Stour House Originally built in about 1735, with a later wing added at the rear of the house in the early 19th Century, Stour House is a charming and unspoilt Grade II Listed townhouse built of mellow red brick under a clay tiled roof. It has large and well-proportioned accommodation, which is light and airy with excellent head height and there is a wealth of original period features throughout the house. These include tall sash windows, fireplaces, coving, panelling and window seats. On the ground floor the reception hall has a sweeping and impressive 18th Century staircase rising up to the first floor and doors leading to the study, cloakroom, dining room and drawing room, which is a well proportioned room with a beautiful, broad bow window overlooking the garden. Beyond the hall is a short rear hall with a secondary staircase to the first floor and steps down to a suite of 4 cellar rooms. A further door opens to the kitchen/breakfast room, which is fitted with a range of units and gas-fired AGA (cream) and has a small sitting room to one side. Beyond the kitchen is the laundry room with steps leading down to the garden room, which has four pairs of arched French windows opening out to the garden. On the first floor is a broad landing with doors off to the principal bedroom with en-suite bathroom and dressing room, two further large double bedrooms, bathroom and a small bedroom, which is currently used as a study. On the second floor are two further double bedrooms off a central landing. Outbuildings, Gardens & Grounds Electrically-operated gates to on one side of the house open onto a gravelled parking area beside a period outbuilding, now forming a large single garage with workshop, storeroom and WC to one side, with a loft above. The beautiful garden lies entirely behind the house and is fan-shaped, with high brick walls on both sides running down to the River Stour affording great privacy. The garden consists of a series of broad, tiered lawns leading down to an orchard with river frontage at the far end. A very attractive and unusual timber bridge then leads on to part of a small island. The lawns are bordered on both sides by richly planted shrub and herbaceous borders. Behind one border is a delightful orchard garden and behind the other is a vegetable and soft fruit garden beside a brick- built former coach house. In all the gardens extend to about 1.3 acres (0.52 hectare). Situation & Amenities Stour House is situated on the principal street running through the centre of the historic Georgian town of Blandford Forum. The town has a good variety of independent shops, boutique cafés, restaurants and public houses surrounding an attractive market place. There are some exceptional schools E in the area including Bryanston, which is conveniently located on the edge of the town, Milton Abbey, Port Regis in Motcombe, St Mary’s in Shaftesbury, the Sherborne schools, Leweston, Hazlegrove and Canford. Within easy reach are the larger towns S of Poole (14½ miles), Dorchester (18 miles), Bournemouth (19 miles) and Salisbury (24 miles), which all offer a comprehensive selection of shopping, business and recreational facilities. There are numerous sporting activities in the G area, including golf locally in Blandford Forum and Dorchester as well as walking and cycling in nearby Cranborne Chase and the Isle of Purbeck. The Dorset coast offers a good range of water sports and there are many fi ne beaches at Bournemouth, Poole and Studland. There are a number of gastro pubs and e restaurants within the local area. The A31 is about 8 miles to the south, accessing M London via the M27 and M3 and Exeter, and the West Country via the A35 and A303. There are train stations at Poole (14¾ miles) T and Salisbury (24 miles), which have main line services to London Waterloo taking about 2 hours and 1½ hours respectively. Bournemouth Airport (19 miles) and A Southampton Airport (43 miles) both offer connections within the UK and to many international destinations. Services: Mains water, electricity, drainage and gas. The Council is aware of the various consultation events held within the local community to identify issues and draw conclusions, and in this context seeks to provide constructive comments on the finalisation of the Plan. For ease of reference, comments are set out according to the policies of the submission version of the neighbourhood plan. Some comments may cover more than one topic and should be seen in this context. The comments made in this response should not be seen as exhaustive and the officers continue to encourage an on-going dialogue with the Neighbourhood Plan Group and the Qualifying Body. Le Bas 2020 7.12 BLANDFORD PREPARES FOR WAR With war looming in 1939, Blandford Camp was reactivated a s a t r a i n i n g c e n t r e f o r reservists called up, and for new r e c r u i t s s e e n here. Many new huts were built for accommodation, as most of the huts from WW1 had long since been demolished or sold on. Some became the huts for the Blandford Scouts in Eagle House Gardens. INVASION? In 1940, Blandford received prominence when Prime Minister Churchill declared Blandford must become 'a strategic tank island to be defended at all costs'. This was in response to the threat of German invasion after the Fall of France in May. The German plan, one of many, was to land in August 1940 on the Dorset Coast “Operation Sealion”, and strike northward rapidly to the Bristol Channel, thereby capturing Blandford featured strongly in the German at a stroke the ports of Devon and plans. It lay on one of three routes the German Cornwall and enabling the landing Army would have taken, the others being of German forces unopposed.
