IDENTITIES BOUGHT AND SOLD, IDENTITY RECEIVED AS GRACE: A THEOLOGICAL CRITICISM OF AND ALTERNATIVE TO CONSUMERIST UNDERSTANDINGS OF THE SELF By James Burton Fulmer Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Vanderbilt University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in Religion December, 2006 Nashville, Tennessee Approved: Professor Paul DeHart Professor Douglas Meeks Professor William Franke Professor David Wood Professor Patout Burns ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank all the members of my committee—Professors Paul DeHart, Douglas Meeks, William Franke, David Wood, and Patout Burns—for their support and guidance and for providing me with excellent models of scholarship and mentoring. In particular, I am grateful to Prof. DeHart for his careful, insightful, and challenging feedback throughout the writing process. Without him, I would have produced a dissertation on identity in which my own identity and voice were conspicuously absent. He never tried to control my project but rather always sought to make it more my own. Special thanks also to Prof. Franke for his astute observations and comments and his continual interest in and encouragement of my project. I greatly appreciate the help and support of friends and family. My mom, Arlene Fulmer, was a generous reader and helpful editor. James Sears has been a great friend throughout this process and has always led me to deeper thinking on philosophical and theological matters. Jimmy Barker, David Dault, and Eric Froom provided helpful conversation as well as much-needed breaks. All my colleagues in theology helped with valuable feedback as well.

  • Building Cold War Warriors: Socialization of the Final Cold War Generation
BUILDING COLD WAR WARRIORS: SOCIALIZATION OF THE FINAL COLD WAR GENERATION Steven Robert Bellavia A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2018 Committee: Andrew M. Schocket, Advisor Karen B. Guzzo Graduate Faculty Representative Benjamin P. Greene Rebecca J. Mancuso © 2018 Steven Robert Bellavia All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Andrew Schocket, Advisor This dissertation examines the experiences of the final Cold War generation. I define this cohort as a subset of Generation X born between 1965 and 1971. The primary focus of this dissertation is to study the ways this cohort interacted with the three messages found embedded within the Cold War us vs. them binary. These messages included an emphasis on American exceptionalism, a manufactured and heightened fear of World War III, as well as the othering of the Soviet Union and its people. I begin the dissertation in the 1970s, - during the period of détente- where I examine the cohort’s experiences in elementary school. There they learned who was important within the American mythos and the rituals associated with being an American. This is followed by an examination of 1976’s bicentennial celebration, which focuses on not only the planning for the celebration but also specific events designed to fulfill the two prime directives of the celebration. As the 1980s came around not only did the Cold War change but also the cohort entered high school. Within this stage of this cohorts education, where I focus on the textbooks used by the cohort and the ways these textbooks reinforced notions of patriotism and being an American citizen.

  • The Very Thought of Long Beach, CA Immediately Brings O.G. Culture to Mind
The very thought of Long Beach, CA immediately brings O.G. culture to mind. You can practically see those classic Snoop Dogg and Warren G videos on repeat at the mention of the city. For as inextricably connected to West Coast hip-hop as the LBC may be, it gives rise to a fresh and fiery voice for soul in Giveon. With nearly half-a-million independent streams to his credit and acclaim by everyone from Flaunt to HotNewHipHop, the Long Beach-born singer and songwriter infuses Rat Pack-style classiness into modern R&B. “It’s a different perspective,” he explains. “There’s soul to it. There’s pop to it. However, I want to speak on relatable things everybody thinks about but nobody says—in a classy way. The goal is just to be Giveon.” One of three brothers raised by a single mother, he gravitated towards music at a young age. He initially found inspiration in Frank Ocean and Miguel between performing at school functions. As he recalls, “Mom did a really good job of sheltering us, so we didn’t fall into what was going on outside like the gang culture and poverty.” Attending a GRAMMY® Academy program at eighteen proved transformative as the instructor implored him to perform Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me To The Moon” for a project. “I had an epiphany after initially hearing Sinatra,” he says. “It was the very first time I heard a baritone singer. I got into Bobby Caldwell and Barry White from there. I realized my tone at this point.” Developing his own baritone delivery, he caught the attention of another Long Beach local and multiplatinum singer and songwriter AUGUST 08 [DJ Khaled, Justin Bieber] who served as an initial mentor.

  • I, Nebuchadnezzar Rich Nathan July 2 & 3, 2016 Strangers in a Strange Land Daniel 4
I, Nebuchadnezzar Rich Nathan July 2 & 3, 2016 Strangers in a Strange Land Daniel 4 In case you haven’t heard, we are just five months away from electing a new president of the United States. I hope that doesn’t come as a shock to you. But as the presidential campaign heats up, one of the questions that I would love to ask each of the candidates is this: “What do you think the essential problem is with people in America right now? We have lots of problems and lots of issues. Candidate A, you think you deserve to be in the White House for four years and be the most powerful person on earth, tell me why you deserve to run this country by sharing with us your brilliant diagnosis. What is the ultimate problem in our country? Why aren’t we happier than we are? Why are our families breaking down? Why don’t people get along? Why so much division and gridlock?” What is the basic problem in our world? One side will tell you that the main problems in America are all around issues of equality. There’s a growing income gap between rich and poor – in other words, income inequality. There’s a wage and opportunities gap between men and women – gender inequality; a need for criminal justice reform – racial inequality. There’s an educational gap requiring free college for all. From one side of the aisle, the basic problem in America is a lack of equality. The other side will tell you that the main problem in America is that Americans are being kicked around by the rest of the world – by illegal immigrants flooding into our country taking our jobs, by Chinese imports and Chinese currency manipulation undercutting American manufacturers.

  • The Justice in Policing Act of 2020 in the U.S
June 23, 2020 Honorable Nancy Pelosi Speaker of the House 1236 Longworth House Office Building Washington, DC 20515 Honorable Kevin McCarthy Republican Leader 2468 Rayburn House Office Building Washington, DC 20515 Dear Speaker Pelosi and Leader McCarthy: Since the killing of George Floyd just one month ago, our country has seen protests grow, attitudes shift, and calls for change intensify. We in the music and entertainment communities believe that Black lives matter and have long decried the injustices endured by generations of Black citizens. We are more determined than ever to push for federal, state, and local law enforcement programs that truly serve their communities. Accordingly, we are grateful for movement of the Justice in Policing Act of 2020 in the U.S. House of Representatives and urge its quick passage. The Justice in Policing Act is not about marginal change; it takes bold steps that will make a real, positive difference for law enforcement and the communities they serve. We celebrate the long- overdue rejection of qualified immunity, emphasizing that law enforcement officers themselves are not above the law – that bad cops must be held accountable and victims must have recourse. We applaud the provisions to ban chokeholds and no-knock warrants, to establish a national police misconduct registry, to collect data and improve investigations into police misconduct, to promote de-escalation practices, to establish comprehensive training programs, and to update and enhance standards and practices. This legislation will not only promote justice; it will establish a culture of responsibility, fairness, and respect deserving of the badge. Our communities and nation look to you to take a stand in this extraordinary moment and we respectfully ask that you vote YES on the Justice in Policing Act of 2020.
