Scotland will be aiming for a hat-trick of successive victories against the Wallabies, having won their last two encounters, at BT Murrayfield and in Sydney both in 2017. The last game at BT Murrayfield saw Scotland run in eight tries (there were 12 scored in total) in an astonishing 53-24 win over the team ranked third in the world at the time. Currently ranked sixth, the Wallabies are coached by Dave Rennie, former head coach at Glasgow Warriors who is assisted by the former Scotland defence coach Matt Taylor. It’s ten years since Scotland last beat the world’s number one ranked side, the Springboks, on home soil, though there have been some closely contested battles both home and away in the interim. The last time Scotland played South Africa at BT Murrayfield was in 2018 when they narrowly lost to the team that would go onto to lift the Rugby World Cup in Japan the following year. Tries from Peter Horne and Hamish Watson weren’t enough and the Scots were squeezed out 20-26. The last time Japan visited BT Murrayfield was in 2013 but the two teams have met three times since then. Scotland toured Japan in the Summer of 2016 and won a tough two-Test series. Then, in the Rugby World Cup in Japan three years later, the hosts beat Ireland, Samoa and Russia before beating Scotland in the winner-take-all final pool game of the tournament. Both teams play an exciting brand of running rugby, so this promises to be a cracking finale to the Autumn International series. We expect demand to be high and places to be limited, so please return your ticket order as soon as possible. The deadline for requests to be received is Friday 3 September. You will be advised if your application has been successful by Friday 10 September with payment required by Wednesday 22 September.     Newsletter October 2012 Spring – new beginnings There’s a bit of change in the air – and plenty under review. The new Youth rate is certainly causing a bit of a stir. There is an alarming youth unemployment problem and if this creates the anticipated 2000 jobs for young people, then I believe the initiative to be a good one. Young people need help to get a foot in the door – and this just might do it. In case you don’t know the ins and outs, from 1 April the wage will be available to 16-17-year-olds in their first six months of work with a new employer, 18-19-year-olds entering the work force after six months on a benefit, and 16-19-year-olds in recognised industry training courses Mary Jensen, WECA Co-ordinator involving at least 40 credits. I recently attended the introduction to TROQ – the Targeted Review of Qualifications – for Mechanical Engineering trades. Competenz called the meeting and unfortunately there was only a small turnout. This review is important to the industry and I will keep involved and keep you posted when it really gets going next year in March/April. Merger of Industry Training Organisations is still occurring but is fairly slow. We now have 27 ITOs, an improvement on the 42 of 2008, but still a long way to go to get down to an ideal 10 or 12 or so. On a lighter note, we had an interesting company visit to Convex Plastics – thank you very much Owen and team for hosting us.
