LETTER FROM INGLESIDE We rejoice in the fact that Ingleside has created community and is a great place to live, work, and give! People are what make Ingleside an exceptional community; specifically, the compassion, experience, and generosity of Ingleside residents, clients, staff, volunteer board members, family, friends, and donors!

Since our founding in 1906, Ingleside’s not-for-profit mission has made an impact in the lives of older adults, their families, and staff. In 2019, Ingleside communities and affiliates continued to evolve to meet the needs of our current and future residents and clients with the opening of innovative new independent living residences, Centers for Healthy Living, and health services programs and spaces.

In 2019, the “Ingleside 2020 and Beyond” strategic plan was approved, aligning Ingleside’s vision, mission, values, and goals. It employed an inclusive process that included our volunteer Boards of Directors, residents, and staff. The plan focused on four priorities; enhancing culture and attracting and retaining great people; continuing to optimize healthcare service delivery; partnerships; and philanthropy.

Great team members are integral to the Ingleside family. In 2019, Ingleside was certified as a Great Place to Work, reaffirming Ingleside’s commitment to our employees. Moving forward, it is also vital to continue to optimize Ingleside’s healthcare service delivery to meet evolving changes in resident and client preferences.

We are thankful for the generosity of our donors and Westminster Ingleside Foundation’s mission, which in 2019 provided resident support, improved the quality of our residents’ and their families’ lives, and continued to build an endowment for the future.

We are grateful for our Ingleside family. Our bright future is ensured through your commitment, generosity, and perseverance. Your selfless actions continue to make Ingleside a community of extraordinary people, and a great place to live, work, and give.

Onward and upward with gratitude.

LETTER FROM THE WESTMINSTER INGLESIDE FOUNDATION

The Westminster Ingleside Foundation (WIF) represents more than 100 years of service and tradition, and has been an integral part of the Ingleside family. The funds we raise together directly serve our community, helping residents whose personal resources can no longer cover their cost of living, and assist with special projects and programs that serve the broader needs of our three life plan communities.

We had a remarkably special year in 2019 for many reasons. You helped us raise a record-breaking $5.6 million in gifts and, together with positive returns obtained on its investments, the Foundation’s assets have grown to over $15 million. Ingleside at Rock Creek received its largest gift in its history, a $3.1 million bequest from former resident Ruth Brown. Gifts like this designated for our Resident Supporting Fund aid us in continuing to serve residents who have outlived their resources through no fault of their own.

Beyond giving to the Resident Supporting Funds, donors continued to make numerous gifts to programs and services that enrich life in each Ingleside community, and support our wonderful and dedicated employees in fostering their educational goals. Gifts were made to benefit Ingleside arts, music, landscaping and beautification, and spiritual life. Unrestricted gifts to the Foundation were made to help further the missions of the Foundation and Ingleside.

We are grateful to all our donors! You are the spark that gives us inspiration and we’re excited for the chance to further Ingleside’s mission for those we serve today, and those we will serve in the future. It is our hope that you enjoy this report to see stories of philanthropy in action.

A GENEROUS GIFT FOR THOSE IN NEED

Ruth Brown had a passion for helping others, and she is continuing that legacy after her death with a significant donation. Ruth left the largest gift in the history of the Westminster Ingleside Foundation (WIF) in 2019 through her will. The $3.1 million gift was directed to benefit the Ingleside at Rock Creek Resident Supporting Fund and will ensure that the community can care for those who have outlived their resources and need financial assistance.

Born in 1932, Ruth grew up in Zebulon, North Carolina, graduating from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill with a Master’s degree in Political Science. After she earned her degree, Ruth was recruited by the CIA to work for the Foreign Broadcast Information Service, which took her around the globe. Ruth monitored, recorded, transcribed, and translated intercepted radio broadcasts from foreign governments, official news services, and clandestine broadcasts from occupied territories in areas including London, Vienna, Cyprus, and Okinawa.

She kept that sense of adventure in her personal life as well. In her down time, Ruth enjoyed exploring new countries, visiting the Kennedy Center and playing golf at Copeland Spring in West Virginia. Her friends at Ingleside at Rock Creek (IRC) remembered her love for dogs and that she enjoyed using the fitness center and spending time with her fellow residents.

Planned gifts like Ruth’s are one of the most important sources of funding programs and improvements that benefit all IRC residents. The generous bequest from Ruth will serve residents in their times of need for years to come, and we forever thank Ruth Brown for making this gift to our community.

Many people like to leave a gift to a charity in their wills as a lasting statement of the important values in their lives. This is a great option for donors who desire to have full control of their assets during their lifetimes while supporting causes that are important in their lives. More information and assistance is available through the Westminster Ingleside Foundation, including a planned giving calculator and appropriate forms.

FEEDING THOSE WHO NEED IT MOST

Krishna Roy, 91, spends every Monday putting together donations from Ingleside at Rock Creek (IRC) residents to send, together with lunches, to those who might not have a lunch otherwise or a change of clothes or shoes. About 12 years ago, Krishna and other residents at IRC started partnering with So Others Might Eat (S.O.M.E.), a nonprofit that works to fight poverty and homelessness in the D.C. area. Every Monday, about 12 to 15 residents gather to make 75 lunch bags for the organization with items donated by the dining room at IRC.

But Krishna and the volunteers at IRC don’t stop there. They also put together donations of clothing, footwear and household goods for the homeless from S.O.M.E. “It’s a great way to keep everyone busy, but they’re all so grateful to know that they are doing something that is good, needed and critical,” Krishna said.

She worked for the United Nations for more than 25 years and was excited when she retired that she had more time for volunteering in the community. 1 Also, in partnering with the Kuehner House, a housing facility for low or no- income seniors in DC run by S.O.M.E., IRC has a monthly program that brings the two communities together. Once a month 2-3 IRC residents lead a crafts workshop for 10-12 residents of Kuehner House in their Community Room. On alternate months, 16 Kuehner House Senior Center participants come to IRC for lunch and a program which may include walks, games, crafts, a movie, or a sing-along.

IRC resident Bunty Ketcham, one of the founders of the IRC/Kuehner House partnership, says everyone enjoys the monthly visits either in Anacostia or at 2 IRC. “They know that these are people that they’d never meet otherwise, and I think that it’s sort of a win-win for everyone involved,” Bunty said. “People very much enjoy it. I know I do.”

Krishna said that she hopes to continue to expand IRC’s partnership with S.O.M.E. because of how successful it is, not only in the amount of people served, but also in the richness of the connections and friendships that are made between seniors in the DC area. “I’m looking forward to continuing the program and hopefully giving back to more seniors and making more connections in the community,” Krishna said.

CONTINUING A LEGACY OF SERVICE

Beloved residents Thompson and Nancy Buchanan have been donors and supporters of Ingleside at Rock Creek (IRC) since they moved into the community in 2001. They wanted their legacy of volunteering and donating to continue for the community they loved. The Buchanans supported their neighbors through their gifts to the IRC Resident Supporting Fund and gave support to improve the ravine, which is considered by many a signature feature of the community.

They expressed their interest in contributing their refundable entry fee to their future estate gift but were unable to execute their gift in writing before their health declined. Their children, Barbara and Campbell, however, said their parents expressed their desire to make this gift. They made the “easy decision” to give back to the IRC community for their parents. Barbara said the decision to give back the refundable entrance fee was the right thing to do because “Ingleside at Rock Creek was able to help extend and enrich the lives” of her parents. 4

“INGLESIDE AT ROCK CREEK WAS ABLE TO HELP EXTEND AND ENRICH THE LIVES” OF HER PARENTS.

The gift was divided into five different areas to benefit Ingleside: the Ravine “Buchanan’s Brae”; Music Therapy in the Health Center; Staff Recognition Training, and Development; Dog Visitation Program in Health Care; and

5 a Discretionary Fund for the Executive Director to meet special needs at Ingleside. The close relationships that the Buchanans had with their friends at IRC, as well as the activities and volunteer opportunities, enriched and fulfilled their later lives, Barbara said.

Ingleside is grateful for the Buchanans’ life of service to Ingleside and their lasting legacy to benefit everyone who is served.

MAKING THE ENVIRONMENT A BRIGHTER PLACE

Larry and Jeanette Heath have lived in Westminster at Lake Ridge (WLR) for five years and are keeping busy helping with environmental projects in the community. Larry, 74, is a retired internal medicine doctor and was excited about shifting gears and getting in on conservation projects at WLR.

Larry is the chairman of the landscape committee, and he and his wife Jeanette have helped with a shared community landscaping project that included the addition of 460 plants and bushes to a specified area of the community, as well as projects to help with stormwater runoff in the area. Larry coordinated assistance from the Prince William County Master Gardener Program, the Virginia Cooperative Extension Program through Virginia Tech, the Encore Shop, and many resident volunteers at WLR to install a rain garden and stormwater conveyance system to mitigate the speed and volume of water going into one of the two iconic ponds on campus.

“I’ve always been interested in trees and plants and being outside, so it was

7 great to get involved in the conservation side of things,” Larry said. For the past four years, Larry has also been in charge of the monthly Men’s Breakfast, which brings in interesting speakers to present on different topics. He notes that while it is a “Men’s” Breakfast, all are invited to attend.

When she’s not helping Larry with environmental projects on campus, Jeanette is incredibly involved in serving on local boards and committees. “We both kind of follow our heart about whatever we feel passionate or moved by,” Jeanette said. She was elected to the Resident Council at Westminster at Lake Ridge in 2016 and served as president from 2017 to 2018. She still serves on steering committees and recently served on the Executive Director Search Committee. She also volunteers with The Encore Shop, and is part of the tutoring program with Rockledge Elementary.

Both Larry and Jeanette have also served as election officers for several years, working the polls every election and continuing to do so since moving to WLR. Jeanette has volunteered as an election officer for more than 20 years and Larry for about 12. “Volunteering and serving comes naturally for us,” Jeanette said. “It has always been like that. It keeps you engaged.”

Another initiative at the community that the Heaths help with is the WLR Earth Day Fund. Money collected goes toward planting trees throughout the campus. When they’re not volunteering, Larry and Jeanette enjoy playing pickleball, traveling, and walking at least 6 miles each day. While they mostly walk for exercise, picking up trash is a normal part of this activity. Their disposal and/ or recycling of items helps to keep WLR and surrounding areas beautiful.

IF YOU ARE ABLE, HELP OTHERS: GIVING BACK TO THOSE IN NEED

Greta Davidson, 87, has lived at Westminster at Lake Ridge (WLR) for more than six years and decided it was time for a gift to those who need it most. When she heard that the WLR Resident Supporting Fund needed money, Greta decided to gift a portion of her refundable entry fee. “I learned from both of my parents that if you are able, help others in life, and this is one way I could help out,” Greta said. Greta established a Charitable Gift Life Income Agreement with the Westminster Ingleside Foundation. Through this gift, Greta not only helped other residents but also qualified for an immediate income tax deduction and receives fixed income for life.

Greta was born in Oslo, Norway, and has lived in Illinois, Alabama, Tennessee and Virginia. She enjoys knitting, playing cards, and spending time with her friends in the community. She says that one of her most memorable experiences is when she became a U.S. citizen. She says that she is thankful every day that she found WLR. “I like the friendliness here. There are a lot of nice people and everyone is so caring. It’s like a second family,” Greta said. 9 Throughout Ingleside’s 114-year history, not a single resident has been asked to leave an Ingleside community due to financial hardship through no fault of their own. These efforts have been possible due to the generous support of donors to Westminster Ingleside Foundation. The Resident Supporting Fund covers not only all residential fees, but also other fees such as medical care and transportation. The RSF assistance is especially important for those living in independent or assisted living where government-funded subsidies are limited or nonexistent.

The last 10 people who have received assistance in the Ingleside family of communities from the Resident Supporting Fund had an average age of 87 and had lived at the community for an average of nine years before needing financial help. The assistance lasts for an average of two and a half years and includes an average of $45,378 for each resident.

“I hope that this gift will go to people that have run out of money. This is just a little way I can help them and keep them from having to move out of this wonderful place,” Greta said.

2019 INGLESIDE ANNUAL REPORT | PAGE 11 INGLESIDE AT KING FARM ‘OPERATION GRATITUDE’ GIVES RESIDENTS THE CHANCE TO THANK THOSE WHO SERVE

For Memorial Day in 2019, a table of cards and pens placed outside the cafe at Ingleside at King Farm (IKF) held special meaning. Debbie Loube, Director of Community Engagement for Ingleside at King Farm, says that they wanted to try a volunteer opportunity that anyone could participate in without having to travel too far from their residences. “I thought it would be nice for us to do something interactive with current military,” Debbie said.

Through Operation Gratitude, a national nonprofit on a mission to thank every American who serves the country, Debbie advertised the program in the community’s weekly newsletter stating that there would be a station with notecards, pens, and a box in which to put their letters. Residents were encouraged to write more than just the words “thank you” in their letters and instead to tell more about themselves. “The most interesting notes are about yourself,” Debbie said. “Something that shares about you serving or your family serving. Or, if you don’t have any military experience, share about your love of art or your family or something that they might find interesting.” 10 She said the results were incredible. Over the period of seven to 10 days, residents wrote more than 100 notes showing their appreciation for the nation’s military. “For me it made me proud of our residents,” Debbie said. “They put a lot of thoughtfulness behind what they do. It just reaffirms what I know about them. They’re very thoughtful and they take volunteering very seriously. They appreciate what they have, and they value the people serving them and keeping them safe.”

Dorothy Welsh, 77, has lived at IKF for about two years and said she was grateful for the opportunity to write notes and show her appreciation for the military. “I have high regard for them because they choose to commit to something bigger than themselves. They are willing to put their lives on the line,” Dorothy said. “They’ve made a significant commitment.”

Dorothy said she spends a lot of her time helping her husband with Parkinson’s Disease, so she really welcomed the opportunity to volunteer without having to leave him. “We’re limited now in our aging process, and this made giving back very easy,” Dorothy said. “We were given the opportunity to write these notes as we walked by and it was a nice opportunity for IKF. There is such an amazing giving spirit here and a very positive environment.”

Maria Barahona, 51, has worked in housekeeping at Ingleside at King Farm (IKF) for more than four years. “I feel at home here,” Maria said. “I love everything about it.” She is studying to take her citizenship test and recently was awarded money from the Ingleside at King Farm Employee Scholarship Endowment Fund to help offset the cost of the process. Maria has a husband and three children and says she is excited for the opportunity to learn, grow, and become a U.S. citizen.

“The people here are so nice and they treat the employees like family because we spend a lot of time with them,” Maria said. Her goal is to apply for a Certified Nursing Assistant program and advance her career at IKF. She said she would love to stay working in the community.

The scholarship fund is available to active benefit-eligible employees who have been continuously employed for at least six months. The funds are to provide financial assistance to current employees who show a commitment to the community and serve as positive role models. Employees can use the 12 scholarship for supplemental eligible expenses including tuition, conferences and seminars, book and course materials, initial licensure, certification testing and U.S. citizenship application expenses.

TO DATE, $23,715 HAS BEEN AWARDED TO INGLESIDE AT KING FARM EMPLOYEES

The Ingleside at King Farm Employee Scholarship Endowment Fund was made possible by several generous IKF resident donations.
