August 2019 Newsletter Southern Nevada Chapter, Inc. #4443 August 2019 The silver eagle news Southern Nevada Harley owners group 2019 SNHOG officers Director: Randy Roberts [email protected] Assistant Director: David Lewis [email protected] Secretary: Debbie Dartois [email protected] Treasurer: Gretchen Taylor Preston [email protected] Lead Road Captain: Glen Oelirich [email protected] Chapter Manager: Steve Ritchey [email protected] August 2019 History of Harley Davidson trivia question Congrats to Jim Berry, Larry McClelland, Larry Preston, Debbie Dartois, and Terry Scobee for being the winners of a $25 gift certificate at July’s meeting. A huge thank you to Law Tigers for the prize donations and the winners of those were Nancy DeViese, Glen Oelrich, Jane Ruppel, Jerry Allred, Dick Ryan, and Jim Berry. The trivia question this month is, “The term ‘jiffy stand’ was named for what part on a Harley Davidson motorcycle?” Page !1 Southern Nevada Chapter, Inc. #4443 August 2019 Assistant director’s saddle On the Throttle It’s been a great summer so far. August got here way too quick! Which means school is starting soon and it’s back to work I go . Anyway there are some great rides planned for August so make sure you check the event calendar. Kathy and I had a great vacation to New Orleans, and cruising to the Bahamas. We will be going to the Lost City Museum in Moapa August 3rd. The double overnighter to Carson City / Lake Tahoe August 9th – 11th is also one of the Red Rock Ride Challenge rides as well. We are doing a picnic ride to Mt. Charleston/Lee Canyon August 18th. Our monthly meet and eat will be at Farm 24/7 at Aliante August 20th. Springdale and Zion National Park on the 24th and then the Torrey double overnighter where we will visit Arches and Capital Reef National Parks. Remember in the dog days of summer to check your bikes, tire pressure, etc. stay hydrated and pack accordingly for every ride. Dave “Grumpy” Lewis Page !2 Southern Nevada Chapter, Inc. #4443 August 2019 Road captain article A NEW REASON TO RIDE by Jason Jenkins I recall a conversation that I had with someone a few years ago. They mentioned how lucky I was that I lived in Las Vegas. That we had great riding weather year-round (they were not from here, they don’t understand the summer) and we had the ability to ride North, East, South or West. My response, “Well we do have great riding weather but what you think is our advantage is also our curse. Las Vegas has four roads in and the same four roads out, and those roads are literally North, East, South and West.” Las Vegas is called the 9th Island because we have the largest population of Hawaiians outside of Hawaii and like Hawaii, we are an island, just we are surrounded by sand and dirt. So, what do you do when you start to get bored riding your Harley-Davidson motorcycle? There are only so many places that we can go to within a day’s ride and most likely you have been there a few times already. Three years ago, I was in the same boat. I had to find a new destination to ride to or expand the mileage that I was willing to travel. Though I did both, let me try to entice you with a new reason to ride, with new destinations that you may have never considered. Along the lines of Harley-Davidson’s ABCs of Touring program (Ride365), there are many other ride challenges and Tours that you can participate in. My personal favorite is called the Tour of Honor. The Tour of Honor (ToH) is an Iron Butt Association approved and an AMA sanctioned event that honors Veterans and First Responders. ToH riders will ride to pre-selected memorials and monuments to earn points. These points are tracked and rewarded via the TourofHonor.com website. Page !3 Southern Nevada Chapter, Inc. #4443 August 2019 In the three years that I have ridden with the ToH, it has truly renewed my passion to ride and continues to do so today. The destinations and people that I have met are wonderful memories for me and I hope to continue making new ones for a long time. “Americas Ultimate Long Distance Rider” is a Facebook group that promotes distance riding but there are a lot of points that can be had locally and in surrounding states. I describe it as a scavenger hunt of sorts. You can claim one point per category for every state. Point categories change year to year but some of the fun and interesting ones for this year are, ‘Vintage Gas Pump’, ‘Barn with signage on it’, ‘Life size statue of a horse’ or just find and take a picture of a Caboose. The third group that I participate in, is a Ride-to-Eat group called RTE-X-USA.com which is exactly as it sounds. You claim points by riding to and eating at pre-selected locations. Another new challenge is the Red Rock Harley-Davidson Riding Challenge that was introduced this year by our own sponsoring dealership. I have enjoyed this one a lot and be warned, I plan on getting every point that is available to me. The one thing that all these rides have in common is that it provides a new motivation to get out and ride. To see things that you may have never been to before. To honor a 9/11 hero, or maybe find a new restaurant or even finally notice that caboose that’s been sitting in the middle of the desert for last decade. The one thing that it will do, is provide a fond memory and an experience that you will always enjoy. • The Naming of Gaming
The Naming of Gaming Pauliina Raento Academy of Finland and William A. Douglass University of Nevada, Reno The naming of casinos in Las Vegas, Nevada, is an essential ingredient in the design of the city's entertainment landscape. More than 300 names have been used in the naming of gaming in Las Vegas since 1955. They occur in seven dominant patterns: 1) luck and good fortune, 2) wealth and opulence, 3) action, adventure, excitement and fantasy, 4) geography, 5) a certain moment, era, or season, 6) intimacy and informal- ity, and 7) "power words" commonly used in the naming of businesses. The categories are described and analyzed from the perspective of the evolution of Las Vegas. Regional variations between the Las Vegas Strip, Downtown Las Vegas, and suburban Las Vegas are also discussed. The names provide a powerful means of evoking senses of place, images, and identities for the casinos. They underscore the interpretative subjectivity and plurality of the relationship between people and commercial urban environments. Introduction We name people, things, and places to distinguish them from one another and to give them character. Often the names are commemorative and draw upon features (usually positive) of individuals and places. Buildings, streets and towns are named after other familiar places, historical events, and distinguished persons who have played a notable role in the shared past. As an example of the latter, over one quarter of the roughly 3,000 counties in the United States are named patriotically, most often commemorating a political figure (Zelinsky 1983, 6). Names of streets and buildings in capital cities and other centers of importance have special prestige.
