Tyre Review - Big GSs and “Pure” Street Tyres

In addition to the usual range of “dual sport” tyres (like Tourances and Anakees and 607s), there’s now a few “pure” street tyres available in sizes to suit the 1150/1200 GS, Suzuki Vee (and Wee) Strom, Triumph Tiger etc etc … those bikes that run the common 150/70X17 on the back but the less common 110/80X19 on the front …. and these tyres include the Bridgestone BT020, the Michelin Pilot Road and the soon to be released Avons (“Azuras”????).

So …. since I think that “dual sport” tyres aren’t that much bet- ter than pure road tyres once the bitumen ends, I thought I’d try some of the new Pilot Roads that came out last year and at least have a proper road tyre on the road ….

But first I should say that, whilst I’ve gone through lots of sets of Tourances and Anakees and 607s and TKCs on my GS and my primary interest in the Pilots was grip and feel, I’m not into peg scraping, I’m not a tyre technician and most of my riding is two up with lotsa luggage /wine etc ….. (ok … ok …. probably more of the latter than the former!!!)

Anyway, for what its worth I’m VERY happy with the Pilots …. again I don’t push my tyres super hard so I can’t comment on their ultimate grip, but I do think my fat GS now steers much more quickly and predictably …. although I don’t know if it’s the compound or the tread or the profile (but its more probably related to the stiffness of the tyre’s carcass) ….. and on gravelly roads they seem just as good (or just as bad, depend- ing on your point of view) as Tourances and Anakees and 607s (which means that the occasional patch of mid corner Alternative sand can result in some “interesting” front end behaviour hahahahahah) ….

10 - 12 June 06 And I can’t comment on how many ks I’ll get out of them yet, but so far they’ve done about 5000-6000 ks and there’s lots of Talbingo Caravan Park rubber left, and, other than that, there’re quiet, smooth and !" 6 RIDE REPORTS “The Candelabra rally” Margaret Barlow Stuart Town / Peak Hill Easter W/E

Mini report:

We weren’t swamped with candelabra, (although Warren brought some beautiful blue candles), but the hotel at Stuart Town had the biggest kick arse candelabra I’ve ever seen, which they allowed us to take outside where we barbequed our dinner. Made Dave’s and mine look puny.

There was also a little arrangement near the coffee making machine which caught my candelabra-focussed eye.

Peak Hill Club House Hotel

I loved the baby (well, 6 yr old) asleep in the wheel barrow – why not. She asked could she get in to it to have a sleep, and Mum simply obliged, and then went on to dance the night away.

Warren, Dave, Lyn, Rob, Cheryl, Marg, Helen and Pat

I thought the idea of putting lounge chairs together for beds was great, too. The Candelabra All in all a great week-end with a difference, and lovely people at both pubs.

7 greenery to coastal concrete and lots of bananas in the trees. We also had a wonderful diversion (as did the others behind BMW Safari Report us) when we all followed Mick S-B on what we assumed was a by Paul and Jennie Breeze little known shortcut, only to realise that it was Mick who had been “caught short” and he was merely seeking out the near- est “gents”!! Anyway, we finally reached the Nautilus Resort at 2006 BMW TourenSport Safari Coffs which, despite having the GS Riders in November last year (and Paul, Jock, Greg & Mick in particular), still provided Day (minus) 1 a warm and generous welcome!!!!! Paul and I stayed at Cessnock after looking around the Hunter Valley wineries, catching the Cheese and Wine Festival and having lots of olive, bread and cheese tasting………burp.

Day 0 After booking into our accommodation about 300 of us turned up at the Hunter Valley Cypress Lakes Resort to register, ad- mire ourselves in our new T shirts and to enjoy the evening festivities which included an outdoor buffet and a band.

Mick, Greg, Jennie, Jock, Sue and Paul Day 3 Still at the Nautilus Resort, and day trips were the order of the day. With Jock and Sue we headed up to Bellingen, had a bit of lunch and a touch of retail therapy, and then Jock and Sue headed up to Dorrigo on the recently resurfaced Waterfall Way, which Jock later commented was “quite a hoot”. That evening everyone gathered for another outdoor buffet around the swimming pool, with a couple of daring flame throwers, drummers and a small band.

Day1 Up early and off to Tamworth via Dungog (see front cover) and, with just a touch of dirt, the downfall of one poor lady rider near Nowendoc. The road from Dungowan to Tamworth was a really great ride and then it was into the bustle of Tamworth to find our motel. A quick dip in the pool at the motel (a hot day but a bl..dy cold pool !!!!), and then off to the pub in town to pick up the next day’s ride details.

Day 4 Off to Ballina …. Gwydir Hwy, New England to Tenterfield then the Bruxner Hwy via Casino and Alstonville. At Casino a mini summit was held with Greg Tow, Mick Spencer-Brown and the Wallaces about our 1150 GS which was making alarming noises. Since the alternator belt seemed the most probable problem but we didn’t have a spare, we just added oil …’cause we had some of that!!! The noise went away (???) BUT only until we approached Ballina where it became quite alarming and then stopped ….. as did the alter- nator!!!!. Plans were made with the Ballina BMW dealer to fix it Day 2 the next day (it turned out that the nut had come off the pulley From Tamworth we were headed to Coffs Harbour via some of shaft and the thread was stuffed ….. aaagghhhh !!!) and, the prettiest roads you’ll ever see, including the Oxley High- after finding our motel, we headed off to the “architec- way, (although poor Paul had ‘orrible flashbacks regarding tural wonder” that is the Ballina RSL club – a must see severely bending his R1100S on this road back in 2001). Lunch was at South West Rocks after a convoluted route next time you’re in Ballina. through the countryside. The scenery changed from mountain 8 The rest of the evening was enjoyable with lots of prizes given to the “goofy”/ bad luck etc stories, e.g. the lady who asked Steve Marshall if she could have a screw - for her husband, of course, since he was missing one. Then we danced until we were ordered out to the monorail at midnight (and some of the boys gave a display of the dancing prowess that made them famous on the GS safari).

End of the Safari but not the trip.

Day 5+1 The next day we (Jennie and Paul, Greg Tow and Mick Spencer-Brown) were off to Hervey Bay to visit Mick’s mother. We found a really cute “boutique” hotel on the beachfront (the “cheap ‘n cheerful” variety), then ducked around to say hello to Mick’s mum Cath. 3 hours later we staggered out after being fed a great baked dinner and home brewed beer (thanks Cath!!) and lots of good conversation. Next morning Mick had to pay back the dinner by digging out a few tree stumps and other odd jobs that Cath had lined up while Greg and us ducked off to Bundaberg and coastal From the RSL club which is on the water Bundara. We dropped into the Bundy Distillery to get Mick his Day 5 favourite brew and then travelled through lots of cane fields From Ballina the rest of the Safari headed off via Lismore, before returning to Hervey Bay to frequent the local Motor Boat Kyogle, the Lindesay Hwy, Boonah, Beaudesert, Beechmont, Club for dinner …... yes, we seem to have a thing for clubs!!! and Nerang to Nara Sea World. Meanwhile, back at Ballina, Paul and I walked around the town Day 5 +2 and found that they have a half decent Naval Museum with a Off to Tenterfield via various inland roads …. We had a Then to Singleton for a motel …. but they were ALL full (full !!! great seafood buffet dinner, exchanged the usual banter about on a Wednesday night!!!….. in Singleton!!) but we found some- the days daring exploits and vowed never to eat again for a thing in Branxton. Some Back home in a leisurely fashion via the Putty Road (double of us came back later and saw the various shows and enjoyed points remember!!) and home mid afternoon after 13 days and ourselves immensely. Others went for a ride and the “spirited” 4500 ks … great roads, great weather, great company (thank Mick S-B livened up his day (and that of a poor local lady) by you everybody!) …. now where’s the next one off to …. Victo- panel beating the side of her once immaculate Merc and ria ??? … Western Australia ???? adding some nice blue duco to the side of his GS. That evening was the Farewell Dinner with pre-dinner drinks Jennie Breeze served at the Corkscrew Roller Coaster and Pirate Ship. I (Jennie) managed 3 rides on the Corkscrew but that was in- significant compared to some of the others who must have clocked up at least 12 each (Paul, Jock, Greg, Mick, Sue, Rotten weather Fiona, Petris (sic) etc etc) before they were thrown out …. Saturday morning a man gets up early, dresses quietly, packs

his lunch, puts on his long johns and leathers, and goes to the garage. He starts his Norton Commando and looks out of the garage. The rain is pouring down; it is like a torrential downpour. There’s snow mixed in with the rain, and the wind is blowing 50 mph. He comes back into the house and turns the TV to the weather. He finds it's going to be bad weather all day long, so he quietly undresses and slips back into bed where he cud- dles up to his wife's back, now with different anticipation, and whispers, "The weather is terrible.". To which she sleepily replies, " And can you believe my stupid husband is out there riding his bike!!!!".

An 85-year-old man was requested by his doctor for a sperm count as part of his physical exam. The doctor gave the man a jar and said, "Take this jar home and bring back a semen sample tomorrow."

The next day the 85-year-old man reappeared at the doctor's office and gave him the jar, which was as clean and empty as on the previous day.

The doctor asked what happened and the man explained:

APPLICATION FOR NEW MEMBERSHIP / RENEWAL OF MEMBERSHIP BMW Touring Club of Incorporated (Incorporated under the Associations Incorporation Act, 1984)

The BMW Touring Club of NSW was founded in 1965, with an initial membership of 15. The aim of the club is to provide a social medium for BMW riders and motorcycle touring. It is not necessary for you to own a BMW motorcycle to join the club. There are a wide range of activities throughout the year, ranging from regular day rides, rallies (local, interstate and other BMW club rallies), runs with interstate BMW clubs and camping weekends. We have gained a large number of trophies from our attendance at rallies. The club also has regular maintenance days (where you can tap into a vast range of knowledge from our members). We have spare parts available at a slight discount for members and a variety of special tools for use when servicing, repairing or replacing components. We also have social evenings, an annual presentation night/dinner and a Christmas party. The club encourages family involvement in all events.
