Method:The study was conducted in the maleo bird conservation area of PT. Panca Amara Utama in Uso Village, Batui District, Banggai Regency, Central Sulawesi Province, from August 2016 to December 2018, by using 10 1-day-old maleo birds. Variables observed included cloaca morphology, macrocephalon and estrogen hormone concentration. Results:The cloaca of Maleo birds has a difference. The difference is in the protrusion on the top of the cloaca. The male Maleo birds have a protrusion in the cloaca while the females do not have it. Organs in the form of protrusion in the cloaca are thought to be a sign of male sex. There are differences in shape and size between the male and female macrocephalon, the males have about 3.96 ± 011 cm width in average with rounded shape while the females have about 3.20 ± 0.10 cm width in average with oval shape. -

The triumphs, challenges and failures of young North Island brown kiwi (Apteryx mantelli): a study of behaviour, growth, dispersal and mortality Stephanie Walden A thesis in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Zoology at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand Alexandra Louise Wilson 2013 i ii Abstract North Island brown kiwi (NIBK, Apteryx mantelli), an endemic New Zealand species, are estimated to have declined by 90% from pre-human colonisation numbers. Currently, at least 60% of mortality is attributed to introduced mammalian predators, namely stoats (Mustela erminea) preying on chicks. Therefore, conservation effort focuses on predator trapping/killing, and hatching and rearing NIBK chicks in captivity and releasing them back into the wild. These efforts are resulting in increased recruitment of chicks into populations. However, little is known about the biology and behaviour of NIBK chicks in the wild and how this may affect management of these populations. Consequently, the aim of this study was to examine the ecology of young wild NIBK in a natural high density population with reduced predator diversity on Ponui Island. More specifically, the goal was to determine their growth rates, behaviour around the natal nest, dispersal and mortality, and how these factors may be influenced by environmental variables. During the 2010 - 2011 and 2011 - 2012 breeding seasons 29 young NIBK were observed from hatching until mortality or the end of 2012. -

Although the previous day had been glorious sunshine, today was thick, low cloud and drizzle causing the flight to be cancelled. This was exceptionally annoying as exactly the same thing had happened on my last tour (to PNG in August) causing incredible disruption and vast extra costs to reschedule. Even more annoying was that these were the first times ever in 12 years of living on Islay that this had ever happened. I nipped back home and quickly contacted airlines, Ken (already on his way and expecting to meet up with me in Dubai) and of course the ground agents. I'd just got everything rescheduled for the same flights tomorrow at considerable cost (£500+) before it was time for me to get the next plane off the island. It was tempting to wait until the morning flight tomorrow and have an extra night at home, but it was also tempting fate in case the same should happen tomorrow. I flew off in weather that had turned into bright sunshine and got into a hotel in Glasgow for the night to await tomorrow's departure. Others in the group were hopefully more on schedule and heading towards Indonesia. September 20: Out From Glasgow To Dubai: My Emirates flight to Dubai set off on time and arrived about midnight local time. -

Sulawesi Dwarf Kingfisher Tour Summary Surrounded to the north by the Philippines, to the east by New Guinea, the south by Australia and the west by Borneo, the two larger islands of Sulawesi and Halmahera form a significant part of central Indonesia’s nearly 15000 islands. We recorded over 100 endemics of a total trip list of 254 species, thus emphasising that this is certainly one of the endemic hotspots of the world! Our tour started off with an early morning visit to the limestone crags of Karaenta Forest, Sulawesi. Departing Makassar, we set off early to maximise our limited time as we had a flight to catch in the early afternoon. Arriving just as the sun’s first rays hit the treetops, we were soon enjoying wonderful sightings of stunning Grey-sided and Yellow-sided Flowerpeckers. You could actually feel the sense of excitement in the air as we notched up our first endemics. After enjoying our tea and coffee, we then quickly picked up our main target, the rather localised endemic Black-ringed Whit-eye, which showed splendidly as it sat just in front of us gobbling down some ripe fruit. -
Southeast Asia Mega Tour: Singapore/Borneo/Peninsular Malaysia/Halmahera/Sulawesi
Southeast Asia Mega Tour: Singapore/Borneo/Peninsular Malaysia/Halmahera/Sulawesi August 9th-September 30th, 2013 This seven-week tour took us to some of Southeast Asia’s most amazing birding spots, where we racked up some mega targets, saw some amazing scenery, ate some lovely cuisine, and generally had a great time birding. Among some of the fantastic birds we saw were 11 species of pitta, including the endemic Ivory-breasted and Blue-banded Pittas, 27 species of night birds, including the incomparable Satanic Nightjar, Blyth’s, Sunda and Large Frogmouths, and Moluccan Owlet-Nightjar, 14 species of cuckooshrikes, 15 species of kingfishers, and some magical gallinaceous birds like Mountain Peacock- Pheasant, Crested Fireback, and the booming chorus of Argus Pheasant. 13 species of Hornbills were seen, including great looks at Helmeted, White-crowned, Plain-pouched, and Sulawesi. Overall we saw 134 endemic species. Singapore The tour started with some birding around Singapore, and at the Central Catchment Reservoir we started off well with Short-tailed Babbler, Chestnut-bellied Malkoha, Banded Woodpecker, Van Hasselt’s Sunbird, and loads of Pink-necked Green Pigeon. Bukit Batok did well with Straw-headed Bulbul, Common Flameback, and Laced Woodpecker, as well as a particularly obliging group of White- crested Laughingthrush. Borneo We then flew to Borneo, where we began with some local birding along the coast, picking up not only a number of common species of waterbirds but also a mega with White-fronted (Bornean) Falconet. Highlights • Luckily escaping the previous extensive occlusion of Anaso track due to terrorist actions. Anaso track opened up during our staying. • A fruit-eating Tonkean Macaque at Lore Lindu. • Great views of hunting Eastern Grass Owls over paddies around Wuasa on three different evenings. • Seeing a canopy-perched Sombre Pigeon above the pass at Anaso track. • Flocks of Malias and a few Sulawesi Thrushes. • No less than three different Blue-faced Parrotfinches. • Purple-bearded Bee-eaters along Anaso track. • Finding Javan Plover at Palu salt pans, to our knowledge a significant range extension, previously known from Sulawesi mainly in Makassar-area. • Sulawesi Hornbill at Paneki valley. • Sulawesi Streaked Flycatcher at Paneki valley, a possibly new location for this recently described species. • Two days at Gunung Lompobattang in the south: Super-endemic Lompobattang Flycatcher, Black-ringed White-eye, and not-so-easy diminutive Pygmy Hanging Parrot. Logistics With limited time available this was a dedicated trip to Central and Southern Sulawesi. Jonas and Mathias had the opportunity to extend the trip for another week in the North while I had to return home. The trip was arranged with help from Nurlin at Palu-based Malia Tours ([email protected]). Originally we had planned to have a full board trip to Lore Lindu and also include seldom-visited Saluki in the remote western parts of Lore Lindu, a lower altitude part of Lore Lindu where Maleo occurs. -
The Avifauna of Lambusango Forest Reserve, Buton Island, South-East Sulawesi, with Additional Sightings from Southern Buton
FORKTAIL 28 (2012): 107–112 The avifauna of Lambusango Forest Reserve, Buton Island, south-east Sulawesi, with additional sightings from southern Buton T. E. MARTIN, D. J. KELLY, N. T. KEOGH, D. HERIYADI, H. A. SINGER & G. A. BLACKBURN Lambusango Forest Reserve occupies a large area of south-central Buton, the largest attendant island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Buton is located off Sulawesi’s south-eastern peninsula and remains poorly known ornithologically. Bird surveys were undertaken in the reserve over eight eight-week long research seasons between June and August in 1999, 2001–2003, 2005, and 2008–2010. Variable radius circular- plot point counts were the primary census method, conducted as part of a long-term biodiversity monitoring programme in the reserve, although data were also collected from 840 mist-netting hours and approximately 2,560 hours of observational data. In total, 79 species were detected in the reserve, including 37 regional endemics (46.8% of the total avifaunal community) and four species considered by the IUCN to be globally threatened or Near Threatened. Additionally, a further 60 species (including two more Near Threatened species) were recorded in various habitats around southern Buton that were not detected in Lambusango Reserve, giving a total of 139 species records for the island. We believe that 51 of these species represent previously unpublished records for Buton. We present here a full account of our records from Lambusango Reserve and southern Buton, with additional details provided for threatened and Near Threatened species and new records of endemics. INTRODUCTION Lambusango Forest Reserve (5°10’–5°24’S 122°43’–123°07’E) is a 65,000 ha expanse of uninhabited tropical monsoon forest, Buton (formerly referred to as Butung) is the largest of Sulawesi’s encompassing much of south-central Buton. -

Biodiversitas 12: 171-176. Over exploitation of maleo bird eggs has become the main problem. In addition, habitat demolition and fragmentation have also caused decrease in maleo bird population. This research aimed to know the effectiveness of hatching pattern to produce maleo breeding, studying breeding pattern of maleo bird through hatching approaches of feed quality and temperature adjustment, and studying maleo bird respond towards caring pattern adjustment by measuring plasticity value. There were two phases in this research. The first phase was hatching by using modified incubator. The other one was the caring of the breeding from the result of hatching through feed pattern management using protein and energy balancing. The results of the research indicated that the hatching success was 65%; however, life endurance of the birds from birth to one month of age was only 40%. Their growth showed sufficiently high increase after passing critical period in their body-weight based on feeding pattern containing 21% of protein that was 64.93 g and 62.59 g for maleo in Lore Lindu National Park (LLNP) and Bangkiriang Wildlife Reserve (BWR), respectively. -

Conservation of Endangered, Endemic Megapode Macrocephalon maleo S. Muller, 1846 in Lore Lindu National Park, Indonesia: Strategy in Selecting Nesting Pit Asya Putri, Herditha (School: Al-Azhar Mandiri Palu Senior High School) Triana, Nabila (School: Al-Azhar Mandiri Palu Senior High School) As a students from Celebes (Indonesia), we are interested about an endemic bird which are called Maleo. Maleo senkawor (Macrocephalon maleo S. muller, 1846) is an endemic animal from Celebes that include in the list of bird as an endangered category by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Maleo is monotypic, so its only found in Celebes especially in Lore Lindu National Park, which is a protected area and included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves from UNESCO. The objective of the project is to study the ecological behavior, and factor affecting Maleo’s survival for better conservation strategy. The ecological behavior observation was conduted from habitat of Maleo to selecting nesting pit for breeding. As a burrow nester, Maleo make nest hole to place their egg until it hatched in ± 65 days for the chick to strive out to the surface and furthermore will manage their self (precocial) and its need a geothermal resources. The laying egg behavior in leaving the nest hole, frequently makes the eggs threatened from the predators and the hatch failure. The result of research found that Maleo behavior in selecting the nesting pit, which is suitable with their needs and the design of nest hole in some conditions. Temperature for egg nesting appear to be one of critical factors and therefore it is necessary to protect area near the hot spring as nesting pit. -
