their daughter. Prosecutors said the girl told authorities she loved Ellis. Ellis, whose photos have appeared on magazine covers such as Elle and Muscle & Fitness, was charged on Tuesday after eluding authorities for several days. Calls to Hecker’s attorney, Ron MacGregor, were not immediately returned Thursday afternoon. 16 – FRIDAY, JULY 11, 2008 WEATHER THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL . 3-DAY FORECAST SUN AND MOON REGIONAL WEATHER CALIFORNIA CITIES Shown is today s weather.
