24 Parent TESTIMONIAL Mother: Sandy Martinez Daughter: Alyssa Martinez 6 years old Nephew: Mason Rosado 4 years old

Sandy Martinez, mother of 6 year old Alyssa Martinez and aunt of 4- year old Mason Rosado, has entered her daughter and nephew into swim lessons offered at the San Pedro Park pool this summer. Alyssa previously took swim lessons that were only one time a week, but that was not consistent enough. Sandy took advantage of the free lessons offered through San Antonio Sports Viva Swim For Life, presented by University Health System, which Alyssa and Mason now attend three times a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Humana has sponsored five San Antonio Parks & Recreation pools, which has allowed the city to offer free lessons. Sandy is uncomfortable around the water because she can hardly swim, so providing her daughter with the opportunity to learn is important to her. Sandy does not want her daughter to have the same uneasy feeling she has when around the water.

Now the Martinez’s family visits pools outside of lessons to practice swimming and to enjoy a nice day out in the sun and near the water. Sandy says that Alyssa is able to swim short distances without assistance. The end of the summer she expects Alyssa to be able to swim longer distances due to the wideness of the San Pedro Park Swimming Pool.

“As an adult, I don’t want my child to be uneasy around the water. I want her to enjoy her summer. If there’s a swimming party, I want her to go. I want her to grow up and to be safe and to have fun and to be able to protect herself. Because if anything were to happen to her, I can’t go and save her as quickly as I would like. I want her to at least depend on herself and have those swimming fundamentals to know what to do in that situation. This is offering that for her.”
