William Halbrook Crary was a prospector and newspaper man born in the 1870s (may be 1873 or 1876). William and his brother Carl N. Crary came to Valdez in 1898. Will was a member of the prospecting party of the Arctic Mining Company; Carl was the captain of the association. The Company staked the “California Placer Claim” on Slate Creek and worked outside of Valdez on the claim. Slate Creek is a tributary of the Chitina River, in the Chistochina District of the Copper River Basin. Will Crary was the first townsite trustee for Valdez. Carl later worked in the pharmaceutical field in Valdez and was also the postmaster. Will married schoolteacher Nan Fitch in Valdez in 1906. Carl died of cancer in 1927 in Portland, Oregon. -

U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Public Use Summary Arctic National Wildlife Refuge April 2010 Arctic National Wildlife Refuge 907/456-0250 800/362-4546 [email protected] http://arctic.fws.gov/ Report Highlights: This report contains a summary of historic visitor use information compiled for the area now designated within the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge boundary (up to 1997); depicts a general index of recent visitor use patterns (1998-2009) based upon available data; summarizes available harvest data for general hunting and trapping; and discusses current trends in public use with implications for future management practices. Recent visitor use patterns include: Visitation has generally remained steady since the late 1980s, averaging around 1000 visitors, yet at the same time there has been a steady increase in the number of commercial permits issued. The Dalton Highway serves as a significant access corridor to the Refuge. The highway passes less than a mile from Atigun Gorge, which has experienced a steady increase in visitation. The majority of visitors float rivers, while hiking/backpacking and hunting comprise other major user activities. Across activity types, more than half of the commercially-supported visitation is guided. On average, where locations are known, about 77% of overall commercially-supported visitation occurs north of the Brooks Range, while about 23% occurs on the south side. Nearly one-quarter (21%) of the commercially-supported visitors to the Refuge visit the Kongakut River drainage on the north side of the Brooks Range. Commercially guided or transported recreational visitors spend, on average, about nine days in the Refuge, in groups that average around five individuals. -

GLENNALLEN AREA BOUNDARIES: WEST: From the Northwest corner boundary begins at Island Lake… approximately 3 miles south of the southern tip of the Island Lake, the boundary follows the Tolsona Creek. It follows the creek across the Glenn Highway to the Tazlina River. GOING EAST. From the South Western corner, the boundary follows the Tazlina River… it crosses Moose Creek and travels directly East from Moose Creek to the bottom of Simpson hill. (It does not follow the Tazlina River once it intersects with Moose Creek. The boundary curves alongside the mountain ending at the Richardson Highway at the bottom of Simpson hill (south)) The boundary does not include what used to be called the Tazlina Trailer court. Heading North: From the Bottom of Simpson Hill, the boundary includes the west side of the Richardson Highway until the top of Simpson Hill. At the top of Simpson Hill, the boundary then becomes the Copper River. It follows the Copper River until Dry Creek. It follows Dry Creek as it winds its way Northwest until it crosses with the Richardson Highway. Once it crosses the Richardson Highway it follows the Creek until 22 Alaska Pipeline road. This boundary stops at the end of the APL 22 road. Heading South: The boundary heads directly south from the end of the APL 22 road (Approximately 2.5 miles) This path is the path of the pipeline. At approximately 1 mile north of the Glenn Highway the boundary then goes in a perpendicular line (WEST) until it hits Moose Creek. HEADING NORTHWEST: The border then moves in a Northwest line as it follows Moose Creek all the way to Tolsona Lake. -

Dwight1,2 and David M. Cairns1 (Received 2 February 2018; accepted in revised form 22 May 2018) ABSTRACT. The Arctic tundra is undergoing many environmental changes in addition to increasing temperatures: these changes include permafrost degradation and increased shrubification. Disturbances related to infrastructure can also lead to similar environmental changes. The Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) is an example of infrastructure that has made a major imprint on the Alaskan landscape. This paper assesses changes in shrub presence along the northernmost 255 km of the TAPS. We used historical satellite imagery from before construction of the TAPS in 1974 and contemporary satellite imagery from 2010 to 2016 to examine changes in shrub presence over time. We found a 51.8% increase in shrub presence adjacent to the pipeline compared to 2.6% in control areas. Additionally, shrub presence has increased significantly more in areas where the pipeline is buried, indicating that the disturbances linked to pipeline burial have likely created favorable conditions for shrub colonization. These results are important for predicting potential responses of tundra vegetation to disturbance, which will be crucial to forecasting the future of Arctic tundra vegetation. Arctic National Wildlife Refuge Summary of Activities

October 2020 Arctic National Wildlife Refuge 907-456-0250, 800-362-4546 [email protected], http://arctic.fws.gov Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic Beginning in early March 2020, Arctic Refuge staff began working from home to protect both themselves as well as Arctic Refuge communities from the spread of the COVID-19 disease. Many planned projects, events and activities had to be postponed, cancelled, or held virtually. By the summer months, the US Fish and Wildlife Service in Alaska had established safety guidelines allowing some limited field work to proceed while adhering to strict protocol for COVID-19 safety. The refuge continues to plan and conduct important surveys and field work within established safety guidelines. Refuge Staffing Changes: In May of 2020, Maria Berkeland was hired at Arctic NWR as the Permits specialist. Her primary role is the administration of special use permits for all permit types including scientific research and commercial activities such as air taxi, hunting guide, recreational guide and commercial film. Tim Knudson was hired full-time in August 2020 as the Oil and Gas logistics coordinator. Tim’s duties include coordination of logistical needs associated with the Arctic Coastal Plain research and monitoring needs. Sara Wolman transferred to Arctic NWR from Alaska Peninsula/Becharof NWR in King Salmon as an Outreach/Visual Information Specialist. Sara assists with digital media support as well as other visitor services and outreach functions for the Refuge. She developed the Refuge’s 60th Anniversary logo highlighted later in this report.
