Graydon Submitted to the Department of Comparative Media Studies on May 10, 2019 in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Comparative Media Studies ABSTRACT The state-sponsored news network RT (formerly Russia Today) was launched in 2005 as a platform for improving Russia's global image. Fourteen years later, RT has become a self- described tool for information warfare and is under increasing scrutiny from the United States government for allegedly fomenting unrest and undermining democracy. It has also grown far beyond its television roots, achieving a broad diffusion across a variety of digital platforms. -

Demonizing the Russian Media: Shoot the Messenger and Obscure the Message
Demonizing the Russian Media: Shoot the Messenger and Obscure The Message RT in the Eye of a Media Storm By Danny Schechter Region: Russia and FSU Global Research, March 08, 2014 Theme: Media Disinformation In-depth Report: UKRAINE REPORT James Kirchick is just the neutral reporter the Daily Beast would assign to report on the ideological controversy surrounding the Russian backed RT-TV Channel’s coverage of the crisis in the Ukraine. The Beast lives up to its name by sending a hardcore polemical ideologue to uncover what he predictably labels as ideological media bias. Kirchickis a veteran of the anti-communist wars, now revived as the anti Putin wars, not some neutral journo crusading for democracy. According to Wikipedia, he is a fellow with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies in Washington, prior to this he was writer-at-large for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. He is a graduate of the New Republic, Murdoch’s Weekly Standard and writes for Azure, a magazine that described itself as pro-Zionist and freemarket. Ok, just so we know who are dealing with here. And now, to bolster his “credibility” he presents himself as a victim in his latest article that exposes himself, far more than his target, asserting that his rights as a journalist were somehow compromised because of a gutsy quest for truth. Here’s his exhibit: •The Headline: “Watch RT, Putin’s TV Network, Call the Cops on Me” •The Lead:“That’s what happens, it seems, when you ask some simple questions outside RT’s Washington headquarters.” •The Polemic: “What would possess an American to work for a Russian propaganda outlet, especially now that the world is on the brink of a potential war in Eastern Europe? I asked that question of about two dozen people coming in and out of the Washington headquarters of RT, the Kremlin-funded television network that has become infamous in recent days for whitewashing Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. -

More than half of Ghana’s 25 million people live in rural areas, most without access to electricity. It’s a problem that affects families on a daily basis and limits their access to quality health care, education and jobs. The Government of Ghana devised a plan to bring electricity to over 500 remote towns. Citi’s long-standing pan-African presence allowed us to work with government leaders to provide long-term fi nancing for this project. The result is better hospitals, schools and opportunities for the Ghanaian people. For over 200 years, Citi’s job has been to believe in people and help make their ideas a reality. citi.com/progress © 2015 Citibank, N.A. NEW INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTERS AND THE GLOBAL ECONOMY: SITES OF CONTESTATION by CHRISTOPHER M. TOULA Under the Direction of Amelia H. Arsenault, PhD ABSTRACT Over the last two decades, a variety of states such as China, Russia, Iran, Venezuela, France, South Korea, and Japan have funded 24-hour news stations, called international broadcasters (IB), to frame their policies for foreign publics. While a variety of scholars have acknowledged the proliferation of state-funded media channels, they have also elided key features of IBs. Research in contra-flow theory, strategic narrative theory, and public diplomacy analyze IBs as tools of state power intended to promote state interests, but do not analyze content. Meanwhile, scholars of global media examine IBs as part of the global media system, but omit the broadcaster’s state funding. Building on these complementary but often disparate groups of inquiry into international broadcasting, this dissertation provides this dissertation provides a comparative analysis of the economic coverage of four international broadcasters: Russia Today, China Central Television, Al-Jazeera English, and Deutsche Welle. -
Russia's Favored Outlet Is an Online News Giant. Youtube Helped
10/24/2017 Russia’s Favored Outlet Is an Online News Giant. YouTube Helped. - The New York Times https://nyti.ms/2h4j4N7 TECHNOLOGY Russia’s Favored Outlet Is an Online News Giant. YouTube Helped. By DAISUKE WAKABAYASHI and NICHOLAS CONFESSORE OCT. 23, 2017 SAN FRANCISCO — When the state-backed Russian news channel RT became the first news organization to surpass one billion views on YouTube in 2013, it marked the achievement with a retrospective of its most popular videos and a special guest — one of the Google-owned site’s senior executives. Robert Kyncl, a YouTube vice president who has since become its chief business officer, joined an RT anchor in a studio, where he praised RT for bonding with viewers by providing “authentic” content instead of “agendas or propaganda.” But now, as investigators in Washington examine the scope and reach of Russian interference in United States politics, the once-cozy relationship between RT and YouTube is drawing closer scrutiny. YouTube — the world’s most-visited video site, owned by one of the most powerful and influential corporations in America — played a crucial role in helping build and expand RT, an organization that the American intelligence community has described as the Kremlin’s “principal international propaganda outlet” and a key player in Russia’s information warfare operations around the world. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/23/technology/youtube-russia-rt.html 1/6 10/24/2017 Russia’s Favored Outlet Is an Online News Giant. YouTube Helped. - The New York Times While Kremlin-aligned agents secretly built fake Facebook groups to foment political division and deployed hordes of Twitter bots to stoke criticism of Hillary Clinton, RT worked out in the open, bolstered by one of the largest online audiences of any news organization in the world and a prominent presence on YouTube’s search results.
