ELECTION RETURNS HISTORICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES On election night, ballots are counted and turned into the state for preliminary reporting. However, the results are not official until a verification board—consisting of bipartisan election judges—convenes in each county or independent city to validate the returns. After the board completes its work, all election results are then considered official, barring a recount. According to the Missouri Revised Statutes (Section 115.507): “Not later than the second Tuesday after the election, the verification board shall issue a statement announcing the results of each election held within its jurisdiction and shall certify the returns to each political subdivision and special district submitting a candidate or question at the election.” Election returns are collated by county (or independent city) for all candidates and initiative petitions in primary, general, and special elections in the state of Missouri. Election returns contain the number of regular and absentee votes cast. This abstract of votes is the official election return. For the statewide report of votes cast for each election, see the Board of State Canvassers Reports.
