The programs stem from a broader worry across the military about the need to bolster professionalism within the officer corps while holding accountable those who abuse their power. The Army plan appears to focus more on building character than berating bad conduct. In recent years, general officers from the one-star to four-star level have violated the military code of conduct they’ve lived under and enforced — often for decades. Some infractions involved extramarital affairs, inappropriate relationships with subordinates or improper use of government funds. “The idea that we’ll be perfect, I think, is unrealistic, but we

  • Study Guide for Band of Brothers – Episode 2: Day of Days
Study Guide for Band of Brothers – Episode 2: Day of Days INTRO: Band of Brothers is a ten-part video series dramatizing the history of one company of American paratroopers in World War Two—E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne, known as “Easy Company.” Although the company’s first experience in real combat did not come until June 1944 ( D-Day), this exemplary group fought in some of the war’s most harrowing battles. Band of Brothers depicts not only the heroism of their exploits but also the extraordinary bond among men formed in the crucible of war. The second episode focuses on the Normandy invasion and Easy Company’s assignment to take out a German artillery installation. On June 6, 1944, thousands of Allied paratroopers dropped from the sky to begin one of the most audacious military campaigns of the war—and one of the most crucial. However, careful planning notwithstanding, most of the members of Easy Company miss their designated drop zones and had to begin the invasion by dealing with their extreme disorientation (heightened for many by the anti-nausea medication the soldiers were instructed to take). With Richard Winters as the company’s commanding officer, Easy Company successfully executes its first assignment in the field, destroying a German artillery installation firing on Allied infantry trying to come ashore. CURRICULUM LINKS: Band of Brothers can be used in history classes. NOTE TO EDUCATORS: Band of Brothers is appropriate as a supplement to units on World War Two, not as a substitute for material providing a more general explanation of the war’s causes, effects, and greater historical significance.

  • Does Self-Reported Posttraumatic Growth Translate Into Friend Ratings of Improvement?
That’s Not What Your Friends Say: Does Self-reported Posttraumatic Growth Translate into Friend Ratings of Improvement? Laura Goorin Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy degree Under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Columbia University 2011 © 2011 Laura Goorin All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT That’s Not What Your Friends Say: Does Self-reported Posttraumatic Growth Translate into Friend Ratings of Improvement? Laura Goorin Posttraumatic growth (PTG) is a prolific construct under study within both trauma and positive psychology literature alike. Many of these studies rely predominantly on cross-sectional, retrospective self-report data. Recent studies have attempted to subject PTG to more rigorous scientific standards of measurement. In this study, we examined posttraumatic growth measured longitudinally among survivors of the September 11 th , 2001 terrorist attack, in order to explore whether participants’ reports of posttraumatic growth were associated with, supported or contradicted by friend ratings of improvement. In this context, participant-reported posttraumatic growth was consistently linked with friend ratings of deteriorating functioning, providing evidence that posttraumatic growth is undermined by friend ratings. These findings suggest that self-reported PTG may inadequately predict functioning as rated by alternative, more objective measures, and that PTG may reflect negative psychological adjustment. Study Guide for Band of Brothers – Episode 6: Bastogne INTRO: Band of Brothers is a ten-part video series dramatizing the history of one company of American paratroopers in World War Two—E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne, known as “Easy Company.” Although the company’s first experience in real combat did not come until June 1944 ( D-Day), this exemplary group fought in some of the war’s most harrowing battles. Band of Brothers depicts not only the heroism of their exploits but also the extraordinary bond among men formed in the crucible of war. In the sixth episode, Easy Company is in the Ardennes Forest, outside of Bastogne, Belgium, trying to defend the Allied line against a German counterattack in December 1944. This contest, popularly known as the Battle of the Bulge, sees the Allies face a bitter winter with inadequate supplies of ammunition, food, and medical goods for the long, entrenched battle. The Axis counterattack was ultimately rebuffed, but not without the Allies suffering some 77,000 casualties. This episode is particularly effective in depicting the harsh physical conditions of the war (and might be compared to the German’s struggle to take Stalingrad, in which the losses were much higher). Fighting frostbite and hunger in the foxholes, Easy Company’s trials demonstrate the experience of isolation and boredom of battle. The importance of medical treatment and supplies is also a prominent theme of this episode.

Study Guide for Band of Brothers – Episode 9: Why We Fight INTRO: Band of Brothers is a ten-part video series dramatizing the history of one company of American paratroopers in World War Two—E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne, known as “Easy Company.” Although the company’s first experience in real combat did not come until June 1944 ( D-Day), this exemplary group fought in some of the war’s most harrowing battles. Band of Brothers depicts not only the heroism of their exploits but also the extraordinary bond among men formed in the crucible of war. In the ninth episode, Easy Company finally enters Germany in April 1945, finding very little resistance as they proceed. There they are impressed by the industriousness of the defeated locals and gain respect for their humanity. But the G.I.s are then confronted with the horror of an abandoned Nazi concentration camp in the woods, which the locals claim not to have known anything about. Here the story of Easy Company is connected with the broader narrative of the war—the ideology of the Third Reich and Hitler’s plan to exterminate the Jews. As with war itself, it contains graphic violence and language; it is not for the squeamish. Mature senior high school students, however, will find in it a powerful evocation of the challenges of war and the experience of U.S.

Help Them Grow. by Jamil Zaki SEPTEMBER 14, 2020 IMAGE SOURCE/GETTY IMAGES The last several months have stacked painful experiences on top of each other: a global pandemic, economic collapse, and new reminders of perennial racial injustice and police violence. This July, rates of depression and anxiety in the U.S. were more than triple those of early 2019. The simple question, “How are you?” has turned into an emotional minefield. Workplaces are saturated with trauma, too, and leaders are agonizing over how to keep their teams healthy as everyone works remotely and juggles any number of stressors. The science of trauma offers some insight about this moment, and some surprising hope: Instead of asking how we will recover from these painful times, we should ask how we will be changed by them. In many cases, we have an opportunity to change for the better.

Study Guide for Band of Brothers – Episode 7: The Breaking Point INTRO: Band of Brothers is a ten-part video series dramatizing the history of one company of American paratroopers in World War Two—E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne, known as “Easy Company.” Although the company’s first experience in real combat did not come until June 1944 ( D-Day), this exemplary group fought in some of the war’s most harrowing battles. Band of Brothers depicts not only the heroism of their exploits but also the extraordinary bond among men formed in the crucible of war. As the title of this episode suggests, the seventh episode sees Easy Company pushed to “the breaking point” after more and more unrelenting combat. After successfully thwarting the German counterattack in the Ardennes, Easy Company is sent to take the Belgian town of Foy. The company suffers, however, from more casualties, sinking morale, and lapses in leadership. This episode, more than any other perhaps, depicts the great emotional and psychological strain that soldiers endured in battle. • HOW PEOPLE LEARN to BECOME RESILIENT by Maria Konnikova, FEBRUARY 11, 2016
MARIA KONNIKOVA HOW PEOPLE LEARN TO BECOME RESILIENT By Maria Konnikova, FEBRUARY 11, 2016 Perception is key to resilience: Do you conceptualize an event as traumatic, or as a chance to learn and grow? Norman Garmezy, a developmental psychologist and clinician at the University of Minnesota, met thousands of children in his four decades of research. But one boy in particular stuck with him. He was nine years old, with an alcoholic mother and an absent father. Each day, he would arrive at school with the exact same sandwich: two slices of bread with nothing in between. At home, there was no other food available, and no one to make any. Even so, Garmezy would later recall, the boy wanted to make sure that “no one would feel pity for him and no one would know the ineptitude of his mother.” Each day, without fail, he would walk in with a smile on his face and a “bread sandwich” tucked into his bag. The boy with the bread sandwich was part of a special group of children. He belonged to a cohort of kids—the first of many— whom Garmezy would go on to identify as succeeding, even excelling, despite incredibly difficult circumstances. These were the children who exhibited a trait Garmezy would later identify as “resilience.” (He is widely credited with being the first to study the concept in an experimental setting.) Over many years, Garmezy would visit schools across the country, focussing on those in economically depressed areas, and follow a standard protocol. He would set up meetings with the principal, along with a school social worker or nurse, and pose the same question: Were there any children whose backgrounds had initially raised red flags—kids who seemed likely to become problem kids—who had instead become, surprisingly, a source of pride? “What I was saying was, ‘Can you identify stressed children who are making it here in your school?’ “ Garmezy said, in a 1999 interview.
