    Basquiat’s and Ofili’s Double Consciousness: An Exploration of Transnational Black Identity Through African Diasporic Art. Master Thesis by: Dzifa Quist Master of Arts International Relations S1686275 Thesis Advisor: Dr. Vineet Thakur July 31, 2020 Abstract People of African descent in the West share a similar experience of oppression through European colonization and the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. Such a shared experience has led to a transnational black consciousness. The black scholars W.E.B. DuBois and Frantz Fanon both discussed this concept, which describes an the existence of transnational black solidarity and identity, due to the subjugation to oppression. The black race has become the subject of negative discourses, a product of white supremacy and western hegemony. This thesis is a postcolonial reading of the artworks of black American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and the Black British artist Chris Ofili, through which we explore the transnational connection among the peoples of the African diaspora.     Art and Defacement: Basquiat at the Guggenheim By Prof. Sam Ben-Meir Region: USA Global Research, August 08, 2019 Theme: History Consider the following facts as you wend your way to the Guggenheim Museum and its uppermost gallery, where you will presently find The Death of Michael Stewart (1983), Basquiat’s gut-punching tribute to a slain artist, and the centerpiece for an exhibition that could hardly be more timely. Black people are three times more likely to be killed by police than white people. According to mappingpoliceviolence.org in 2014, fewer than one in three black people killed by police in the U.S. were suspected of a violent crime and allegedly armed. As American pediatrician Dr. Benjamin Spock once observed, “Most middle-class whites have no idea what it feels like to be subjected to police who are routinely suspicious, rude, belligerent, and brutal.” Such brutality is the focal point for Basquiat’s “Defacement”: The Untold Story, an exhibition that commences from a painting created by Jean-Michel Basquiat in honor of a young, black artist – Michael Stewart – who met his tragic end when he was supposedly caught by the New York City Transit Police tagging a wall in an East Village subway station during the early morning hours of September 15, 1983. Almost 30 years later, all the works are still missing and no arrests have been made. Well, one greedy, and very stupid, individual claimed to have two of the stolen works and was offering them for sale. According to reports, Todd Andrew Desper, 47, listed Rembrandt’s Storm on the Sea of Galilee, the only known seascape by the artist, and Vermeer’s The Concert, thought to be the most valuable of the stolen works (estimated at $200 million), on Craigslist. You must be kidding me! Are people really that stupid? Well, they do say you can buy or sell “just about anything” on Craigslist. Of course, the works caught the attention of many people and with the potential of a $5 million reward for their recovery it was not long before the authorities were notified.

    Smith at Accola Griefen, Basquiat at Gagosian Sunday, May 5, 2013Jaune Quick-to-See Smith at the Accola Griefen Gallery in New York Jean-Michel Basquiat, La Hara, 1981, NYC, Gagosian Gallery In March, Chelsea’s Gagosian Gallery presented a large show of the paintings of Jean-Michel Basquiat. With close to sixty paintings in Gagosian’s spacious Chelsea gallery on West 24th Street--it has 3 major galleries in NYC--this show reifies the hot market for the work of this Haitian-American artist who died in 1988 from a drug overdose at the age of 27. The Painting seen here, La Hara, refers to a slang and pejorative term for “the police.” It’s a tough work, depicting a bust-length image of a policeman, shown frontally, his mouth a line-up of teeth, his eyes blood red, surrounded by smudges, scratchings and a wide range of marks made in acrylic paint and oil paintsticks. As all of Basquiat’s work, it is done quickly and, typifying his best work (done before drugs began to take their toll), it exhibits not only his brio and spontaneity but also a degree of control. Today, the market for Basquiat’s work has skyrocketed; this past year saw two other paintings from 1981 (the year he painted La Hara) sell for $16.3 million and $20.1 million. It’s no wonder that Gagosian mounted this enormous show, and saw the crowds to support its decision.
