We write to urge you to help reverse this misguided decision and to reinstate the initial aim of these provisions: to protect these essential workers who put their lives in danger every day in order to feed our nation. As Californians, you know how crucial our agriculture industry is to the nation, and that farmworkers are both essential members in our communities as well as indispensable to our national food security. Agriculture, labor and congressional leaders thoughtfully collaborated to ensure that H.R. 133 safeguards our agricultural workers against COVID-19. The bill was signed into law and included provisions to purchase and distribute agricultural products and to provide grants and loans to protect agricultural workers from COVID-19. However, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), at the behest of the Trump Administration, on January 4, 2021 announced it would spend $1.5 billion on a fifth round of the Farmers to Families Food Box Program and has made no provisions available to protect farmworkers against COVID-19. Farmworkers have borne the brunt of this pandemic on multiple fronts and this latest omission of protections for farmworkers will only spawn further health and economic devastation.

The California State Legislature finished out our second year of the 2019-2020 legislative term with significant paring to our legislative bills. While 2020 did not allow the Assembly Aging and Long-Term Care Committee to analyze much of the legislation introduced earlier in the year, we were proud to advance legislation earlier in the term relating to Alzheimers and dementia caregiving and service delivery; establishing a No Wrong Door System; elder abuse prevention and victim support; housing; fall prevention; and framework to support the Master Plan on Aging. We were deeply involved in the fight to proposed budget cuts to seniors and people living with disabilities this year.

    2020 U.S. Political Engagement Policy and Statement This U.S. Political Engagement Policy and Statement describes the two types of political engagement by the Company. The first is lobbying, which includes both direct communications with government officials by the Company as well as advocacy by other organizations (i.e., indirect lobbying) that receive financial support from the Company. The second is campaign contributions to candidates for elected office, political parties, political committees, and other organizations that use the contributions for campaign-related purposes. The Company’s policy is to participate in public policymaking by informing government officials about our positions on issues significant to the Company and our customers.
