The Office of Archdeacon of Newark

There are two Archdeaconries in the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham, comprising Nottingham and Newark. The Archdeaconry of Newark was formed in 1912 serving a current population of around 475,000 spread across the four deaneries of Bassetlaw and Bawtry, Mansfield, Newark and Southwell and Newstead which comprise 135 parishes.

With a Christian presence in every community, the Archdeacon of Newark is called to share leadership of the diocese to realise our vision of ‘Growing Disciples: wider, younger and deeper’. Tors will be enabling leadership at all levels to help develop and implement sustainable plans for growth, encourage the Area Deans and Lay Chairs and to release lay and clergy energy for mission within the varied cultural and social contexts across the Archdeaconry.

The statutory and customary responsibilities of an Archdeacon include: supporting churchwardens and local churches spiritually and practically; ensuring systematic pastoral care for clergy, lay leaders and their families; involvement with the faculty process; and disciplinary matters.

As part of this significant leadership role, Tors will also have particular responsibility as the diocesan lead for establishing and supporting new worshipping communities, building on her experience in church planting and growing congregations. Tors will also have a role in helping to further develop key relationships with schools, as well as with other strategic partners who make an enormous contribution to building caring and cohesive communities, especially as we emerge out of the current pandemic.

The Revd Victoria Ramsey

Tors grew up in South Wales on the Gower peninsular. She moved to to study and worked as a Speech and Language Therapist in the NHS for 15 years. After being involved in mission and ministry as a lay person for many years, Tors sensed a call to ordination and was ordained in 2011. She served her curacy at Exeter Network Church and St Matthew’s Church in the Exeter Diocese; at the end of that time, she grafted a new worshipping community into St. Matthew’s where she became Vicar.

In 2018, Tors stepped into her current role of Church Growth and Planting Enabler in the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham. Tors is currently studying part-time for an MA in Mission and Ministry with St. Mellitus College East Midlands.

Tors is married to Adrian and they have two teenage children. She loves travelling and exploring new places and new food. Relaxation involves listening to music, walking the dog and watching films.

Having had the privilege of working with many parishes in the Archdeaconry in her former role, Tors is delighted to become the next Archdeacon of Newark and for the opportunity to deepen further her relationship with its rich and diverse contexts, including many rural communities, market towns and the more populated areas of Mansfield and Ashfield.

Music before the Service

The organist will play Prelude, Fugue and Chaconne in C by Dietrich Buxtehude as we gather before our service this evening.

PROCESSIONAL HYMN – SUNG BY THE CHOIR ONLY

My song is love unknown, Why, what hath my Lord done? my Saviour's love to me, What makes this rage and spite? love to the loveless shown, He made the lame to run, that they might lovely be. he gave the blind their sight. O who am I, Sweet injuries! that for my sake yet they at these my Lord should take themselves displease, frail flesh, and die? and 'gainst him rise.

He came from his blest throne, They rise, and needs will have salvation to bestow; my dear Lord made away; but men made strange, and none a murderer they save, the longed-for Christ would know. the Prince of Life they slay. But O, my Friend, Yet cheerful he my Friend indeed, to suffering goes, who at my need that he his foes his life did spend! from thence might free.

Sometimes they strew his way, Here might I stay and sing: and his sweet praises sing; no story so divine; resounding all the day never was love, dear King, hosannas to their King. never was grief like thine! Then 'Crucify!' This is my Friend, is all their breath, in whose sweet praise and for his death I all my days they thirst and cry. could gladly spend.

(Words: Samuel Crossman (1624?-1683); Music: John N. Ireland (1879-1962))

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING ISAIAH 40:28-31 read by Megan Ramsey

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Here ends the first reading.

Please remain seated

ANTHEM ‘Go Forth and Tell!’ sung by the choir

Go forth and tell! O church of God, awake! God's saving news to all the nations take; proclaim Christ Jesus, saviour, Lord, and king, that all the world his worthy praise may sing.

Go forth and tell! God's love embraces all; he will in grace respond to all who call: how shall they call if they have never heard the gracious invitation of his word?

Go forth and tell where still the darkness lies; in wealth or want, the sinner surely dies: give us, O Lord, concern of heart and mind, a love like yours which cares for all mankind.

Go forth and tell! The doors are open wide: share God's good gifts let no one be denied; live out your life as Christ your Lord shall choose, your ransomed powers for his sole glory use.

Go forth and tell! O church of God, arise! go in the strength which Christ your Lord supplies; go till all nations his great name adore and serve him, Lord and king for evermore.

(Words by James Seddon, Music by David Ogden)

SECOND READING 1 CORINTHIANS 2:1-5 read by Andy Abrahams, The Elected Mayor of Mansfield

And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.

Here ends the second reading.

SERMON given by The Bishop of Sherwood, The Rt Revd Dr Andy Emerton

Please remain seated as we listen to the worship band lead a time of sung worship

Before the Throne of God above

Before the throne of God above I have a strong, a perfect plea: a great High Priest whose name is Love, whoever lives and pleads for me. My name is written on his hands, my name is hidden in his heart; I know that while in Heaven he stands no power can force me to depart.

When Satan tempts me to despair and tells me of the guilt within, upward I look, and see him there who made an end to all my sin. Because the sinless Saviour died, my sinful soul is counted free; for God the Just is satisfied to look on him and pardon me.

Behold him there! The risen Lamb, my perfect, sinless righteousness, the great unchangeable I AM, the King of glory and of grace. One with my Lord, I cannot die: my soul is purchased by his blood, my life is safe with Christ on high, with Christ, my Saviour and my God.

King of Kings

In the darkness we were waiting Without hope without light Till from heaven You came running There was mercy in Your eyes To fulfil the law and prophets To a virgin came the Word From a throne of endless glory To a cradle in the dirt

(Chorus) Praise the Father Praise the Son Praise the Spirit three in one God of glory Majesty Praise forever to the King of Kings

To reveal the kingdom coming And to reconcile the lost To redeem the whole creation You did not despise the cross For even in Your suffering You saw to the other side Knowing this was our salvation Jesus for our sake You died

And the morning that You rose All of heaven held its breath Till that stone was moved for good For the Lamb had conquered death And the dead rose from their tombs And the angels stood in awe For the souls of all who’d come To the Father are restored

And the Church of Christ was born Then the Spirit lit the flame Now this gospel truth of old Shall not kneel shall not faint By His blood and in His Name In His freedom I am free For the love of Jesus Christ Who has resurrected me

O Come to the Altar

Are you hurting and broken within, Overwhelmed by the weight of your sin? Jesus is calling.

Have you come to the end of yourself? Do you thirst for a drink from the well? Jesus is calling.

(Chorus) O come to the altar The Father’s arms are open wide, Forgiveness was bought with The precious blood of Jesus Christ.

Leave behind your regrets and mistakes Come today, there’s no reason to wait; Jesus is calling. Bring your sorrows and trade them for joy, From the ashes a new life is born Jesus is calling.

Oh, what a Saviour Isn’t he wonderful? Sing alleluia, Christ is risen Bow down before him; For he is Lord of all Sing alleluia, Christ is risen.

Bear your cross as you wait for the crown Tell the world of the treasure you’ve found.

The Archdeacon of Newark stands before the Bishops and Bishop Andy prays for Tors saying

Lord God, who calls us to love and serve one another, we pray for Tors, for her family and for her future ministry as the Archdeacon of Newark. Take her hands and work with them; take her lips and speak through them; take her mind and think with it; take her heart and set it on fire with love for you and all your creation. Amen.

Bishop Paul says

Tors, I commission you to enable and serve the parishes, lay people and priests within your care; in the name of Christ, our Lord and Servant King. Amen

Please join the bishops in saying a prayer for ‘Growing Disciples wider, younger and deeper’ across the Archdeaconry of Newark, the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham, and in the wider world:

Lord, take us from where we are, to where you want us to be; make us not merely guardians of a heritage, but living signs of your coming Kingdom. Fill us with that faith, hope and love which embody the Gospel; and through the power of the Holy Spirit make us one. That the world may believe, that your name may be enthroned in our nation, that your church may more effectively be your witnesses. BLESSING

Bishop Christ, who makes saints of sinners and transforms those who walk the pilgrim path, raise and strengthen you that you may transform the world; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.

FINAL HYMN The Bishops’ party is led out as the choir sing:

O Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder Consider all the works thy hands hath made; I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy pow'r throughout the universe displayed;

Refrain: Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee: How great thou art, how great thou art! Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee: How great thou art, how great thou art!

When through the woods and forest glades I wander, I hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees; When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze; [Refrain]

But when I think that God, his Son not sparing, Sent him to die, I scarce can take it in, That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died to take away my sin; [Refrain]

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation, And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart! Then I shall bow in humble adoration And there proclaim, "My God, how great thou art!" [Refrain]
