It is divided into two sections. In the first section appropriate terms and concepts are defined in order to afford accuracy and precision in the discussion of complicated relationships encompassed by the database. This includes relationships between accused witches and their accusers, different accused witches, people and prosecutorial processes, and cultural elements of witchcraft belief and the processes through which they were documented. The second section is a general description of how the database is organised. Please see the document ‘Description of Database Fields’ for a full discussion of every field in the database, including its meaning, use and relationships to other fields and/or tables.

SCOTTISH GENEALOGIST CUMULATIVE INDEX 1953 - 2005 Compiled by Dr. James D. Floyd John & Margaret Kinnaird D. Richard Torrance and Other unidentified members of the Society Copyright The Scottish Genealogy Society 2007 The Scottish Genealogy Society Library & Family History Centre 15 Victoria Terrace Edinburgh EH1 2JL Tel: 0131 220 3677 http://www.scotsgenealogy.com SCOTTISH GENEALOGIST Index Volumes 1-52 1953-2005 INTRODUCTION Over the existence of the Scottish Genealogy Society indexes to the Scottish Genealogist have been published at regular intervals and distributed to those who were members of the Society at the time of publication. The index to the first 28 volumes was one large index with no sub-divisions. As a great number of queries were published it was decided to include these in a section of their own from volume 29 onwards. From volume 41 the index was split into the following sections: General index; Article Titles; Contributors; Reviews; Work in Progress; Queries. A separate section for Illustrations was included in the index for volumes 45-52. NUMBERING There has not been uniformity in the numbering format used by the different compilers of the indexes. A volume covers one year during which 4 journals were issued usually in March, June, September and December. In the current index these have been harmonised to follow the most commonly used pattern: Volume number - Roman numerals capitals Journal number - Roman numerals lower case Page number - Arabic numerals Example: XXXIX.iv.116 -Volume 39, December issue, page 116. Page numbering Page numbering in the journals has not been consistent over the years.

His widow, Princess Mary, was then compelled to marry the elderly Lord Hamilton who was created Earl of Arran and thus made the Hamiltons next in line to the throne rather than the Boyds. The line of Boyds did however continue through the second son of Lord Boyd and the title was restored in The 10th Lord Boyd was made Earl of Kilmarnock by Charles II in but less than a century later the title was stripped for the part played by the 4th Earl in the Jacobite rebellion. The title was passed through the female line to the Earl's second son who inherited the title of the Earl of Erroll and adopted the name of Hay. He was succeeded in by the 7th Lord Kilmarnock. An origin in the Isle of Bute 'Bod' in Gaelic has also been promoted. Their reputed Anglo- Norman ancestor was Simon, younger brother of Walter the first High Steward, and the fess-chequey in the Boyd arms might support this origin. They supported Bruce in the struggle for Independence and following Bannockburn in Sir Robert Boyd was granted the lands around Kilmarnock lately forfeited by Balliol. Robert Boyd became Lord Boyd in and the family enjoyed a brief ascendency.

FOREWORD WHEN the life of a people is perfectly sound and wholesome, one of the chief sources of their inspiration, for the manly and honourable conduct of life, is what is best in the achievements and traditions of their fathers. The epic poet sets forth those achievements and traditions in an idealized light, and makes them beautiful and attractive for the imitation of the worthier type of youth, to whom a noble and honourable life is thus made to appeal as the right thing to strive for. But the bare, dry facts of history may also speak with a message, equally clear and inspiring, to him who is gifted with sufficient imagination to see them in their true significance. The Roll of Honour recorded on the War Memorial, which is now so prominent a feature of almost every village and parish through out the King's dominions, consists usually of nothing more than a bare list of names.
