    The Riley Institute at Furman ® Class of 2002 Katie Lee, First Place Spartanburg High School Spartanburg, SC Katie did a one‐on‐one mentoring program with Spartanburg High School Students and students from Houston Elementary School, where Spartanburg High students went to the elementary school on Wednesday mornings to help the children with their homework and form relationships. This program, known as “Helping Hands Mentoring Program” is still going and actually has expanded to another elementary school in the same district. Ann Stanton Cannarella Hartsville High School Hartsville, SC Ann Stanton created “Leisure Alley”: a small grassy community area turned into a park for the Boys and Girls Club of Hartsville, SC. The patch of grass was not maintained between the gym and learning center, making it the perfect place for a small "park." She, along with volunteers from her high school painted the park, as well as collected donations for landscaping picnic trees, and the play area. Nikasha Dicks Williston‐Elko High School Williston, SC Nikasha organized “Klub K.O.O.L: Spirit Day 2002,” an all day event designed to help younger youth in the community and provide them with role models. Klub K.O.O.L. (Kids Outreach, Operation Learn) participants included varsity football players, cheerleaders, and teachers who held a minature pep rally for the elementary school students and taught them about sportsmanship and dedication to working together as a team. Monica Handa Riverside High School Greer, SC Monica held a child mentoring program focused on getting children interested in reading. She went to a local daycare and read books to the children and reserved a special reading room at the library to read books to them.

    South Carolina Educational Opportunity Programs Week 4 GREENVILLE, SPARTANBURG, CHEROKEE, & UNION Monday, September 19 – Friday, September 23 1 Carolinas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (Code of Ethics) The purpose of an Ed-Op Program is to provide a chance for high school students, particularly juniors and seniors, to be exposed to many different educational opportunities and to explore specific interests. 1. It is the responsibility of each college or university to inform any person (who represents that institution) of the CACRAO Code of Ethics which will be in effect at all CACRAO sponsored Educational Opportunity Programs. Each institutional representative must respect the rights of other institutions. ● One official representative is considered adequate at an Educational Opportunity Program. If more than one representative is needed, those present must confine all activities to the assigned space. ● Group presentations are not condoned in arena settings where a number of institutions share common quarters. Such presentations discourage students from exploring all of their options. ● The use of overly conspicuous exhibits as promotional devices are prohibited, i.e. (videos, large pictorial displays, balloons…) ● Distributed educational information must be limited to printed materials which are accurate and tasteful. Handouts such as key chains, balloons, pens, pennants, and foods are not acceptable. ● Applications for admissions may be distributed, but not completed at Educational Opportunity Programs. ● CACRAO members should display the highest levels of decorum and avoid any unprofessional behavior that would disgrace the CACRAO organization or that would infringe upon the rights of their fellow members. 2. School counselors are encouraged to limit program invitations to CACRAO members and other degree-granting institutions.

    2013–14 Annual Report South Carolina Virtual School Program Introduction The 2013–14 school year was a period of enormous growth and change for the South Carolina Virtual School Program (SCVSP). It experienced a 31 percent growth in student enrollment; increased its course offerings; provided curriculum resources to elementary and middle school schools; and launched a rebranding campaign. In addition to these changes, the SCVSP continued to provide high-quality courses and instruction to South Carolina students working toward a high school diploma. Both the continuation of services to these students and the changes that took place will be highlighted in this annual report. Course Offerings In 2013–14 the SCVSP offered 78 courses in 8 subject areas—career and technology education, English, fine arts, health/physical education, mathematics, science, social studies, and world languages—at varying levels, such as Advanced Placement™ and college preparatory (see Appendix B for a complete listing of courses). Included in this number were three languages—Spanish, Latin, and Mandarin Chinese—and a variety of electives in such popular career majors as health occupations, family and consumer science, and business education. Of the 78 courses, 4 were new: Anatomy and Physiology, Introduction to Architectural Design, Media Arts, and Spanish 3 CP. In addition, SCVSP offered credit recovery (CR) courses in the four core content areas—English, mathematics, science, and social studies—to students who failed to earn credit for them on their first attempt. Aside from credit-bearing courses, the SCVSP offered free test preparation for the national college entrance and Advanced Placement™ examinations, as well as the South Carolina High School Assessment Program examination.
