This fund provides support for many programs in the Diocese as indicated in the Sower. Our offering reminds us that we are members of a greater body of the Church that operates beyond the barriers of our local parish and that each one of us has a role to play in the Church’s mission of evangelization and sanctification. Please note: that at this time our seminary in Stamford is growing and needs your support. You have received by mail your request for support. Please help this fund as you have in the past. Please do not send your donation to Stamford!!! Do not use Paypal !!! Donations $5,915 or 84.5% to go $1,085 This week $0.00

The 2021 Stamford Diocesan Charities Appeal form has been sent. Please make checks payable to: “The Diocese of Stamford” and send or bring your donation to the church. Cash is acceptable form for payment. Do not use Paypal for your donation ! Since every parish in the diocese has been assigned a Goal for this campaign, please do not sent your gift directly to Stamford. Our parish needs to be properly credited to meet its goal of seven thousand dollars. We did not meet our goal in 2020. While many of our regular contributors have fallen asleep in the Lord, it is even more essential that every parishioner consider such diocesan programs as vocations, religious education, evangelization, and stewardship worthy of personal charity. Sanctify those who love the beauty of Your house. June 28, 2021

Subject: Need for Church upkeep and restoration

Dear Parishioners:

In the year 2022, it will be the 125th Anniversary of the establishment of Saint Peter and Saint Paul Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. His Excellency Bishop Paul Chomnycky, O.S.B.M., Eparch of Stamford, has approved Sunday June 5, 2022 to be present with us to celebrate this significant moment in the history of this parish. This parish community has been blessed and has much to be proud of in its long history. Sanctify those who love the beauty of Your House is quoted from the prayer from the end of Divine Liturgy. It speaks measurably of how the founders of this parish understood the importance of the beauty of God’s Holy House.

We, as a parish family, will begin preparation for our 125th Anniversary. There are many needs to be met in our church because of its age. One is our church kneelers. The pads need to be replaced and the kneelers repaired. This is a very costly project, a goal of at least $50,000. In addition, there are a number of structural issues with the upstairs church and downstairs that need to be addressed. For example, we just received a quote for $10,000 for repairs that need to be done due to water damage.

In the past year, our church financial situation has been greatly affected because of the Covid19 pandemic. We have been unable to have fundraisers and weekly donations were tremendously low. Therefore, we are launching a fundraising initiative to attend to the many needs of our church.

All members of the parish are called to assist and be as generous as possible in this fundraising effort, following the example of the founding fathers and mothers of this parish, who gave selflessly to build our beautiful church building. We pray our efforts will help sustain our church building for us and future generations. Enclosed you will find an envelope to make your donation and a stamped return envelope.

Do not use PayPal ! Please make checks payable to: Saint Peter & Saint Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church. We thank you in advance for your generosity and wish God’s blessings on you and your families. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Very Rev. Archpriest Edward P. Young, Pastor Mr. Scott Walker, Parish President

You have received this letter in the mail. Please be so kind as to use the enclosed return envelope to the parish with your gift to your parish church. God Bless and Protect.

NINTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST FEAST OF THE DORMITION OF ST. ANNE - MOTHER OF THE HOLY Epistle - 1 CORINTHIANS 3: 9 - 17 ~ Gospel - MATTHEW 14: 22 - 34 TONE 8

Sometimes we fall into the trap of thinking that we are totally self-sufficient and able to live exactly as we please with no serious consequences. Self- reliance, independence, and freedom certainly have their places, but they also have their limits and must be kept in proper perspective. We must develop these qualities in light of who we are before God, if we are to flourish as His beloved sons and daughters. That is precisely what Peter did not do in today’s gospel reading, however. As he miraculously walked on the water with Jesus Christ, he did not accept the reality of who he was in relation to the Lord. He turned his trust away from the One Who was enabling him to do what he could never do on his own, to walk on the water. Instead, he focused on the wind and the waves and his own weakness, and began to sink. It had apparently not sunk into Peter’s mind that he was walking on the waves purely because the Son of God had enabled him to do so. As he turned away from trusting the Lord and relied only on himself, he began to sink like a stone. As we all know, that is simply the reality of what happens to a human being who tries to walk on the water by his own power. Whenever we use our freedom as an excuse to turn away from Him and to trust only in our own desires and abilities, we turn away from our true selves. We cut ourselves off from the truth, reality, and power that are necessary for us to flourish as those created in the image and likeness of God. If we are honest, we will see that it does not take much at all to put us in our place, to show us that living by our own designs is a path that leads only to weakness and despair. That is why Peter started to sink when he focused more on the stormy sea than on the Lord. Our ultimate choice, which we make every moment of our lives, is whether to entrust ourselves to the merciful, transformative power of the Savior. He alone provides the path to true freedom from slavery to our passions and ultimately from death. It is no accident that Peter’s fear in that moment was focused on death. He was a fisherman and knew that someone in his situation was about to drown, but he at least had the presence of mind to call out “Lord, save me.” The circumstances that we face due to our lack of faith may not be quite so clear, but the meaning is the same. When we step away from the one true foundation, we choose the pain of death instead of the joy of the empty tomb. When we nourish hate and anger toward others, we murder them in our hearts. When we embrace lustful thoughts, we enslave ourselves to immoral desires and commit adultery. When we refuse to forgive others, we harden our hearts and make it impossible to accept God’s forgiveness for our own sins. When we do not serve our neighbors in need, we disregard the Lord Himself. No, we do not have to do anything nearly as dramatic as Peter did in order to start sinking into the depths. The Lord has made us in His image and likeness. It is our very nature to be united with God in holiness. Unfortunately, our common corruption has gravely distorted our ability to fulfill that righteous vocation. That is why we so easily worship money, power, pleasure, and getting our own way. It why we so easily make success in the world on our own terms a false god. And even as we become more and more enslaved to our self-centered desires and illusions, we may truly believe that we are doing the right thing. That is simply a sign that we are diminishing ourselves even further. In this light, we must all seriously discern whether we are really being true to ourselves as those created in God’s image and likeness and whose one true foundation is Jesus Christ. Are we being true to ourselves as God’s temple in whom the Holy Spirit dwells? Are we being true to ourselves as those who have put on Christ in baptism and who are nourished by His Body and Blood in Holy Communion? If not, then we are living a lie that puts major roadblocks between us and the holy joy that it is our nature to seek. When Christ enabled Peter to walk on the water, He gave us an icon or image of what it means to share in His life by grace. He showed us that human beings may participate already in His victory over sin and death, that in Him we may know a blessed freedom that enables us to overcome even the darkest and most powerful temptations. As we grow in personal union with our risen Lord, He heals us from corruption and empowers us for a life of holiness. In Him, we find infinitely greater fulfillment than in a life of slavery to our self-centered desires and illusions. That is what it means for us to walk with Him across the stormy seas of our lives. The basic point is very simple: The more we turn our attention to Christ and His salvation, the better we will be able to walk with Him on the water through the storms of our own lives and of our fallen world. The more mindful we are, the closer watch we will keep on our thoughts, the more strength we will have to reject the lies that we so often tell ourselves—and instead to open our hearts to the mercy of the One who is our foundation, our Savior, and the victor over sin and death. Apart from Christ, we will sink like stones. But in Him, we become fellow workers with God for our salvation. https://blogs.ancientfaith.com/easternchristianinsights)

TODAY - FEAST OF THE DORMITION OF ST. ANNA MOTHER OF THE HOLY THEOTOKOS Today we celebrate the Feast day of The Blessed Dormition (falling asleep) of Saint Anna, the Holy Ancestor of God and the Mother of the Most Holy Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary. According to tradition, Anna, the ancestor of God, lived for sixty-nine years, and her spouse Joachim, for eighty; according to one account, Saint Joachim died two years before Saint Anna. The Theotokos had been orphaned of both her parents already when she was eleven years of age, when she was living in the Temple (see Sept. 8 and Nov. 21). Saint Anna is invoked for conceiving children, and for help in difficult childbirth. Apolytikion of Dormition of St. Anna - Fourth Tone: “O Godly-minded Anna, thou didst give birth unto God's pure Mother who conceived Him Who is our Life. Wherefore, thou hast now passed with joy to thy heavenly rest, wherein is the abode of them that rejoice in glory; and thou askest forgiveness of sins for them that honor thee with love, O ever-blessed one.” Kondakion: “She carried in her womb none other than the one who gave birth to our life, and for this, she was considered worthy of the eternal banquet. There, she rejoices forever with the blessed of heaven, and, with them, she prays unceasingly for us all.”

CELEBRATING WORLD DAY FOR GRANDPARENTS AND THE ELDERLY In January, at the Sunday Angelus in Rome, Francis announced World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly is to be held on the 4th Sunday in July, the closest to the Feast of St. Anna, July 25, whose Dormition we celebrate today. Excerpt from Our Holy Father’s Greetings/Message on this First World day of Grandparents and the Elderly: Dear Grandfathers and Grandmothers, Dear Elderly Friends, “I am with you always” (Mt 28:20): this is the promise the Lord made to his disciples before he ascended into heaven. They are the words that he repeats to you today, dear grandfathers and grandmothers, dear elderly friends. “I am with you always” are also the words that I, as Bishop of Rome and an elderly person like yourselves, would like to address to you on this first World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly. The whole Church is close to you – to us – and cares about you, loves you and does not want to leave you alone! This World Day that we are celebrating today can help us to understand that all of us, young and old, grandparents and grandchildren, whether or not we belong to the same family, are “one body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one hope of your call”. The elderly − like the young − are important. Without them the body of Christ, the Church lacks something. That is why it is necessary for them to have their rightful place within each of our communities. It is crucial that we share in the lives of older people in the same way that the Lord, in giving us his Body and Blood, has made us sharers in his own. BLESSINGS ON A LONG LIFE: God of mercy, You have given your children the gift of long life, And they ask for your blessing. Let them feel the tenderness and strength of your presence. As they look back to the past, let them rejoice in your mercy. As they look to the future, May they persevere in hope that does not fade. To you be praise and glory for ever.

FAST FOR THE PREPARATION OF THE DORMITION OF THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD The Feast of the Dormition is preceded by a two-week fast, referred to as the Dormition Fast. From August 1 to August 14 (inclusive). The Eastern churches (both Catholic and Orthodox) traditionally observe a period of fasting prior to the Great Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos (August 15) – one of the four fasts that are part of the Church year in the East, the others being the Nativity Fast, the Great Lent Fast and the Apostles Fast. This fast is also called “Our Lady's Fast” or the “Assumption Fast.” The faithful by tradition fasted from red meat, poultry, meat products, dairy products (eggs and milk products), fish, oil, and wine. The Dormition Fast is a stricter fast than either the Nativity Fast or the Apostles' Fast, with only wine and oil (but no fish) allowed on weekends. As with the other Fasts of the Church year, there is a Great Feast that falls during the Fast; in this case, the Transfiguration (August 6), on which fish, wine and oil are allowed.

LIVING THE YEAR OF ST. JOSEPH: Let us turn our prayers and devotion to St. Joseph, entrust our daily work to him, an opportunity “to encourage us to implore his intercession and to imitate his virtues and his zeal”. Remember our Fathers, living and deceased and also our Spiritual Fathers, our Clergy. PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH: “Great St. Joseph, whose protection is so strong and prompt before the Throne of God, I place in you all my interests and desires. Assist me by your most powerful intercession to obtain all spiritual blessings, in Jesus Christ, our Lord. And, by gaining here below your Heavenly favor, I offer my thanksgiving and homage to God, the most loving of Fathers. Oh Great St. Joseph, I never weary in thinking of you, with the Child Jesus asleep in your arms. Ask for me the favor of His love, when I draw my dying breath! St. Joseph, the Patron of departing souls — Pray for me”.

LET US CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR VOCATIONS: Our awareness and prayer for vocations should continue even more fervently and with the commitment to keep our prayers focused on the Vocation Crisis. We ask you to continue to fully commit to deep, sincere prayer for vocations to the priesthood, the deaconate, the monastic and religious life. As a community we should strive that our prayers be raised in unity ~ unity in mind, heart and soul, praying that the will of God will send workers into His vineyard. Whoever serves Me, must follow Me, and where I am, there also will My servant be. John 12:26 SUMMER VACATION REMINDER: Many of you will be making plans to travel in the coming weeks. Wishing everyone a Holy and Safe Summer. Remember that there is no vacation from your Sunday obligation of attending Liturgy on Sunday’s and Holy Days. A quick ‘google’ search will help you find a Ukrainian Church in the area you are visiting or a local Roman Catholic parish where you may go and worship. Prayer to Our Lady While Traveling: “Hail Mary full of Grace, help me find a parking space” ! “Hail Holy Queen, Please make the light turn green”! SAFE AND HAPPY TRAVELS ! Always turn to Our Lady and her Son Jesus ~ Remember your daily prayers
