  • Spain, Portugal, and the Sierra Nevada Mountains March 6 – 20, 2018 Trip Leader: Hal Sparks Davis
Trip Report for the Ski Club Website: Spain, Portugal, and the Sierra Nevada Mountains March 6 – 20, 2018 Trip Leader: Hal Sparks Davis In early March, twenty-six Jacksonville Ski Club members enjoyed a wonderful two week tour of the Iberian Peninsula. We started in Portugal where we rode Tuk Tuks around Lisbon, enjoyed delicious seafood and toured monuments dedicated to the famous explorers who discovered and opened up the American continent. We also had a Port Wine tasting in Sintra, visited the Pena Palace and made our way out to Cabo da Roca, the wild and rugged westernmost point in Europe, where the wind was blowing about 80 mph. After our time in Portugal we flew to Malaga, birthplace of Picasso, and transferred to the beautiful and interesting city of Granada. The clubs of the Florida Ski Council sent a total of almost 300 people to Granada, and the activities were spectacular. We attended an exciting horse show and private mock bull fight in the city arena and afterwards we enjoyed an amazing Flamenco Show in a beautiful palace. The tour of Granada and the magnificent Alhambra Palace were equally fascinating. Granada is a city rich in tradition and history, with strong Moorish influence in its culture and architecture. It is the birthplace of Tapas, and it is the place where King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella decided to finance Christopher Columbus on his voyages to the new world. Our travelers took advantage of the extensive tour program offered by Holidaze Travel through the Ski Council and many of our travelers skied for several days on the Sierra Nevada Mountains, in sight of the Mediterranean Sea.

  • S Hit the Slopes! Ski and Snowboard in Madrid
Let’s hit the slopes! Ski and snowboard in Madrid Yep, that’s right. Just when you thought Madrid couldn’t get any better, that it was a city purely of terrazas, tapas, cañas and sunshine, winter rolls around and you discover it has yet more to offer. What’s not to love about a place where you can soak up the sun by the pool in the summer, then ski the hell out of some mountains in the winter? After an unseasonably warm start to the season, it looks like we’re finally in for some snow, so get your gear on and let’s go! Where? There are three ski areas near the capital: Puerto de Navacerrada Image from Puerto de Navacerrada’s Facebook Puerto de Navacerrada is the closest ski area to Madrid, around 65km away, but it’s also the smallest. You can download the piste map here. Valdesquí Image from Valdesquí’s Facebook Valdesquí is around 75km from Madrid, in the next valley over from Puerto de Navacerrada. Although it’s a little further away, it’s worth the extra mileage as it’s a lot bigger than its neighbour (see the piste map here). However, its proximity to the capital means it can get very busy. La Pinilla Image from La Pinilla’s Facebook La Pinilla is located just over the border in Castilla y León and is the furthest ski area from the capital, around 120km away. It also covers a fairly large area (piste map here) but there are usually fewer people, due to its more remote location.

This work presents the Guadalfeo Monitoring Network in Sierra Nevada (Spain), a snow mon- itoring network in the Guadalfeo Experimental Catchment, a semiarid area in southern Europe representa- tive of snowpacks with highly variable dynamics on both annual and seasonal scales and significant topo- graphic gradients. The network includes weather stations that cover the high mountain area in the catch- ment and time-lapse cameras to capture the variability of the ablation phases on different spatial scales. The data sets consist of continuous meteorological high-frequency records at five automatic weather stations located at different altitudes ranging from 1300 to 2600 m a.s.l. that include precipitation, air temperature, wind speed, air relative humidity and the short- and longwave components of the incoming radiation, dating from 2004 for the oldest station (2510 m a.s.l.) (https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.895236); additionally, daily data sets of the imagery from two time-lapse cameras are presented, with different scene area (30 m × 30 m, and 2 km2, respectively) and spatial resolution, that consist of fractional snow cover area and snow depth from 2009 (https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.871706) and snow cover maps for selected dates from 2011 (https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.898374).
