RUGBY UNION IS A CONTACT SPORT, WHICH CARRIES THE RISK OF SUSTAINING INJURY

SUFC PLAYERS ARE ASKED TO CONSIDER THIS RISK AND TAKE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS OF SUSTAINING INJURIES - If you can’t afford to get injured, you can’t afford to play. 9 INSURANCE

PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE It is COMPULSORY that all players of the Club have their own private medical insurance with top cover (including dental, physio etc) as well as Medicare (or equivalent for overseas players). This allows access to best surgeons, immediately. Players without hospital cover will have to have any operations required in the public system after having spent significant time on the public waiting list.

RUGBY INSURANCE Once registered you are covered by the Rugby AU Sports Injury and Liability Insurance Plan. This provides payment of 100% of Non-Medicare Medical Expenses after any reimbursement from your Private Health fund. A $100 excess applies to each and every claim and the maximum benefit payable is $3,000.

RUGBY AUSTRALIA INSURANCE CLAIM PROCEDURES Most injuries will not require completion of a rugby insurance claim, however bigger injuries requiring surgery and/or extended physiotherapy will. You should discuss with your physiotherapist or doctor whether this is necessary in your case. It should be noted that this insurance will not cover anything that Medicare covers. It is not the same as having private health insurance and will not get you into a private hospital nor allow you the doctor of your choice. It will help in the case of injury requiring extended physiotherapy and/or very serious injury.

It is the player’s responsibility to obtain all required information (including a doctor’s and physiotherapist’s report) and send the claim form to the nominated address within 30 days of injury.

Quick steps to follow: 1. Pay medical fees upfront 2. Claim all Medicare Medical Expenses from Medicare 3. Claim all Non-Medicare Medical Expenses from your private health fund 4. Submit a claim to the Rugby Australia/Gow Gates sports insurance plan a. Obtain and complete a claim form (available from the SUFC website) c. Lodge the claim form within 30 days of the injury d. Lodge additional documentation as required 5. If you are still out of pocket following ALL of the above steps, you can make a claim to SUFC’s injured players fund in October, 2019, where you must provide copies of all receipts/rebates.

10 INSURANCE

It is the player’s responsibility to ensure all insurance claim steps are completed, including submitting the form with 30 days of injury.

Refer to the instructions on the form or the ARU Sports Injury Claims for more information.

Note - Additional documentation may/may not be required by SLE in addition to the claim form (Step 4). Therefore, it is important to submit your claim form as soon as you have completed the details, within 30 days of injury, even before you have all accounts/receipts. This will ensure limited delays to the claims process.

Below are actual costs incurred by an SUFC player from one injury:

Upfront Medicare Private Total non- SUFC inj. Gap cost payment rebate Health Medicare players fund (out of (paid by Insurance expenses contribution pocket player) rebate paid expense) Specialist $5,294 -$744 -$224 $4,327 surgeon Assistant $930 -$209 -$70 $651 surgeon X-Ray $234 -$234 0 Anaesthetist $1,024 -$250 -$274 $500 Hospital Room $296 -$296 0 Ambulance Cost $399 -$399 0 Crutches/brace $245 -$245 0 etc. Pharmaceuticals $136 -$136 0 Physiotherapy $350 -$129 -$221 0 ARU insurance 100 0 excess Total $8,907 -$1,203 -$1,391 -$736 -$1,000 $4,578

In summary, the player had to pay almost $9,000 upfront, and ended up being $4,500 out of pocket.

11 INSURANCE

COVID-19 A player or official (coach, club official, match official) is not able to utilize the coverage included within the Personal Injury Policy if they contract COVID-19 whilst carrying out their role or participating within Rugby. COVID-19 is not treated or viewed by the insurer to be a sudden or unforeseen specific event and the Personal Injury cover afforded by this policy is not intended to cover events that are caused directly or indirectly by or attributed to any sickness or illness.

INCOME PROTECTION If you are self-employed or an employer, consider taking out additional income protection insurance (contact David Haigh if you are interested).

For more information or to make a claim you should contact David Haigh in the rugby administration office on 02935 14964.

INJURED PLAYERS FUND The Club allocates a small budgetary amount to an Injured Players Fund per annum. At the end of each season players with out of pocket expenses are required to bring in receipts and can apply for reimbursement from the fund. (Players must have claimed all they can through Medicare and Private Health.) Receipts must be provided no later than the end of September. Each request is assessed on an individual basis and recommendations are made to the Executive Committee on how to assign the allocated budget.

FINES Fines apply for the following, all money will be put into the injured players fund;

• $50.00 if a player misses a triage appointment with no communication • $200.00 if a player drinks after being diagnosed with a concussion

12 SELECTION POLICY

COMMON SENSE APPROACH TO SELECTIONS At this stage of the year after a long off-season of training, Colts moving into Grade and new faces at the Club, many players are sensitive to the selection process. Some players see selections at the beginning of the season as grading for the entire year.

All clubs struggle during the early part of the season nurturing the aspirations and ambitions of players to the reality of team selection and good of the Club. In all, Sydney University do a very good job in keeping a balance and reality in the selection process.

The following provides a basic outline of the selection process and general guidelines for the 2020 season. Common sense is the key to selection given the unique factors that SUFC have to consider when selecting teams. Representative players returning and the points system that affects all teams, require the selection guidelines to be flexible.

It is hoped that this document confirms your understanding and clarifies past issues, so that team selections become as streamlined as possible in 2020.

KEY UNDERSTANDINGS • Players must train twice a week to be considered for selection (only exception is 4th Grade) • The greater good of the Club must be considered first, at which time the Head Coach will consult with the respective SUFC coaches involved. • Selections will be based on form and what is in the best interest of the entire club for that particular weekend. • Players should move through the appropriate grades if returning from an extended break due to injury, as nominated by the Head Coach. • During the selection process, consideration should be given to the playing requirements of the higher grade and the appropriate SUFC coaches will be consulted. • Coaches are responsible for their immediate team and the greater good of the Club. • If a player is moving down a grade it is the responsibility of the Head Coach/coaching staff from the team the player is moving from to contact the player no later than 5pm on the Tuesday of training. The coaches are to provide feedback and specific areas of improvement that the player should focus on for future development.

13 SELECTION POLICY

SELECTION CONCERNS If a player has a selection concern the following is the way to communicate and address the concern;

• Speak with the coaches of the particular team directly to seek clarification of the selection concern. • Inform the Head Coach of the grievance and seek clarification on selection concern immediately.

Note - Players should communicate concern within 1 week of selection. Failure to do this within the allotted time will render the matter as closed.

AGENCY / MANAGER POLICY Whilst we consider ourselves the most professional club in Australia, our success is based on the fact that we essentially operate as a professional community club and not a professional franchise. We endeavour to forge strong relationships and communication lines with the Club’s players and members so that we can support them to be successful on and off the field. In this respect we believe close interpersonal communication and exchanges with senior members of the Club and Committee assist the growth and development of players.

For this reason our preferred policy is to communicate with you directly in terms of your personal support requirements and not your agent or player manager.

The President, Head Coach and SUFC staff will not engage in discussion with player managers on your behalf and will only communicate with players directly. We are very approachable and desire open lines of communication.

14 PLAYERPLAYER SECTIONSECTION -- OFFOFF FIELDFIELD PLAYER DUTIES

PLAYER DRESS All players are expected to be dressed correctly when representing the Club. With sponsorship agreements it is important that players wear current gear when attending games.

Compulsory Pre & Post Match Dress - 2020 Club Polo shirt, navy blue jeans and closed brown leather shoes.

PUT YOUR HAND UP NOT OUT! We want to promote a unique culture where the players take ownership and provide energy and input to all on and off field activities. The workload must be shared evenly amongst the whole playing group and not left to certain players, volunteers or full time staff. Like most things in life, the more effort or time you put into something the more reward, enjoyment or satisfaction you will get out of it.

The Club relies heavily on player assistance on match days to get various tasks done. These jobs are generally allocated on a team basis. Teams will be informed in the week prior to the job and all team members are expected to assist. The success of the Club is a product of the efforts of the players both on and off the field so please ensure that jobs allocated to your team are performed effectively.

Occasionally SUFC will ask players to help with fundraising (selling raffle tickets, sausage sizzles etc). All the proceeds raised go back into the rugby program, so it is in your best interest to help raise as much money as possible.

GAME DAY HELP Players in rehab are asked to meet David Haigh (0421 200 825) after rehab sessions have finished at 8.30am to assist with ground set up.

Every week a team will be assigned to helping with field pack down, your team manager will inform you when your team is on duty.

CLUB SONG

THE ‘VARSITY’

Grads and undergrads and fellows, Gaudy profs in reds and yellows, Sing with lungs as tough as bellows To our ‘Varsity.

Some of us are mining, Some in arts reclining, More and more Attack the law And revel in its methods of refining; Some are fools and some are clever Faculties divide and sever, Still we all belong forever To our ‘Varsity.

Varied are the tastes of students, Varied our degrees of prudence, Very varied our amusements, At our ‘Varsity.

We shall soon be scattered, Friendships maybe shattered, Some, or all Will grope or crawl, And get up very knocked about and battered. Some are hung and some are married, Some for years in gaol have tarried, Still they are all members of the Same old ‘Varsity.

Up the Students!
