River Teme Bridge Reconstruction, Ludlow, Shropshire River Teme Bridge Reconstruction, Ludlow, Shropshire Client Balfour Beatty for Network Rail Project The reconstruction of the 1853 River Teme under-line bridge was made necessary by the extent of Description defects to the original cast iron spandrel arch superstructure including corrosion and some cracking which had been partially addressed by emergency holding repairs. A speed restriction had been imposed and the project was undertaken as a matter of expediency with crucial design decisions made early to enable rapid progress. A new bridge deck using Network Rail’s Standard Trapezoidal Box Girder Design was chosen so that steelwork procurement could proceed and a decision to construct new foundations meant that the design could progress without reliance on the unproven capacity of the existing abutments.     HABITAT RESTORATION AT POWICK WEIR – A CASE STUDY IN SAVING KING HENRY III’S FAVOURITE FISH Dr Peter Brunner Royal HaskoningDHV April / May 2019 RRC 20th Annual Conference, Liverpool Background • So what was King Henry III`s favourite fish? • The Shad (Twaite & Allis) was the staple food in the 13th- century court of King Henry III, and was preferred over Atlantic salmon (Shad the fish of Kings and Queens). • Prior to mid-19th Century, Twaite shad (Alosa Fallax) was an economically important in the Severn River Basin. • Up to two thirds of all fish caught in the Severn Estuary and River Severn were Twaite shad. • However, Twaite shad populations in the River Severn and its major tributary the River Teme, have drastically reduced since the mid-1800`s, in response to the construction of weirs and navigation locks preventing access to upstream spawning habitat. Background • The Bristol Channel (Severn Estuary) holds the only viable breeding population of Twaite shad in the UK. • The River Severn is one of only four rivers in the UK known to support spawning Twaite shad. • Because of the decline in Twaite shad, they are a notified species within the Severn Estuary SAC and River Teme SSSI. Objectives • Unlocking the Severn Project being funded by HLF and LIFE UK, aims to significantly improve access to quality spawning and nursery habitat for the Twaite shad; and • Re-establish 253 km of its former natural range in the River Severn and River Teme. • The overall project is being delivered by the Environment Agency in partnership with the Severn Rivers Trust (SRT), Canal and Rivers Trust (CaRT), Natural England (NE).

    ST Classification: OFFICIAL COMMERCIAL Creating bathing rivers Business case 01 Severn Trent 29 January 2021 ST Classification: OFFICIAL COMMERCIAL Executive summary Clean, healthy rivers have the potential to support ecosystems, biodiversity, communities, health and wellbeing, and local as well as national economies. Currently, this potential is largely untapped, the UK has no bathing quality rivers and lags behind other European countries in unlocking the wider benefits of its rivers. The current approach to improving river quality is not working. The sector has invested £25 bn in wastewater quality since privatization. While we have made significant improvements in water quality from our river discharges, only 14% of rivers meet good ecological status. As one of many contributors to river water quality it is clear it remains a huge challenge to meet the ambition in the Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan, of 75% of rivers being close to their natural state. At the current cost and pace the ambition appears both unaffordable and unachievable. Defra and the Environment Agency are grasping this challenge as we work together to reform the way the environmental programme is defined. We see an opportunity to create a blueprint for how we can initiate a step-change from delivering environmental outputs for our rivers. Where previously we would tackle sector specific legislative drivers through isolated programmes of work, we want to move to delivering tangible and catchment based environmental outcomes. We are proposing to drive an outcome based step change for two sections of river by considering the current and future risks that could prevent it from returning to its natural state and addressing them in a way that provides tangible benefits and proactively responds to the increasing expectations of our customers and communities.

Minerals development usually takes place on previously undeveloped land and can therefore result in permanent change to the natural environment and green spaces in Worcestershire. The impacts of both the working and the restoration of mineral sites need to be considered in detail in the development of the Worcestershire Minerals Local Plan (the MLP). 1.2. The Council will take a 'green infrastructure' (GI) approach to considering these impacts. The GI approach is a different way of thinking about the green spaces in Worcestershire. It moves beyond solely considering the environmental benefits of green spaces and integrates the consideration of economic, health and social benefits in the planning and management of green spaces. Rather than considering each green space in isolation it looks at the ways in which individual sites and corridors of green space collectively form the distinctive character of Worcestershire that attracts both visitors and business to the County. 1.3. The components of GI include biodiversity, landscape, historic environment, access and recreation and water (also know as blue infrastructure). The GI approach requires thinking about the environment as an integrated system of stepping stones or nodes in a wider network1. Green infrastructure and mineral workings and restoration 1.4. There is significant potential for mineral workings to destroy existing networks of green infrastructure if the nature and character of these networks is not taken into account. However there is also significant potential to contribute positively to green infrastructure through the restoration of mineral workings.
