A Service of Welcome and the Collation of The Reverend Victoria Ramsey as Archdeacon of Newark St. Mary Magdalene with St Leonard, Newark Tuesday 8 June 2021 7.30pm Welcome to St Mary Magdalene with St Leonard, Newark A warm welcome to the parish church of St Mary Magdalene which, together with St Leonards, forms the united parish in the centre of the town. St Mary's has served as a beacon of Christianity in Newark for upwards of one thousand years. It stands in the heart of the town as a visible reminder of our Christian heritage and seeks to call all people to the service of Jesus Christ and as a witness to the love of God. All of us in the parish look forward to serving with our new Archdeacon. Our service this evening is led by the Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham, The Rt Revd Paul Williams, and the Bishop of Sherwood, The Rt Revd Dr Andy Emerton, will be preaching. No formal collection will be taken at this service, but donations towards the mission and ministry of St Mary’s with St Leonard are very welcome. If you are a UK taxpayer, you are invited to fill in your details on the Gift Aid envelopes provided so that we can reclaim your income tax and thus increase your donation by 25p for every £1 given. Thank you for your generosity. In the unlikely event of a fire or any other emergency, exits are via the south nave door or the west door. WC's are situated in the south transept. Please do ask one of the team should you require any assistance. Music at this Service We are most grateful to our musicians who will provide our sung worship this evening. The choir of St. Mary’s is directed by Stephen Bullamore; the organist is Mike Dutton. Our worship band comprises musicians from Trinity Church Nottingham and is led by Neil Wilson, supported by George White and Duncan Dean. The Office of Archdeacon of Newark There are two Archdeaconries in the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham, comprising Nottingham and Newark. The Archdeaconry of Newark was formed in 1912 serving a current population of around 475,000 spread across the four deaneries of Bassetlaw and Bawtry, Mansfield, Newark and Southwell and Newstead which comprise 135 parishes. With a Christian presence in every community, the Archdeacon of Newark is called to share leadership of the diocese to realise our vision of ‘Growing Disciples: wider, younger and deeper’. Tors will be enabling leadership at all levels to help develop and implement sustainable plans for growth, encourage the Area Deans and Lay Chairs and to release lay and clergy energy for mission within the varied cultural and social contexts across the Archdeaconry. The statutory and customary responsibilities of an Archdeacon include: supporting churchwardens and local churches spiritually and practically; ensuring systematic pastoral care for clergy, lay leaders and their families; involvement with the faculty process; and disciplinary matters. As part of this significant leadership role, Tors will also have particular responsibility as the diocesan lead for establishing and supporting new worshipping communities, building on her experience in church planting and growing congregations. Tors will also have a role in helping to further develop key relationships with schools, as well as with other strategic partners who make an enormous contribution to building caring and cohesive communities, especially as we emerge out of the current pandemic. The Revd Victoria Ramsey Tors grew up in South Wales on the Gower peninsular. She moved to London to study and worked as a Speech and Language Therapist in the NHS for 15 years. After being involved in mission and ministry as a lay person for many years, Tors sensed a call to ordination and was ordained in 2011. She served her curacy at Exeter Network Church and St Matthew’s Church in the Exeter Diocese; at the end of that time, she grafted a new worshipping community into St. Matthew’s where she became Vicar. In 2018, Tors stepped into her current role of Church Growth and Planting Enabler in the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham. Tors is currently studying part-time for an MA in Mission and Ministry with St. Mellitus College East Midlands. Tors is married to Adrian and they have two teenage children. She loves travelling and exploring new places and new food. Relaxation involves listening to music, walking the dog and watching films. Having had the privilege of working with many parishes in the Archdeaconry in her former role, Tors is delighted to become the next Archdeacon of Newark and for the opportunity to deepen further her relationship with its rich and diverse contexts, including many rural communities, market towns and the more populated areas of Mansfield and Ashfield. Music before the Service The organist will play Prelude, Fugue and Chaconne in C by Dietrich Buxtehude as we gather before our service this evening. Please sit THE COLLATION OF THE ARCHDEACON OF NEWARK The Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham, The Rt Revd Paul Williams, introduces the collation, then the Archdeacon-designate stands before the Bishop as the Registrar reads the Preface to the Declaration of Assent. The Church of England is part of the one holy catholic and apostolic Church, worshipping the one true God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It professes the faith uniquely revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the catholic creeds, which faith the Church is called upon to proclaim afresh in each generation. Led by the Holy Spirit, it has borne witness to Christian truth in its historic formularies, the Thirty-nine Articles of Religion, the Book of Common Prayer and the Ordering of Bishops, Priests and Deacons. In the declaration you are about to make, will you affirm your loyalty to this inheritance of faith as your inspiration and guidance under God in bringing the grace and truth of Christ to this generation and making him known to those in your care? THE DECLARATION OF ASSENT The Archdeacon-designate faces the Bishop and says: I, Victoria Claire Ramsey, do so affirm and declare my belief in the faith which is revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the catholic creeds, and to which the historic formularies of the Church of England bear witness; and in public prayer and administration of the sacraments I will use only the forms of service which are authorised or allowed by Canon. THE OATH OF ALLEGIANCE The Archdeacon-designate faces the congregation, holding a New Testament, and says: I, Victoria Claire Ramsey, do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, her heirs and successors according to law: so help me God.
