Received: 2018 November 7; in original from 2018 April 6 ABSTRACT We have initiated a dedicated project to follow-up with ground-based photometry the transiting planets discovered by CoRoT in order to refine the orbital elements, constrain their physical parameters and search for additional bodies in the system. From 2012 September to 2016 December we carried out 16 transit observations of six CoRoT planets (CoRoT-5b, CoRoT-8b, CoRoT-12b, CoRoT-18b, CoRoT-20 b, and CoRoT-27b) at three observatories located in Germany and Spain. These observations took place between 5 and 9 yr after the planet’s discovery, which has allowed us to place stringent constraints on the planetary ephemeris. In five cases we obtained light curves with a deviation of the mid-transit time of up to ∼115 min from the predictions. -

You may have noticed that this newsletter is showing up a little bit later than usual, and it’s for good reason: release of the newsletter will now happen after the monthly business meeting so that we can have a chance to keep everybody up to date on the latest information. Sometimes, this will mean the newsletter shows up a couple of days late. But, the upshot is that you’ll now be able to see what we discussed at the recent business meeting and have time to digest it before our general meeting in case you want to give some feedback. Now that we’re on the new format, business meetings (and the oft neglected Light Pollution Committee Meeting), are going to start being open to all members of the club again by simply joining up in the respective chat rooms the Wednesday before the first Monday of the month—which I encourage people to do, especially if you have some ideas you want to see the club put into action. -

Das Orakel von Delphi prophezeite ihm, sein Enkelsohn werde ihn einst töten. Aus Furcht vor diesem Orakelspruch ließ Akrisios seine Tochter Danae in einen Turm einschließen, damit sie keinen Mann empfangen könne. Akrisios konnte natürlich nicht wissen, dass Zeus selbst sich der liebreizenden Danae nähern wollte. Zeus tat dies auch und nahm dazu die Form eines goldenen Regens an, der durch die Wände, Fugen, Ritzen und Fenster drang. Danae gebar einen Sohn, welcher "Der aus fließendem Gold entstandene" oder auch "Der Goldgeborene" genannt wurde - eben den Perseus. Akrisios blieb dies natürlich nicht lange verborgen und er ließ seine Tochter und sein Enkelkind in einen Kasten einnageln, der dann ins Meer geworfen wurde. Danae und Perseus trieben lange Zeit auf dem Meer, bis sie schließlich an der Küste der steinigen Insel Seriphos strandeten und aus ihrem Gefängnis befreit wurden. Auf dieser Insel herrschte Polydektes, der bald jahrelang um die schöne Danae warb, jedoch vergebens. Entweder um Danae doch noch zur Ehe zu zwingen oder um Perseus aus dem Weg zu schaffen, schickte er den inzwischen zum Jüngling herangewachsenen Sohn der Danae aus, eine tödliche Aufgabe zu erledigen. Er solle das Haupt der Medusa zu holen. Die Medusa war eine der Gorgonen, eine der drei Töchter des Phorkys, die mit Schlangenhaaren ausgestattet waren und einen versteinernden Blick werfen konnten. -

Next Meeting Thursday, February 18th Cosmic Castaways (Planetarium Show) What happens when galaxies collide? What becomes of the stars within those galaxies? This full-dome program explores these ques- tions and ponders the fate of our own Sun and solar system when the Milky Way galaxy and the Andromeda galaxy collide in the distant future. The Science Factory has graciously offered to give us a free plan- etarium show in thanks for our support over the last year. Cosmic Cast- aways is an engrossing look at a process that nearly every galaxy will eventually go through. We see colliding galaxies everywhere we look, and our distant descendants will watch a collision close-up. What will their fate likely be? Come see for yourself. At our meetings we also encourage people to bring any new gear or projects they would like to show the rest of the club. The meeting is at 7:00 on Thursday, February 18th at the Science Factory. Come a little early to visit and get a seat before the program starts.
