SCHOOL SONG

We will be so true to our red white and blue at Sundown, We will always brag and boast, and give a toast to old Sundown, And we will always remember our classmates, The times that made us glad, Just to stand right up and say that we’re from good old Sundown, We will back our team and give our fifteen rahs for old Sundown, And just as long as we live we shall never, No, never forget the school we love so well! S-H-S!

ROUGHNECK FIGHT SONG

Fight, fight, fight, Sundown High! Fight, fight, fight, Sundown High! Fight on, Sundown, to victory! We will back our team loyally! Fight, fight, fight, Sundown High! Fight, fight, fight, Sundown High! We will fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!

Fight on to victory!

Thank you also to the parents, families, fans, coach’s spouses, and most importantly the student-athletes for your time, effort and sacrifices to make Sundown High School the place that it is. The Sundown Coaching Staff appreciates you! Thank you to both teams for another great XC season. The girls had a great invitational season winning all but one invitational meet. That meet, The LCU Rust Busters Relay, was the opening meet and the girls finished 2nd. The girls then reeled off five consecutive invitational victories. The girls then went on to win both the district and regional meets. The girls finished the season with a second place finish at the state championship meet in Round Rock. The senior girls on this team finished their high school XC careers with 4 district championships, 4 regional championships, 2 state championships, and 2 state runners-up finishes. Thank you to all the girls in the program for the hard work and dedication you put into making this season a huge success. Senior girls you have been a special group and you will be greatly missed. The best of luck to each and every one of you. Know that I have an immense amount of love and respect for each and every one of you. Go out into this world and do great things. You have been conditioned for that. The boys had a great invitational season as well. Winning all but one of the invitational meets. That meet was also the first meet of the season, The LCU Rust Busters Relay. The boys finished third in that meet. The boys also went on to reel off five consecutive invitational victories. Then also won the district and regional championships. The boys rounded out the season with a 6th place finish at the state championship meet in Round Rock. The senior boys in this group finished their Sundown XC careers with 4 district championships, 4 regional championships, 2 state championships, a 4th place finish at the state meet, and a 6th place finish at the state meet. Thank you to each runner for your hard work and dedication to the Sundown XC Program. Senior boys you’ve had a great career and great success. You will be missed. We can’t say enough about this group of young men and what they accomplished this year. I’ve never seen a team come together and gel the way this team did the second half of the season. To watch them grow, learn and develop as a team was very rewarding as a coach. Through adversity, injuries, and a tough schedule, these kids fought and clawed their way three rounds deep into the playoffs. Their fight, tenacity and GRIT did not go unnoticed, and will forever be remembered. Use the lessons learned in this season to help you in tough times throughout your life – they will happen! Always be proud of where you come from, always remember who you represent, and never forget, there’s nothing better than being a Sundown Roughneck! Love, Coach Cummings and staff

Wow, what a memorable season!! I’m so grateful and have a full heart when I think of you guys and the journey we were able to be a part of this year. So many great moments stick out-the “Tahoka Thriller,” the “Stamford Collective Effort,” the “Vega Big Time Play Making,” competing in the Regional Finals and Elite 8. But my favorite will be the whole journey. From the first meeting to the Regional Finals, I loved watching you continue to build and get better daily, strengthen the bond and brotherhood, and really started to embrace the idea of Process Over Product. Thank you guys for your commitment to the program. To the Seniors- thank you for leaving a legacy and showing future Roughnecks what the standard is. Your choosing to do what is right, working extremely hard, and fighting daily to get better has been an inspiration to so many people. I’ll leave you guys with this last thought- please remember …… There’s nothing more powerful than a humble person with a servant's heart and a warrior spirit who is driven by a bigger purpose! I love you guys. Pound the Rock, Coach Igo & Coach Lyles

Powerlifters,

The 2020 Sundown Powerlifting teams had an outstanding season and I am so proud that each of you were a part of it. I want to personally thank each of you for your hard work and commitment each day to being the best for yourself and for your teammates. We accomplished so much this season with both Boys and Girls teams. There is nothing more satisfying to a coach than to see a group of kids set goals and then set out each meet to achieve those and then set new ones. The number of personal records (PR’s) that we broke each meet and this season are too many to number and that's a direct reflection of your effort and mental toughness. I am so proud of all the individual and team awards we accomplished together and I am also proud of the manner in which you did it each time we competed. The character and integrity you all displayed at each meet was second to none. I always tell you to leave a place better than what you found it and you certainly did that. I would like to personally thank our 4 Seniors for their contributions to this program. CJ, Blake, Cade and Gavin you have accomplished so much in Powerlifting and I am so proud of each of you. Each of you mean a great deal to me and I am so excited to see what your futures hold. I know you will do GREAT things!! God Bless you all and I love you!

Ladies, We played in 2 tournaments this year. The first tournament of the year was at Muleshoe. It was a cold and windy day, as most tournaments are early in the season, but the girls competed very well to be the first one. For five freshmen to play their first 18 hole tournament I was very excited for the future. Our second, and unfortunately last tournament, was at Meadowbrook on the Canyon Course. It is a tough course, but we had a gorgeous day to play golf. Overall the team placed 2nd and Laura McMinn placed 3rd as an individual. It is discouraging that the season was cut short. We all had hopes of winning a district title and competing at regionals. We will keep those goals for next year with six girls returning on the team and maybe a few more will join in. Golf is a lifetime sport, so ladies, keep playing over the summer and even after you graduate. -Coach J

I can definitely say this was the shortest golf season I have ever been a part of. I do want to thank you guys for coming out to play and being a part of this year's team. I say it every year but it's so true-golf is such a great game and lifetime skill that can teach us so many life lessons if we allow it. All five of you guys being underclassmen makes me excited to work with you guys next year. I encourage you all to go tee it up some this summer and keep tightening up your game. Keep ‘Em Straight!

Team,

I first and foremost want to tell each of you how proud I am of you. Regardless of how your season “could have” gone, I am proud of you. I may be showing my age, but I want to share a quote with you from Celine Dion.

“Life imposes things on you that you can’t control, but you still have the choice of how you’re going to live through this.”

For those of you coming back next year, I hope this situation allows you to come back stronger than ever before. Not necessarily physically but with more GRIT and DETERMINATION. After this is over, you will be forced to decide if you want to go back to “normal” or keep pushing forward. I hope you choose the latter. For you seniors, there are no words I can say to make it all better. The way you choose to live through this can have a bigger impact on your life than you think. It is understandable to be sad but do not get stuck there. Use this to fuel you and go set the world on FIRE. You are all capable of accomplishing great things but the work starts NOW. Make choices every day that take you closer to your goal rather than farther away. The work does not stop because situations are not ideal. How you get the work done is what changes. Set your goals now, and in true tennis fashion, GO TO WORK!

Ladies, To start with, I would like to say how much I have missed you all. I know for a fact that we were going to have a very successful season, with many of you having an opportunity to compete at the Regional Meet as well as the State Meet. Those successes were taken away from you and for that I am very sorry! No one deserves what has happened to each of you. Life is very difficult and at times unfair. There will be many times in your life that you will feel as if you were cheated out of something or didn’t get something that you deserve. Hopefully, the lessons learned over the last month will help you understand just how important each day of your life is. We should never take anything for granted. We are only guaranteed the moment we live in. We should enjoy each day, good and bad, and always accept new challenges. Ladies, you will always remember this bad time in your life, but I hope that you can someday find a positive from it. You will become a better person from going through this storm. I have talked to you many times about being a good person, student, friend, wife, mother, employee or employer, etc.! Be an “UNCOMMON” person and live today to the fullest because that is all we have. I hope we can all learn from this moment. From a personal side of things, I could not have asked for a better group of young ladies to compete for our track team. You all are very respectful and hard working young ladies, and will do anything we ask of you without complaining, even on $ Day! Ha Ha! As a coaching staff, we could not ask for anything else from you. Each one of you is very special in your own way. Continue to work hard and strive for greatness in everything you do. Never let anything or anyone define who you are. Be UNCOMMON! Hakuna Matata! With Love, Coach Keys

Hey guys,

Needless to say, the last couple of months have been very unique and difficult. We find ourselves attempting to comprehend something that has not happened on this planet in 100 years, a viral pandemic. My hope is that during this time you have found ways to stay mentally, physically, and emotionally healthy. Of all the important things in life, these three rank at the top. Exercise, a daily routine, eating well, drinking water, and finding ways to be in community in a safe way are of the utmost importance. Unfortunately, there is not a whole lot for me to say about this year’s boys track team. We only attended one meet, New Deal, and there were many of you that were not able to attend this meet for various reasons. I think it is a tribute to what we have built in Sundown that we are able to be involved in many activities and still compete at a high level in all of them. It was my full expectation that our track team this year would have evolved into a highly competitive unit capable of winning the District and Area Meets. Additionally, I think we could have ‘made noise’ at the Regional Meet in Levelland. However, this was not to be. I regret, for your sake, that we were not able to lace up our spikes and compete. I know you guys would have made the Sundown community proud. I am proud to be your track coach, among other things, and I look forward to continuing to build, with you guys leading the way, the Sundown track legacy. As we move forward into the summer months and start to think about our next school year, I leave you with this quote:

‘Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms--to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.’  Victor Frankl

You have full control over how you choose to approach the time in front of you. I look forward to working with you guys next year!

Roughettes,

I am so proud of how well y’all did this year even if it was cut short. From the first day we had practice y’all grew more and more as a team. Having grown as a team really shows on the field because y’all were able to trust each other more. We had a good run this year just wish I could have seen how much more growth y’all had in you this year. I have a feeling that some great things were going to be done on the field.

Some of y’all it was a less than perfect end to your career, but I have a pretty good feeling that you will do just fine in the ultimate game of life. Just keep your head down and don’t get discouraged when things don’t go your way. Keep working hard and great things will come.

Sincerely, Coach Robinson

I wish that I was here talking about how great the season was going and about us going to the third round of the playoffs. I’m sorry that this happened to you. You're a great group of guys. I had been looking forward to this season for a long time. I know that you had too, along with your parents. We were looking forward to the potential of going to Round Rock. That was the dream and now we’re left wondering what could have been. In all my years of coaching both softball and baseball have I ever been around a group that was so dedicated to the sport. Baseball is a sport of repetition and sometimes it can get monotonous. But you guys, you enjoyed the grind. The thing that I will miss most is our time in the cage. There was so much learning going on and it was fun for me to watch you guys figure things out. For you younger guys, I hope that you will carry on what our seniors have started. Parents, I interviewed several players prior to the season and the thing that several of the young men talked about was leaving a legacy behind. Several of you talked about this team being like a family and not just breaking out to it. But meaning it! Family goes through great time’s together and tough times together. Regardless of the way this season was cut short, I want you to know that your legacy will remain. We will never know what could have happened during this season. I will continue to wonder and think about it as I often do. But I do know this. Each and every one of you that belonged to this team and this program is going to be successful in some way. I’m not worried about any of you because I know that life has bigger and better things for each of you. Life isn't fair. But we have shared all kinds of success and if we can handle the good times then we can handle this. Each of you know that I will be there for you and if you ever want to talk baseball come find me. I love each and every one of you and good luck in your next endeavors. Thanks, Kevin
