Shag Rag November 2012

Shag Rag November 2012 Vol. XVIII, No. Dedicated to the Preservation of the Carolina Shag and Beach Music PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by Dave Bushey Big crowds! That’s what we’re seeing at The Elk’s Lodge every Wednesday. Lots of new faces. And lots of returning faces. A nice, large dance floor. Good food. Good music. Good dancing. Great friends! What more could a person ask for? Congratulations to Joan McKinney, NVSC’s newest PRO and her partner, Tom Edwards. And Cathy Metcalf and Vaughn Royal, too, who won their CSA contest in Beckley, WV last month, continuing their advancement in the Competitive Shaggers Association. Many MANY hours of practice and choreography are dedicated by all of these dancers. And, if you don’t know, Nancy Guilliams has been bitten by the competitive ‘bug.’ She and Bob Lutz entered the Newcomer Division. They all teach at NVSC! No wonder the weekly dance lessons have been crowded in recent weeks! So, grab that Red Dot dancer and help them practice the moves – and your moves, too! October has been Nominations Month. Many thanks to Jason Potter and the Nominations Committee for calling our membership and finding qualified candidates. It’s now November. And, that means Elections. On November 14th, you will have your opportunity - your duty - to vote for the 2013 Board of Directors. In this Shag Rag are the personally written ‘bio’s’ and photos of the 11 intrepid individuals who have announced their candidacy. Please take the time to read their resumes and thoughts about NVSC. Then, join in the fun on November 14th at The Elk’s Lodge and VOTE! If you can’t make it that Wednesday, you still have an opportunity to vote by returning your absentee ballot. It must be received in the PO Box by November 13th to be counted. And, of course, your membership must be current!! Have you paid your dues? This coming Sunday is one of our biggest Events of the year – the 14th Annual Shag-a-Thon! This year is a special treat as the award-winning Rick Strickland Band is coming to Northern Virginia to help us raise funds for Capital Caring, NoVa’s premier hospice organization. It will be held at The Elk’s Lodge on Sunday, November 4th from 1PM to 5PM. 100% of the Gate will be donated to Capital Caring as well as the very generous donations of our members, family and friends. Come join in the fun! And December is right around the corner. NVSC’s Annual Holiday Party is December 1st at the Kingstowne Snyder Community Center. We’ve celebrated the season there for several years and have had a great time! Our DJ this year is none other than Betty Brown, from Charleston, SC! It’s also our Annual Toys for Tots Drive. The Marines wowed us last year with their dancing skills. Let’s return the favor and wow them with a zillion unwrapped toys for the kids. This is a Pot Luck Dinner. The Club will supply the turkey, ham and rolls. All you have to bring is an appetizer, a salad or a dessert. There will be a Sign-Up sheet at the front desk at The Elk’s throughout November. It’s a BYOB Event, but remember the local law enforcement are aware of extra socializing that goes on at this time of year!

Northern Virginia Shag Club Page 9 Shag Rag November 2012 BOARD NOMINATIONS

Executive Board Nominees President, Dave Bushey One never knows what’s in store when a challenge is accepted. Last year at this time, you elected me to serve as Presi- dent of your Club. Almost immediately, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors thought about limiting size of dance floors (and therefore dancing). But, NVSC shaggers (you!) stepped up to protest such madness, and they backed off. That’s the character of our members! We’ve traveled through 5 dancing locations in the past 12 months. We’ve stuck together and have now found, … well, The Answer to our search! We love The Elk’s Lodge! It has been a great year for our Club. We’ve Wobbled, studied under Charlie & Jackie, hula’d at The Classic, hunted at our Picnic (no we didn’t, but that’s a nice place, isn’t it!). We’ll be raising funds for Hospice at next week’s Shag-a-Thon, and we’ll top off the year with another fabulous Holiday Party! Thanks to EVERYONE who helped make this a Best Year! And now, I can’t wait to begin working on next year! Take a peek at these very qualified candidates for the 2013 Board. We’re gonna have some fun! Thanks for your support and for your confidence in me. Vice President, Sue Young I am running again for the position of Vice President because I have an undying passion for the shag club. I guess that’s because I am a Pisces which means I love to be around water and music. So when I found this club that played “beach music” it was a match made in heaven. As Vice President I plan to keep us moving forward in a positive direction. I am prepared to continue putting my time and energy into making this club the best it can be for all our members. I would be honored to be elected again this year! Treasurer, Kathy Norris I’ve been a member of the club for three years, and I have enjoyed serving the club as Treasurer during the past two years. I’m running for re-election because I want to help the club expand our membership, and to support new ideas and activities. A native of Northern Virginia, I’ve lived in the area most of my life. I retired recently from a career as a man- ager in the budget and finance field at the International Monetary Fund.

Secretary, Angie Bushey One of the very things I did when I relocated to NoVa from North Carolina in July 2007 was to join NVSC! In my “past life” (pre-NoVa), my career was in banking [all aspects through the years – retail, commercial, lending, trust, investments and securities], and from 2000-2007, I was the first Administrator of the Marine Corps Museum, a start-up non profit based at Camp Lejeune, NC. Among my other duties, I served as Secretary to the Museum’s Board of Directors: pre- pared all official Minutes, drafted the monthly Board meeting agenda, prepared and kept all official correspondence and records, in compliance with all State of NC (and grant money stipulations) and IRS regulations and guidelines. Last year you elected me as Secretary; I would truly appreciate your vote to serve again as Secretary this coming year. As much fun as we’ve had, there are still so many more things we have yet to try! Directors at Large Nominees Bonnie Arms I have been dancing for many decades and am able to dance many different types of dances. But my MOST FAVORITE is the Shag. I became aware of NVSC in 1998 on a chance meeting with Ron Maierhofer at a computer store in Alexan- dria. I noticed his shirt had the “shag dance logo” on it and asked him about it. He told me the club met at Nicks, etc., and the rest is history. I was out of the country for 5 ½ yrs and returned in 2006. I got an apartment not THAT far from Nicks and thought, “YES. Nick’s is close by for me to go Shag Dancing.” Then I found out that the club had moved to Rene’s so I wen there to shag dance. I am respectfully asking that I be elected a Director-at-Large. I have worked for the Federal Government for 25 yrs and in my work duties have held/handled various positions and situations. I held offices of leadership when I was a member of a sorority. I truly enjoy NVSC for several reasons (other than dancing). I enjoy the positiveness the club projects, the friendship(s) that is evident whenever we get together for any function, and have hopefully formed some lasting friendships over the years that I have been a member. As a Director-at-Large, I hope to help further the public awareness of NVSC, help with whatever project(s) I am asked to work on, and fully support the Board of Directors. So, in keeping with the upcoming Presidential election way of wording things, “I’m Bonnie Arms and I approve this message.”

Northern Virginia Shag Club Page 10 Shag Rag November 2012 Directors at Large Nominees Sharon Geyer Hi NVSC! I'm Sharon Geyer and love being part of this club. I appreciate the ambitious instruction program the club offers week after week. I look forward to joining the wonderful community of friendly dancers every event. I encourage everyone I meet to share the joy of the music, the fun of the dance and the rewards of making good friends. I have bene- fited so much from the experience and would like to contribute to enhancing and expanding the club in 2013.

Mark Hendrickson I’ve been a member of NVSC for six years. During the day, I am a financial and program analyst for a government con- tractor dealing with national airspace system matters. I have served on the boards of several civic and social organiza- tions in numerous positions, including president. As a NVSC board member this year, I have concentrated on internal governance issues for the club. My goals for next year include working with the board to update by NVSC by-laws and increasing our outreach in the community.

Ed Hamer My name is Ed Hamer. I am running for an at-large position on the NVSC Board of Directors. My wife Pam and I are in our second year of membership in the NVSC have thoroughly enjoyed our time as members, learning new shag steps and making new friends. My interest in shag dancing and beach music began in Durham, NC where I was first exposed to Beach Music. A direct result of my fondness for Beach Music is my seven year membership in the CBMA and attend- ing the annual Beach Music Awards Show held annually at the Alabama Theatre in North Myrtle Beach. I have been fortunate to serve as a member of the Board of Directors of a professional services organization and a youth sport organi- zation and will use that experience to support the board in their mission. I hope that you will consider me when you cast your vote. Jack Jones Estelle and I have been club members going on 4 years. Since then, we have enjoyed the wonderful company of our fel- low club members and many activities being offered. Last year, I volunteered to be the webmaster for the club website and got elected as a board member at large. I would like to serve again to contribute in helping the club to continue providing a positive experience for our current and future club members.

Fran Mong I am Fran Mong and I am running for a member-at-large position on the NVSC 2013 Board of Directors. I have been a club member since 2005 and in that time I have chaired and co-chaired the Shag-a-Thon (3 years); co-chaired the Deco- rating Committee for the Capital Shag Classic (2006); chaired and organized the club’s Back to the Future Party; chaired the Hospitality Committee (2007); chaired the club’s lst Mardi-Gras Party; organized and participated in bartending the Free Pour at the Capital Classic (3 years) and have been a member of the Dance Committee for 5 years. In 2007 I served on the Board as a Member at Large, I was the Vice-President for 3 years (2008-2010) and while in that position I chaired the Music Committee (2 years) and also chaired the Music Committee this past year. In the 7 years I’ve been affiliated with the Northern Virginia Shag Club I have made wonderful friends, shared awesome dance experiences in super ven- ues (Fat Harolds, Ducks, Beckley, Fredericksburg Virginia Beach) and spent unlimited hours of time dancing with the most fun people on the planet. I never want these experiences to end..... I hope I can count on your vote. Donna Romito Hi! My name is Donna Romito and I am running for Director-at-Large. I, along with my spouse, John, have been club members since February 2006 and have enjoyed ourselves immensely during this time. In 2006 and 2007, I worked extensively with Fran Mong on the Hospitality Committee, and for 2 years I shared birthday cake duties. I also was a board member for a year and was co-chair of the three-day Classic in 2009 coordinating the efforts of many committees in order to provide our members with an outstanding event. I am anxious to return to the Board and be able to have a hand in the club’s future. I hope to have your support in the upcoming election.

ELECTIONS!: The Northern Virginia Shag Club will hold its annual election for Officers and Directors on Wednesday, November 14, at the Fairfax Elks Lodge. NVSC members in good standing may vote by Absentee Ballot or vote in person on November 14. Your membership must be current to be able to vote.
