  • The Role of Poetry Readings in Dispelling the Notion That Urdu Is a Muslim Language
International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Vol. 4, No. 10; August 2014 The Role of Poetry Readings in Dispelling the Notion that Urdu is a Muslim Language Hiba Mirza G-1, Maharani Bagh New Delhi – 110 065 India Abstract Looking at the grim scenario of the future of Urdu in India, and its overwhelming identification with a particular community (i.e., Muslims) have indeed contributed in creating a narrow image of sectarian interests. However, the concern of the intellectuals about its declining trend, seems to be melting, if we take the case of Mushaira (poetic symposium). Through interviews with both the organisers and the attendees of Delhi Mushairas I collected a serious of impressions that speak to the role of a Mushaira in advancing a cosmopolitan, rather than a communal image of Urdu. Uniting people through poetry, mushairas temporarily dissolve differences of caste, creed and religion. Keywords: Urdu, Narrow image, declining, communal, cosmopolitan Urdu hai mera naam, main Khusro ki paheli Main Meer ki humraaz hun, Ghalib ki saheli My name is Urdu and I am Khusro’s riddle I am Meer’s confidante and Ghalib’s friend Kyun mujhko banate ho ta’assub ka nishana, Maine to kabhi khudko musalma’an nahin maana Why have you made me a target of bigotry? I have never thought myself a Muslim Dekha tha kabhi maine bhi khushiyon ka zamaana Apne hi watan mein hun magar aaj akeli I too have seen an era of happiness But today I am an orphan in my own country - Iqbal Ashar - (Translation by Rana Safvi) 1.0 Introduction India is a pluralistic society.

  • 1. Letter to Children of Bal Mandir
    1. LETTER TO CHILDREN OF BAL MANDIR KARACHI, February 4, 1929 CHILDREN OF BAL MANDIR, The children of the Bal Mandir1are too mischievous. What kind of mischief was this that led to Hari breaking his arm? Shouldn’t there be some limit to playing pranks? Let each child give his or her reply. QUESTION TWO: Does any child still eat spices? Will those who eat them stop doing so? Those of you who have given up spices, do you feel tempted to eat them? If so, why do you feel that way? QUESTION THREE: Does any of you now make noise in the class or the kitchen? Remember that all of you have promised me that you will make no noise. In Karachi it is not so cold as they tried to frighten me by saying it would be. I am writing this letter at 4 o’clock. The post is cleared early. Reading by mistake four instead of three, I got up at three. I didn’t then feel inclined to sleep for one hour. As a result, I had one hour more for writing letters to the Udyoga Mandir2. How nice ! Blessings from BAPU From a photostat of the Gujarati: G.N. 9222 1 An infant school in the Sabarmati Ashram 2 Since the new constitution published on June 14, 1928 the Ashram was renamed Udyoga Mandir. VOL.45: 4 FEBRUARY, 1929 - 11 MAY, 1929 1 2. LETTER TO ASHRAM WOMEN KARACHI, February 4, 1929 SISTERS, I hope your classes are working regularly. I believe that no better arrangements could have been made than what has come about without any special planning.

  • Afghan Music in Australia John Baily*
BAILY, John (2010), “Afgan music in Australia”, in CÔRTE-REAL, Maria de São José (ed.), Migrações Journal - Special Issue Music and Migration, October 2010, no. 7, Lisbon: ACIDI, pp. 157-176 Afghan music in Australia John Baily* Abstract Based on research carried out in Melbourne and Sydney in 2009, this paper discusses Afghan migration to Australia, the emergen- ce of the multicultural society, the civic promotion of the Afghan Bazaar Precinct in Dandenong (Melbourne), the genres of Afghan music performed in Australia, with brief biographies of some of the musicians, and a survey of CDs produced in Australia. The pa- per concludes that the Afghan-Australian community (less than 25,000 overall) is too small to support a fully-fledged Afghan mu- sic profession. The result is a vigorous amateur music scene cate- ring for a community of music lovers. The work of three contem- porary Australian composers influenced by Afghan music is also discussed, to show how the culture of this immigrant community has enriched Australian culture. Keywords Afghanistan, Australia, multiculturalism, recordings, professiona- lism, keyboards. * Emeritus Professor of Ethnomusicology, Head of the Afghanistan Music Unit, Department of Music, Goldsmiths, University of London ([email protected]) Migrações _ #7 _ October 2010 157 Afghan music in Australia John Baily Introduction My research on the music of Afghanistan began in the 1970s, with two years of eth- nomusicological fieldwork, most of it in the provincial city of Herat, and to a lesser extent the capital, Kabul. My research in Herat was wide-ranging, looking into the performance of various genres: urban and rural; folk, popular and art; vocal and ins- trumental; traditional and modern; professional and amateur; female and male; and also at various forms of religious singing that did not fall clearly into the category of music, such as Sufi zikr, Shiah lamentations and Quranic recitation.
