  • Hydrometeorological Risk Phenomena in the Alba Iulia – Turda Depression
Hydrometeorological risk phenomena in the Alba iulia – Turda Depression. Romania CĂTĂLINA MĂRCULEŢ1, IOAN MĂRCULEŢ2, 1. Institute of Geography, Bucharest, Romania 2. "I.L. Caragiale" National College, Bucharest, Romania e-mail: [email protected] Abstract In order to assess the vulnerability of communities to extreme hydrometeorological phenomena, observations on their onset and development should aim at quantifying intensity and frequency, also establishing and foreseeing possible damage. The present study focuses on a few atmospheric phenomena registered in the Alba Iulia – Turda Depression over the 2002-2006 interval, given that the damage incurred involved aspects of risk. Hazardous atmospheric phenomena, heavy rainfall in the main, led to other natural risks affecting both the environment and the socio-economic activity. Apart from atmospheric causes, the risk for other natural events are related to local particularities, e.g. lithological structure (sandy-clay substrate), landform (slopes and highly fragmented relief) and soils (little forestland and grassland due to human pressure – dominantly arable land and numerous human settlements). Houses and annexes, as well as socio-economic constructions were damaged, lots of animals and poultry perished, national, county, communal and forester's roads, bridges and foot-bridges were washed away or disaffected, crops were flooded, trees were brought to the ground, electrical and telephone networks were destroyed. Heavily affected were the road infrastructure, the hydroelectrical constructions the socio- economic units, the electrical and telephone networks and agriculture generally. The number of catastrophic situations, unusually high in 2005, represented 44% of all the interventions made over the past ten years to limit and remove flood effects. Negative hydrometeorological phenomena were found to occur mainly in summer, especially in June and July when torrential rains and floods are common.

A mix of desk research, qualitative, and quantitative methods and tools were blended together in this research. An investigation of the wineries’ financial situations and online presence was further completed by the interviews with entrepreneurs, local public administration representatives, and residents in order to establish that business development on the wine-route is highly desired and would eventually enjoy the appreciation of both locals and tourists. Instead of conclusions, a framework for the sustainable development of Alba’s wineries is sketched, focusing on those elements that motivate international and also Romanian wine tourists to visit this destination, and emphasizing the need for the establishment of a destination management organization (DMO) capable of managing the interests of all stakeholders under the conditions of sustainable development.

  • Wine Road - an Instrument for the Valorisation of Wine Tourism Potential Case Study: Alba County Vineyards
Analele Universităţii din Oradea, Seria Geografie Year XXV, no. 2/2015 (December), pp. 195-210 ISSN 1221-1273, E-ISSN 2065-3409 Article no. 252107-683 WINE ROAD - AN INSTRUMENT FOR THE VALORISATION OF WINE TOURISM POTENTIAL CASE STUDY: ALBA COUNTY VINEYARDS Mihaela UNGUREANU University of Oradea, Department of Geography, Tourism and Territorial Planning University St., 410087, Oradea, Romania, e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The main aim of this study is to highlight the wine-growing and wine-making potential of Alba County and the way it can be valorised. Alba county has a rich wine- growing and wine-making heritage, a fact which is due to the long-standing tradition of wine- growing on these area, as well as to the characteristics of the natural factors (relief, geology, climate, soil), favourable for obtaining high-quality wines, the reputation of which has been acquired at national and international competitions. In order to render useful the wine tourism resources, the development of a specific infrastructure is needed, as well as the creation of complex tourist products, able to satisfy a wide range of tourist motivations. An efficient instrument to make productive the wine potential of a region is the „Wine Road" – a tourist trail which includes the tourist attractions of a delimited area, usually with a controlled designation of origin, and also a diverse range of tourist services (transportation, accommodation, catering leisure etc.). In Alba County, the „Wine Road" can be considered as a tourist attraction in itself, but also a means of harnessing the rich cultural-historical and natural heritage and, implicitly, the wine-growing and wine-making heritage.

Traditionally, elemental analysis of vegetation has been facilitated by acid digestion followed by quantification via inductively coupled plasma (ICP) or atomic absorption (AA) spectroscopy. Previous studies have utilized portable X-ray fluorescence (PXRF) spectroscopy to quantify elements in soils, but few have evaluated the vegetation. In this study, a PXRF spectrometer was employed to scan 228 organic material samples (thatch, deciduous leaves, grasses, tree bark, and herbaceous plants) from smelter impacted areas of Romania, as well as NIST certified reference materials, to demonstrate the application of PXRF for elemental determination in vegetation.

  • Ileana Burnichioiu, the Aiud Fortress' “Little
Ileana Burnichioiu , The Aiud Fortress’ “Little Church” in the Sources of the Nineteenth Century This paper deals with one of the medieval churches from Aiud (Nagyenyed, Enyed, Strasßburg/Mieresch), namely with the „little church”, which was demolished by the Lutheran community in 1865-66. This church was located to the north of the „great church” (now belonging to the Reformed cult), which was the parochial church in the sixteenth-seventeenth centuries. The secondary literature of the demolished church contains little and erroneous information. Although field investigations were made in the nineteenth century, their published results have largely been ignored. These texts were published before and after the demolition, in 1858, 1866-1868, and 1874 by Károly Szathmáry, Friedrich Müller, Gustav Seivert, and Rómer Flóris, as well as a drawing by Ödön Nemes. Our aim is to use these texts as sources for offering a better-defined image about the location, architecture, painting, age and the role of the monument. The pieces of information given by these authors suggest that the church was built in the fourteenth century. The building was modest, having a length of 15-18 meters in the area of the existing Lutheran church. It consisted of a rectangular nave, with a three-sided altar, and with buttresses on the corners. In the basement was a crypt filled with bones. The ground floor was a space for cult. Both rooms were vaulted. Later, probably in the fifteenth century, during the construction of the „great church”, the „little” one received a nave on the north side, another room as a sacristy and a tower above the altar.

  • January 8, 1849 and the Genocide of the Hungarians of Nagyenyed What Was Omitted from the History Books
January 8, 1849 and the Genocide of the Hungarians of Nagyenyed What was omitted from the history books. The greatest loss of human life in Nagyenyed happened on January 8, 1849 during the Hungarian Freedom Uprising, when the town was burned more than 800 people died, when the Romanian territorial irregular forces overran the town. It is still an open question today how a peaceful uprising that began in March of 1848 transformed into a bloody, murderous civil war. As is widely known, Law VII of 1848 proclaimed the union of Hungary and Transylvania. The problem arose from the meeting that the Romanians convened between May 15 and 17, 1848, in Balázsfalva (today Blaj, Romania) at which they compiled their own claims: demanded an independent national parliament and set up the Romanian National Committee, which they deemed to be a certain kind of Romanian government in Transylvania. The Transylvanian Romanians allied themselves with the enemy Austrian forces and began to arm against the Hungarians. On hearing this, a flood of Hungarians started out from a number of settlements in Alsó-Fehér County (Comitatul Alba de Jos) towards Nagyenyed (Aiud); the town was filled with refugees, around 4,000 people, of necessity mostly women, children, elderly and the sick crammed into Nagyenyed, since all the able bodied men were away fighting in the armed forces. After losing at the Battle of Pákozd on September 29, 1848, it became clear to the Austrian government that it cannot count on the immediate suppression of the Hungarian uprising. The Vienna government attempted to force the Hungarians into a multi-front war by inciting the Serbs and Romanians.
