Defense Sec- retary Ashton Carter has suspended collection for the moment, but the issue remains unresolved and the debt to the government is partly unpaid. There is frequently a feeling on the part of Americans that “government” is incompetent and heartless. There is clear justification for that line of thought in this piece of malevolence toward these California National Guard members. If one compares what government is doing in this sit- uation with the elevated level of rhetoric being emitted by candidates for office about America’s warriors in the political campaign, it is simply disgusting. Congress must fix this when it comes back from its election vacation, on an urgent basis. Soldiers who have already paid should get their money back, promptly, in full. This issue should be on top of Carter’s list, rather than some new war. The above editorial appeared in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Thursday, Oct. 27.

By Katie Morrison ITEM STAFF Lynn Tech competes in a league where its closest rivals are in Chelsea, Wake eld and Middleton, and that includes teams from as far north as Tyngsborough. As such, it’s hard for the Tigers to get the constant recognition as schools whose leagues are comprised mainly of teams concentrated in the immediate Lynn area. Nev- ertheless, when it comes to cross country and track, Tech is working on something spe- cial. Saturday, the Tech boys cross country team won the Commonwealth Conference title for the second year in a row at Essex Technical High School in Danvers with 29 points, topping second-place Essex Tech.
