2018-01 2018 6987 8th Line West, Elora, ON N0B 1S0 • 519.669.1349 Dear Friends, It is with anticipation we look forward to another spring season to supply you with high quality fruit trees and bushes. Like you, we believe growing your own fruit can be a very fulfilling pastime, not to mention nour- ishing at the same time. The 2017 growing season was certainly different than the year before. There was plenty of moisture but a lack of heat resulting in somewhat smaller trees in the nursery. At the same time we were excited to have our first crop of plumcots in both the Spring Satin and the Northern Sunset. The flavour on these sunripened beauties was outstanding and emphasized the fact that to capture the best flavour you need to pick it directly from the tree. The Spring Satin had very clean high quality fruit considering it got only one application of the Organic Orchard Spray. It is featured on the front cover. We actually harvested two peaches off our young Contender tree which is a new variety we're offering this year. There were many reports on peach success from other people likely due to the mild winter, so hopefully you can also experience fresh peaches in the future. Asian Pears were another fruit we had good success with. They do a lot of things right, beautiful spring blos- soms, easy to grow, and store well. As you can tell, growing your own fruit is always an exciting work in progress. Constantly discovering, an- ticipating and exploring.

  • Fabulous Fruits for Front Range Gardeners
FABULOUS FRUITS FOR FRONT RANGE GARDENERS Craig R. Miller Parks & Open Space Manager www.cpnmd.org Selection of Fruit Trees . Select Colorado hardy varieties of fruit trees. Some varieties will not tolerate low winter temperatures and are more susceptible to fire blight. Peach, apricot and sweet cherry trees are sensitive to spring frosts and will not always produce a bountiful crop. Apricots rarely fruit here because of late frosts in April, but are worthwhile landscape plants thanks to their fall color, summer foliage and other ornamental qualities. Peaches also are not dependable, but more so than apricots, as they flower later. Pollination of Fruit Trees . Apples – In general, apple trees need another variety to be productive. That variety needs to be blooming at the same time and be within a distance of ¼ mile (the distance a bee can fly). In the Denver Metro area, there are enough of both apple and crabapple trees that pollination is usually not a problem. But if you want to play it safe, plant 2 varieties within 100 feet of each other. Apricots – Use two varieties. Nanking cherry will also do the job. Sweet Cherries – Use two varieties. Sour cherries will also work as a pollinator. Sour Cherries – Self-fertile. Peaches – Self fertile. Pears – Most need another variety for a better yield. Ornamental pears will work as well. Plums – Most need two varieties. American plum or western sand cherry will also work. Pruning & Thinning Fruit Trees . Dwarf trees are easily trained with little pruning. If pruning is needed, save fruit-bearing branches and eliminate diseased, dead, thin or rubbing branches.

  • 2021 Dear Friends
2020-2 2021 Dear Friends: Welcome to our 2021 catalogue. Between these covers we believe you will find the finest collection of fruiting trees and plants in Canada. We also believe there has never been a better time to venture into a bit of garden- ing (especially fruit growing!) What other hobby allows you to dump your psychotherapist, to reduce your grocery bill as well as your carbon footprint, and to spend more time outdoors? No matter what your level of proficiency, you are bound to gain a fresh appreciation for the wonderful world of nature. As always, we suggest starting small and simple. We will admit, it always makes us nervous when a new cus- tomer sends in a large order. Do you know what to expect? Have you seen bareroot, dormant plants before? Do you know what your soil is like? Are you prepared to spend time watering and weeding? On the other hand, we have many loyal customers who start small and just keep coming back. In fact, we have a handful of en- thusiasts who have ordered from us every single spring since we are in business! 2020 is now history. At the time of this writing we are under lockdown (again) and of course no-one knows what the COVID-19 roller coaster ride looks like for the 2021 season. Our intentions are to continue curbside pickups which worked relatively well last spring. We greatly appreciate the patience and consideration shown by our clientele during the difficult days of 2020 and will be striving to improve our level of customer service for this spring.
