ADVENTISM IN THE LIGHT OF FREEDOM – A Community Bible Study with Jonathan Leonardo September 25-October 2 • Sabbath Worship at 9:15 & 11:45 am & Nightly at 7:00 pm (In Person & Streaming via YouTube & Facebook)

Why am I a Seventh-day Adventist? How do I make sense of the investigative judgement and Jesus’ ministry in light of freedom from sin? Do we have a prophetic voice or am I here because of community and culture? These questions will be pursued as we journey together for a week of study with Jonathan Leonardo. In light of freedom from sin, Jonathan is excited to share with us and dialogue together for a week of community exploration on why we have a mission and message that is relevant and life giving.

RELIVING MARK is a documentary drama filmed in Israel that examines the portrait of Jesus in the earliest written account of His life —the Gospel of Mark. This six-part series follows the fundamental question that guides Mark’s Gospel, “Who is Jesus of Nazareth?” In answering this question, the series, which is written and hosted by Dr. Carl Cosaert, Professor of Biblical Studies at Walla Walla University, carefully examines the Gospel of Mark in light of its historical context, recent archaeological discoveries, as well as Jewish customs and practices. MAKE A DIFFERENCE AS A HOSPICE VOLUNTEER Needed Now • Adventist Health Hospice Throughout the Portland area, Adventist Health Hospice patients need your gift of time as a volunteer! There is no experience needed to be a Patient Companion Volunteer--just a compassionate heart for people and the desire to make a patient’s remaining days as fulfilling as possible. Sometimes, it’s just to talk or read to them or share stories and laughter...at other times...you could help record a life history, play music, cards or board games with them, and even share a hobby with them. Caregivers need the blessing of your time to take care of themselves. This allows them to return “recharged” to tend to their loved one. Hospice patients sometimes have no family and can be greatly moved by your presence. Volunteers work out in the field - in patient’s homes, adult care homes, or nursing homes, wherever a patient might call home. The hours are flexible, whether you can commit a few hours a week, or just a few hours a month. We provide thorough training. If you feel called, please contact the Adventist Health Hospice Volunteer Coordinator at 503/251- 6192, ext. 56420 or by email at [email protected].

NORTH AMERICAN DIVISION

North American Division Position on Requests for Religious Exemptions to Vaccine Requirements Voted recommendations to NAD Administration regarding requests for religious exemptions to vaccine requirements: The North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists (NAD) is committed to sharing hope and wholeness through the healing ministry of Christ by promoting the Church’s historic health message. This includes caring for our own bodies as the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19,20) and ministering to the health of others within our community (Isaiah 58).

In line with this commitment, the NAD fully supports the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s statement encouraging “responsible immunization/vaccination,” and as such has “no religious or faith-based reason not to encourage [its] adherents to responsibly participate in protective and preventive immunization programs.”

While the Church’s statement recognizes it is “not the conscience of the individual church member, and recognize[s] individual choices,” the choice not to be vaccinated is not based on Seventh-day Adventist Church teachings or doctrine. For this reason, the Adventist church in North America does not provide Church-endorsed vaccine exemption request letters.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church respects convictions of conscience. While the NAD cannot endorse that vaccine refusal represents Adventist teachings, your local Union Public Affairs and Religious Liberty ministry is available to advise you in writing your own letter if you choose to pursue an individual vaccine exemption.
