A Business Perspective Number of Pages 45 Date 22.03.2018 Degree Bachelor of Business Administration Degree Programme International Business and Logistics Instructor(s) Michael Keaney, Senior Lecturer Rock music has great importance in the recent history of human kind, and it is interesting to understand the reasons of its de- cline, if it actually exists. Its legacy will never disappear, and it will always be a great influence for new artists but is important to find out the reasons why it has become what it is in now, and what is the expected future for the genre. This project is going to be focused on the analysis of some im- portant business aspects related with rock music and its de- cline, if exists. The collapse of Gibson guitars will be analyzed, because if rock music is in decline, then the collapse of Gibson is a good evidence of this. Also, the performance of independ- ent and major record labels through history will be analyzed to understand better the health state of the genre. The same with music festivals that today seem to be increasing their popularity at the expense of smaller types of live-music events. Box 65002 I’m on your side oh when times get rough Port Ludlow And friends just can’t be found Washington Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down 98365 Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down That’s the first verse of Bridge Over Troubled Water. I remember hearing that song for the first time in the winter of 1970 when I was in San Francisco with The Brothers Four recording an album that included a song I had written called I Will Be There. I was driving alone in a rental car on an unfamiliar street when I first heard that rich piano sound followed by Art Garfunkel’s calming voice, When You’re weary, feeling small… I pulled over and let the simplicity and power and wonder of that song pour over me. As a songwriter that song still moves and inspires and haunts me. An understandably amazing song and phenomenal recording I think part of its endless allure is that when I heard it I was a twenty-two year old kid who that same week for the first time was having one of my songs recorded, so I listened not simply as a fan but as someone suddenly able to imagine myself creating something (dare I say) similar. There’s a story that speaks to the power of inspiration and awe-inspiring excellence about a young artist studying Flemish painters.

  • THE SOCIOLOGY of AMERICAN POPULAR MUSIC (SOAP) UNIT 4 NOTES Country Music & the Urban Folk Revival
September 12, 2013 THE SOCIOLOGY OF AMERICAN POPULAR MUSIC (SOAP) UNIT 4 NOTES Country Music & the Urban Folk Revival September 12, 2013 COUNTRY MUSIC - has its roots in the folk music traditions brought to the U.S. by European immigrants - in the 1700s, the folk music of the British immigrants dominated, because it was immigrants from these areas who constituted the majority of people who came and settled the "New England" colonies - as industrialism in the 1800s helped move the U.S. from a primarily rural nation to an urban one, traditional folk music was retained in the backwoods sections of the Southeast - in an area ranging from as far north as the Ohio River and as far west as Texas, but especially in the Appalachian mountains of Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Carolina, the old music traditions were preserved - in these remote and generally impoverished areas, people continued to live without electricity, indoor plumbing, or the conveniences of the "modern" world - despite their poverty, their lives were rich with music, as each successive generation passed down the songs and instrumental music that they had learned from the previous generation - music was used to accompany work, worship, social gatherings, celebrations, and simply to "while away the hours" with family members and neighbors on the porch at the end of a hot summer day - because of their simple country ways, these poor white folks were derisively called "hillbillies" when they came into town to look for word or buy supplies ("billy" is a name

  • HISTORY of BARBERSHOP Compiled by David Wright Lesson 6: TRANSFORMATION
HISTORY OF BARBERSHOP compiled by David Wright Lesson 6: TRANSFORMATION Smooth harmony groups of the 1950's. Some of the old professional quartet men from the early 1900s later formed studio back up groups like the Revelers as the thirties style came into vogue. These groups evolved and adopted the harmonies of the era, and through the forties developed a style which can be viewed as a first cousin of the barbershop style. These smooth singing groups are typified by the arranging of Gene Puerling and his quartet, the Hi Lo's. This style achieved its zenith in popularity in the '50s with another group, the Four Freshmen, who had begun singing together as young boys, harmonizing in the barbershop style. Other groups that would spring forth: The Four Coins ("Shangri-La"), The Ames Brothers ("Sentimental Me"), The Modernaires ("The Lamplighter's Serenade"), The Four Aces ("Love Is A Many Splendored Thing"), The Four Lads ("Standing On The Corner"), The Brothers Four ("Green Fields"), The Kingston Trio ("Tom Dooley"), The Andrews Sisters ("In Apple Blossom Time"), The King Sisters ("Imagination"), and The Chordettes ("Mr. Sandman"). Gospel quartet style. Another type of singing which has as its foundation the old quartet style is the gospel quartet, both white and black. In the country churches and backwoods of the United States there developed in the '30's and '40's a gospel quartet tradition which reached fruition in the fifties as a professional style. Probably the first and most of the early white gospel quartets was the Blackwood Brothers Quartet. These quartets stayed with traditional harmonies, for the most part, and the songs they wrote have all the harmonic content typical of the barbershop style.

Just out of country picked the song up and and clamored for Capitol Records to college, Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds and Dave Guard took dormant folk release it as a single. Capitol's vice president, Voyle Gilmore, called Frank music and gave it a comic twist irresistible to the college crowd (and just Werber in Hawaii. "Get those boys back here," about everyone else). • THE BEAUTIFUL WORLD of the BROTHERS FOUR - the Brothers Four (Seattle Works Entertainment) by Michael Mcdowell, Editor, Blitz Magazine
THE BEAUTIFUL WORLD OF THE BROTHERS FOUR - The Brothers Four (Seattle Works Entertainment) By Michael McDowell, Editor, Blitz Magazine “We’re still busy with lots of singing and traveling.” So said Bob Flick, bassist, co-founder and sole active original member of the pioneering folk rock quartet, the Brothers Four. The fruits of their labor are evidenced in abundance in this, their most recent release, and their first since their acclaimed Golden Anniversary collection in 2010. The Beautiful World Of The Brothers Four features a healthy mix of highlights from the band’s fruitful tenure with Columbia Records, as well as several sympathetic covers and a generous helping of new originals. Interestingly enough, some of the cover material is drawn from the repertoires of artists who came up through the folk boom of the late 1950s and early 1960s, as did the Brothers Four. To wit, the band herein respectfully revisits the Harry Belafonte/Kingston Trio staple, Scarlet Ribbons, as well as Belafonte’s Jamaica Farewell (which the Brothers Four had previously attempted on their The Big Folk Hits LP for Columbia) the Bob Dylan-penned Wonder Who/Peter, Paul And Mary classic Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright, the Kingston Trio/Pete Seeger/Dave Van Ronk staple All My Trials, the great Rolf Harris’ Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport (as Kangaroo Sing-Along) and the often recorded (Peter, Paul And Mary, the Journeymen, the Kingston Trio, the Highwaymen, Bobby Bare, the Seekers, Jackie DeShannon, Sonny and Cher and others) 500 Miles. During their association with Columbia, such emphasis on material readily associated with others of like minded artistic vision (with the exception of their aforementioned The Big Folk Hits album) would have been unlikely, given the resolve of all concerned at that time to establish their respective legacies with at least a modicum of individuality.

  • Commercialism, Counterculture, and the Folk Music Revival: a Study of Sing Out! Magazine, 1950–1967
Mikiko TACHI(p187) 6/2 04.9.6 3:18 PM ページ 187 The Japanese Journal of American Studies, No. 15 (2004) Commercialism, Counterculture, and the Folk Music Revival: A Study of Sing Out! Magazine, 1950–1967 Mikiko TACHI* IINTRODUCTION A cartoon in the February–March 1966 issue of Sing Out!: The Folk Song Magazine showed bourgeois parents asking their teenage daugh- ter: “Why should we buy you a guitar just so you can sing against our way of life?”1 The bespectacled, tie-wearing father and the dress- and necklace-wearing mother sit on the couch challenging the daughter who stands in front of them, with a stubborn frown of frustration, her fists clenched (Fig.1). This cartoon symbolized how the 1960s popularity of folk music was fuelled by the counterculture.2 Yet while folk music, played with the guitar, represented the counterculture—rejection of the mainstream way of life that was characterized by commercialism and conformity—the very means of resisting mainstream culture was achieved through consumption. This paper demonstrates how the folk music revival depended on com- mercialism to prosper despite possessing inherent anti-commercialist roots. The idea of resisting commercialism through consumption was central to the folk music revival. Analysis of the folk music magazine Sing Out!, between 1950 and 1967, reveals that even this left-wing folk music magazine, intent on circulating the “people’s music” unavailable Copyright © 2004 Mikiko Tachi.
