A proud DC tradition is restored as writer Mark Waid (52, SUPERGIRL AND THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES) and legendary artists George Pérez (THE NEW TEEN TITANS, CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS) and Bob Wiacek (ORION) put and Green Lantern on the trail of what could be the greatest weapon in the DCU! The trail leads to Ventura, the gambling planet…wanna bet what'll happen if they don't get their hands on the weapon? This issue will feature two covers by George Pérez, Cover A spotlights Batman; Cover B spotlights Green Lantern! The Brave and the Bold. The Brave and the Bold is the title shared by many series published by DC Comics. The first of these was published as an ongoing series from 1955 to 1983. It was followed by mini-series in 1991 and 1999, and was revived as an ongoing title in 2007. The focus of each version of the comic has varied over time but most commonly (and currently) features team-ups of characters from across the DC Universe. Contents. Publication history. Volume 1. The first volume of the series ran for 200 issues from August 1955 to July 1983. Originally, The Brave and the Bold was an anthology series featuring adventure tales from past ages with characters such as the Silent Knight, Viking Prince, Golden Gladiator, and Hood. With issue #25, the series was reinvented as a try-out title for new characters and concepts, starting with the Suicide Squad created by writer and artist . [ 1 ] Editor Julius Schwartz hired writer Gardner Fox and artist Mike Sekowsky to create the of America. The team debuted in The Brave and the Bold #28 (Feb.-March 1960), and after two further appearances in the title, received its own series. [ 2 ] Issues #45 through #49 were devoted to "Strange Sports Stories" combining sport and science-fiction in tales such as "Challenge of the Headless Baseball Team" and "The Man Who Drove Through Time." Strange Sports Stories was later resurrected briefly as a DC Comics title in its own right in 1973, but lasted only six issues. [ 3 ] The teaming of Robin, Kid Flash, and Aqualad in issue #54 (July 1964) by writer Bob Haney and artist Bruno Premiani led to the creation of the Teen Titans. [ 4 ] The three heroes subsequently appeared under the name "Teen Titans" in issue #60 (July 1965) by Haney and artist Nick Cardy and were joined by Wonder Woman's younger sister Wonder Girl in her first appearance. [ 5 ] The Metamorpho character was created by Haney and artist Ramona Fradon in The Brave and the Bold #57 (January 1965). [ 6 ] The series was changed yet again with issue #50 as a team-up title between established characters. The pseudo-science, by DC's standards, was particularly reckless at this time. Starting with issue #59 The Brave & the Bold became, more specifically a Batman team-up book with the Caped Crusader as the book's main focus. [ 7 ] This was due to the popularity of the Batman TV Series which led to the creation of Batmania. After issue #74, The Brave and the Bold was exclusively a Batman team-up title until it ended with issue #200. The title was the first to feature ' version of Batman, [ 8 ] generating fan interest that led to Adams' style defining the modern Batman image to this day. In addition, Adams updated Green Arrow's visual appearance by designing a new costume for the character in issue #85 (Aug.- Sept 1969). [ 9 ] The primary artist for the second half of the run was Jim Aparo, starting with #98 (October-November 1971). The character Nemesis also known as Thomas Tresser, debuted an eight page backup story in issue #166 (September 1980) written by Cary Burkett and drawn by Dan Spiegle. The Tresser character was created by Burkett in 1979 and named for an actor who Burkett was rooming with in New Hampshire. [ 10 ] The title's final issue featured a team-up of the Batmen of Earth-One and Earth-Two and included a preview of the title that replaced The Brave and the Bold in DC's schedule and became Aparo's next regular assignment: Batman and the . [ 11 ] Volume 2 and Flash and Green Lantern: The Brave and the Bold. In December 1991-June 1992, The Brave and the Bold returned as a 6 part mini-series featuring Green Arrow, the Question, and the Butcher. The mini-series was written by Mike Grell and Mike Baron. In October 1999- March 2000, a 6 part mini-series was published starring the Flash and Green Lantern titled Flash and Green Lantern: The Brave and the Bold . This mini-series was written by Mark Waid and Tom Peyer with art by Barry Kitson and Tom Grindberg. A trade paperback of this mini-series was published in 2001 (ISBN 1563897083). The title was used again in 2001 for The Brave and the Bold Annual No. 1 1969 Issue , a one-shot special that reprinted selected Silver Age team-ups in the 1960s-style 80-Page Giant format, as a companion piece to the original comic book series, had an Annual issue been published at that time. Volume 3. DC resurrected the Brave and the Bold title as a second volume on-going series in April 2007. [ 12 ] Deciding that it would be a random team-up book and not a Batman team-up book, the first writer was Mark Waid, who remained on the title for its first sixteen issues. While the first arc, the Lords of Luck, involved Batman in a team-up with Green Lantern Hal Jordan, the story -- tracking down the book of Destiny -- had the two team-up with various others characters as well. The arc featured appearances by Supergirl, Lobo, Blue Beetle, the Legion of Super Heroes, Adam Strange, and the Challengers of the Unknown. The second arc picked up threads from the first, but mainly focused on self-contained stories. After Waid's departure, Marv Wolfman took over for a two part storyline involving Supergirl and Raven battling the son of Triumph, while David Hine and Doug Braithwaite did a four issue arc on the book featuring Hal Jordan and . Dan Jurgens wrote issue #23, featuring Booster Gold and Magog. Like Wolfman's run, though this time featuring team-ups between DC heroes and the characters of Milestone Media. Writer Matt Wayne and artist Howard Porter collaborated on a team-up between Static and Black Lightning, Adam Beechen and Roger Robinson did an issue about Hardware and Blue Beetle, and the final Milestone issue was a team-up between Xombi and the Spectre done by John Rozum and Scott Hampton. J. Michael Straczynski and artist Jesus Saiz took over the book in September 2009 with issue #27, and featured a team-up between Batman and Dial H For Hero. The initial plan for Straczynski's run was supposed to be similar to the Milestone issues, with the book being used to the Red Circle Comics characters that had been licensed from Archie Comics. This idea was ultimately scrapped. Following the first issue, Straczynski wrote team-ups between Barry Allen and Blackhawk, the and the Atom, Hal Jordan and , Batman and Brother Power, Aquaman and Etrigan, and a team-up between Barbara Gordon, Wonder Woman, and Zatanna that served as a companion piece to Alan Moore's Batman: The Killing Joke graphic novel. Leading off the series is the classic team-up of Batman and Green Arrow from B&B #85, written by Bob Haney and featuring the art of longtime BRAVE & BOLD penciller Neal Adams. These masterworks from the past are surrounded by an all-new wraparound cover by one of today's best artists, Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez. Cover price $2.50. The first volume of the 2000s revival of The Brave and the Bold has some tenuous ties to Gaiman's Sandman : Destiny of the Endless appears here (though he was the one Endless who had been established before Gaiman came along). Destiny has subsequently appeared in his own spin-off, gotten a story of his own in Endless Nights , and even popped up in Lucifer . Before I get to Destiny's role, though, I want to talk about The Lords of Luck as a whole. It's fun. It's amazingly fun. I wouldn't say that all superhero comics should be all fun all the time, but given their subject matter, there's often a surprising lack of the stuff. Well, not here: Mark Waid manages to give us a story that takes in the length and breadth of the DC universe, showing off just how awesome it is in almost all regards. The old Brave and the Bold comics was, I believe, one-and-done superhero team-ups; Waid hits the perfect middleground between that and the sprawling six-plus-part stories of the modern day by making The Lords of Luck a succession of team-ups that are all one story, meaning characters come and go from the story in rapidfire fashion. But Waid's a smart writer, and I was rarely confused, unlike with the deep levels of referencing going on in JSA: Mixed Signals . We start with a team-up between Batman and Green Lantern, who discover that something powerful is after two weapons, and they split up to pursue each weapon. Green Lantern and Supergirl head to a casino planet following one. This is my first exposure to the 2000s Supergirl after Jeph Loeb's mediocre introduction of her, and (perhaps obviously) Waid writes her a heckuva a lot better; she's smart but seventeen, and wins you over even when she does stupid stuff. Then we get Batman teaming up with Blue Beetle, Supergirl teaming up with Lobo(!), and Batman teaming up with the Legion of Super-Heroes (!!). Each of these is more awesome than the last. I always enjoy a bit of Lobo, and the banter between him and Supergirl never stops being entertaining. Even better, though, is watching Batman one-up the Legion of Super-Heroes; one should never give Batman a flight ring, apparently. I was laughing all the way through. It's a very real love letter to the DC universe and all the marvelous strangeness it contains. This is how you use continuity to your advantage. It helps that Waid treats his characters like people with personalities, not datapoints with histories. It helps even more that Waid is paired with the legendary George Pérez on art. Pérez's art is always great; he has storytelling skills that are rarely matched in modern comics. His pages are dense and eventful in the best way, and his splash pages have real impact. His characters are as fun- looking as the story, and he even manages to restrict himself to just one Supergirl panty-shot. (Sigh.) Destiny himself is not exactly the imperturbable Endless we usually see; here, he's distracted and amnesiac, having given up control of the Book of Destiny that contains all history. He seems a little less inscrutable when he talks to Lobo and Supergirl as opposed to Dream and Lucifer, but watching Lobo drive his motorcycle through Destiny's garden is worth the price of admission. The Brave and the Bold is kind of comic I'd wish I'd read when I was a kid, and that I hope my kids will read one day. I'm going to read the next volume because it too has some Sandman connections, but I'm looking forward even more to my eventual readthrough of the whole series. Cool stuff.
