Shag Rag November 2012 Shag Rag November 2012 Shag Rag November 2012 Vol. XVIII, No. Dedicated to the Preservation of the Carolina Shag and Beach Music PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by Dave Bushey Big crowds! That’s what we’re seeing at The Elk’s Lodge every Wednesday. Lots of new faces. And lots of returning faces. A nice, large dance floor. Good food. Good music. Good dancing. Great friends! What more could a person ask for? Congratulations to Joan McKinney, NVSC’s newest PRO and her partner, Tom Edwards. And Cathy Metcalf and Vaughn Royal, too, who won their CSA contest in Beckley, WV last month, continuing their advancement in the Competitive Shaggers Association. Many MANY hours of practice and choreography are dedicated by all of these dancers. And, if you don’t know, Nancy Guilliams has been bitten by the competitive ‘bug.’ She and Bob Lutz entered the Newcomer Division. They all teach at NVSC! No wonder the weekly dance lessons have been crowded in recent weeks! So, grab that Red Dot dancer and help them practice the moves – and your moves, too! October has been Nominations Month. Many thanks to Jason Potter and the Nominations Committee for calling our membership and finding qualified candidates. It’s now November. And, that means Elections. On November 14th, you will have your opportunity - your duty - to vote for the 2013 Board of Directors. In this Shag Rag are the personally written ‘bio’s’ and photos of the 11 intrepid individuals who have announced their candidacy. Please take the time to read their resumes and thoughts about NVSC. Then, join in the fun on November 14th at The Elk’s Lodge and VOTE! If you can’t make it that Wednesday, you still have an opportunity to vote by returning your absentee ballot. It must be received in the PO Box by November 13th to be counted. And, of course, your membership must be current!! Have you paid your dues? This coming Sunday is one of our biggest Events of the year – the 14th Annual Shag-a-Thon! This year is a special treat as the award-winning Rick Strickland Band is coming to Northern Virginia to help us raise funds for Capital Caring, NoVa’s premier hospice organization. It will be held at The Elk’s Lodge on Sunday, November 4th from 1PM to 5PM. 100% of the Gate will be donated to Capital Caring as well as the very generous donations of our members, family and friends. Come join in the fun! And December is right around the corner. NVSC’s Annual Holiday Party is December 1st at the Kingstowne Snyder Community Center. We’ve celebrated the season there for several years and have had a great time! Our DJ this year is none other than Betty Brown, from Charleston, SC! It’s also our Annual Toys for Tots Drive. The Marines wowed us last year with their dancing skills. Let’s return the favor and wow them with a zillion unwrapped toys for the kids. This is a Pot Luck Dinner. The Club will supply the turkey, ham and rolls. All you have to bring is an appetizer, a salad or a dessert. There will be a Sign-Up sheet at the front desk at The Elk’s throughout November. It’s a BYOB Event, but remember the local law enforcement are aware of extra socializing that goes on at this time of year! • The Music of Donny Hathaway Everything Is Everything Donny Hathaway, 1970
SUMPTUOUS SOUL: THE MUSIC OF DONNY HATHAWAY EVERYTHING IS EVERYTHING DONNY HATHAWAY, 1970 Keisha Hicks A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2014 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Rebecca Mancuso, Graduate Faculty Representative Ellen Berry Radhika Gajjala © 2014 Keisha Hicks All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor The song “This Christmas” by Donny Hathaway is played only once a year during the holiday season. His presence is so strong during the holidays for African Americans because he is one of the distinctive cultural markers of the season. The question at hand is why is he relegated to the Christmas season but what about the rest of the year. In 2010, National Public Radio (NPR) created the series 50 Great Voices as a way to expose NPR listeners to artists who were not at the forefront of public consciousness. On June 26, 2010 Donny Hathaway debuted as the “Neglected Heart of Soul” but does “neglected” hold up. I believe “neglected” becomes situational depending on who is doing the remembering. The objective of my dissertation is to locate Donny Hathaway as a central figure in 1970s Soul music, to understand his growing influence over contemporary artists, and his musical legacy. I used Stuart Hall’s “representation” as my overarching theoretical framework. I wanted a theory that would be fluid enough to be relevant in the different phases of Donny Hathaway’s musical career. By using representation I was able to identify and understand the musical influences on Donny Hathaway.

1974 UK Record Releases by Date This is a list of all UK 45 singles and EP’s found on the 45 cat website and any new release sheets as of the 25/10/16. Generally records that don't have a full release are not included. Some spoken word only records are not listed, plus “story” ones. Records that would have had a specific week when they were first released, but which dates have not been found, but are known to have been issued on an actual month are included at the end of each weekly listing for the month in question. Numbers in red indicate ownership on 45 cat for those with 5 or more. In some cases, such as chart hits, the number of “wants” is added on. Caution should be noted with ownership figure, as the record might have only been available as a promo record that wasn’t issued to the public. These however will be popular with collectors of records. If it is known to be never issued to the public, what is called on the 45 Cat site as a “stock” record. Then that will not be included. In some cases records by well known acts were never issued as “stock” and some of these have been included, but such records are shown as “promo only”. They are included to show that the record couldn’t have made the charts in 1974. At least as a UK issue! Records that made the charts of the time are only stated where no specific week has been found or if a chart record fails to score 5 ownership indications - indicated by the term hit.
