    RABBI’S MESSAGE From Purim to Pesach and Back The Hebrew calendar gives us a double blessing in the months of Adar and Nissan, with the holidays of Purim and Passover coming back-to-back. These celebrations are very different from each other, and yet the progression of one to the other on the calendar can give interesting ideas to explore. Both deal with bitter enemies and the possibility of genocidal extinction. The Purim villain, Haman, manipulates the Persian king into decreeing legalized murder of the Jewish people. Haman’s plan fails and the Jews retaliate. The Passover villain, Pharaoh, also threatens extinction by murdering Jewish baby boys at birth. This plan also fails, and the Israelites are redeemed by G-D’s “mighty hand and outstretched arm” to escape into the wilderness and eventually the Promised Land. From the 15th of Adar to the 15th of Nissan, the score is: Jews 2, Evil 0. Yes, both Purim and Pesach fulfill the traditional theme about Jewish holidays: “They tried to kill us. We survived. Let’s eat.” The survival elements and food are certainly part of our contemporary celebrations for both holidays. The threats occur differently, and so do our observances. While Passover precedes Purim chronologically, Purim precedes Passover on the calendar. I’ve often considered the various ways these two springtime festivals differ as ways to look at the growth of our people. In the Book of Esther, the name of God is not mentioned. In the traditional Passover Haggadah, the name of Moses is not mentioned. We are taught that Moses’ name was left out of the Haggadah for fear of deifying Moses.

    1 Davidson College Presbyterian Church Davidson, North Carolina Scott Kenefake, Interim Senior Pastor “The Last Week” Palm Sunday March 25, 2018 Introduction Two processions entered Jerusalem on a spring day in the year 30. It was the beginning of the week of Passover, the most sacred week of the Jewish year. One was a peasant procession, the other an imperial procession. From the east, Jesus rode a donkey down the Mount of Olives, cheered by his followers. Jesus was from the peasant village of Nazareth, his message was about the kingdom of God, and his followers came from the peasant class. They had journeyed to Jerusalem from Galilee, about a hundred miles to the north. On the opposite side of the city, from the west, Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of Idumea, Judea, and Samaria, entered Jerusalem at the head of a column of imperial cavalry and soldiers. Jesus’s procession proclaimed the kingdom of God; Pilate’s proclaimed the power of empire. The two processions embody the central conflict of the week that led to Jesus’s crucifixion. Pilate’s military procession was a demonstration of both Roman Imperial power—imagine cavalry on horses, foot soldiers, leather armor, helmets, weapons, banners, golden eagles mounted on poles, sun glinting on metal and gold. Sounds: the marching of feet, the creaking of leather, and the clinking of bridles, the beating of drums. The swirl of dust. The eyes of the silent onlookers, some curious, some awed, some resentful--and Roman Imperial Theology—they called Caesar (in this case Tiberius) “son of God,” “lord,” and “savior.” Inscriptions refer to him as … one who had brought “peace on earth.” Though unfamiliar to most people today, the imperial procession was well known in the Jewish homeland in the first century …, for it was the standard practice of the Roman governors of Judea to be in Jerusalem for the major Jewish festivals.

    Christmas Eve, New Years Eve, All Saints Eve. I bet you recognize the first two, but not the last. Perhaps because it is not commonly called All Saints Eve, but Halloween; which means the Eve of All Hallows, or of All Saints Just as Christmas Eve has absolutely no meaning whatsoever without Christmas, and New Years Eve is only a means of ushering in the New Year, so too, Halloween in and of itself is meaningless without the celebration of All Saints Day, for which it is a preparation. Halloween was originally the Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in), marking the end of summer and the beginning of winter, a time of year that was associated with death. Celts believed on the night of October 31st the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred, and the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. The fears and superstitions of Celtic tribes were evangelized and superseded by the Christian experience of life and death. As the Church celebrated the lives of her Saints and Martyrs on November 1st, Samhain was no longer celebrated as a pagan feast, but as a preparation for All Saints Day. The Church can mock the Devil, and laugh at goblins and demons, because Christ Jesus our Lord has overcome Evil. Protestant countries, following the lead of Martin Luther in the Sixteenth Century, eliminated the celebration of All Saints Day, to give more importance to Jesus Christ. The religious practice of praying to the Saints was considered a man-made invention, detracting from worship of Jesus Christ.

We explore the notion of commemorating in the wider American context, and expand on this to discuss Israel’s Remembrance Day, and what it means to commemorate from a distance. Goals : • The students will grasp the challenge of commemorating the fallen from a geographical and psychological distance. • The students will be challenged to assess the role of a mourner from afar • The students will explore the meaning of being connected to Jews they have never met • The students will explore various ways of moving beyond the obstacle of distance, allowing North American Jewry to connect to Remembrance Day • The students will be challenged to draw closer and connect to the fallen soldiers in Israel, despite the distance • The students will be given the opportunity to design their own program to mark Israel Remembrance Day Outline : Part 1 : Trigger exercise In the first part, students will participate in drama exercise to introduce the theme of the lesson.   • Today Is Tu'bsvat, Which Is Celebrated As the 'New Year of the Trees'
    Tu Bishvat- Planting for the Future Today is Tu’Bsvat, which is traditionally celebrated as the ‘new year of the trees’. In honor of today I would like to share with you a brief thought. In the past century, a custom has emerged that on this day trees are planted, and the Talmud (Taanit 23b) relates a famous story. Choni Ha-Maagal, an early rabbi of the Mishna, used to wonder about the verse in Psalms, “When God will return the captivity of Zion, we will be like dreamers.” How would they be like dreamers? One day he was journeying on the road and he saw a man planting a carob tree; he asked him, “How long does it take for this tree to bear fruit?” The man replied, “Seventy years.” He then further asked him. “Are you certain that you will live another seventy years?” The man responded, “I have found carob trees in the world; as my forefathers planted these for me so I too plant these for my children.” Soon after, Choni ate a meal, and fell into a deep sleep. Like Rip Van Winkle, the Talmud relates that he magically slept for seventy years! He returned to the tree to see a young boy harvesting the Carob. He asked the boy, “Did you plant this tree.” The boy responded that it was his grandfather that did so. How did this event Choni’s life give him insight into the verse? It is not a coincidence that the Talmud mentions that Choni slept for seventy years, and not sixty or eighty.
