Bob Garfield, author of “The Chaos Scenario” (Stielstra Publishing) Appearance at Miami Book Fair International 2009 PACHTER: Hi, I’m Richard Pachter from the Miami Herald. I’m the Business Books Columnist for Business Monday. I’m going to introduce Chris and Bob. Christopher Kenneally responsible for organizing and hosting programs at Copyright Clearance Center. He’s an award-winning journalist and author of Massachusetts 101: A History of the State, from Red Coats to Red Sox. He’s reported on education, business, travel, culture and technology for The New York Times, The Boston Globe, the LA Times, the Independent of London and other publications. His articles on blogging, search engines and the impact of technology on writers have appeared in the Boston Business Journal, Washington Business Journal and Book Tech Magazine, among other publications. He’s also host and moderator of the series Beyond the Book, which his frequently broadcast on C- SPAN’s Book TV and on Book Television in Canada. And Chris tells me that this panel is going to be part of a podcast in the future. So we can look forward to that. To Chris’s left is Bob Garfield. After I reviewed Bob Garfield’s terrific book, And Now a Few Words From Me, in 2003, I received an e-mail from him that said, among other things, I want to have your child. This was an interesting offer, but I’m married with three kids, and Bob isn’t quite my type, though I appreciated the opportunity and his enthusiasm. After all, Bob Garfield is a living legend. -

The Rise and Impact of Fact-Checking in U.S. Campaigns by Amanda Wintersieck A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Approved April 2015 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Kim Fridkin, Chair Mark Ramirez Patrick Kenney ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2015 ABSTRACT Do fact-checks influence individuals' attitudes and evaluations of political candidates and campaign messages? This dissertation examines the influence of fact- checks on citizens' evaluations of political candidates. Using an original content analysis, I determine who conducts fact-checks of candidates for political office, who is being fact- checked, and how fact-checkers rate political candidates' level of truthfulness. NEWS HEARST ELEVATES POLITICAL COVERAGE TO NEW LEVEL 12 Minutes Daily in 2012 for 150 Hours Total in Month Prior to Election Launches Election App, New “Commitment 2012 Investigates” Series And Partnership with PolitiFact NEW YORK, NY, January 3, 2012 – Hearst Television Inc., parent of one of the country’s largest television station groups, will once again devote significant resources to news coverage of the political process, through a project called Commitment 2012. The project marks a renewal of the Company’s biannual election-coverage efforts, which began with Commitment 2000 and which have earned a Peabody Award and multiple USC Annenberg Walter Cronkite Awards, including six group-wide honors. Hearst Television owns the leading television stations in Des Moines, Iowa (KCCI- TV), and Manchester, New Hampshire (WMUR-TV) -- the two markets where the 2012 presidential campaign begins with the Iowa caucuses, on January 3, and the New Hampshire primary, on January 10. Commitment 2012 will once again involve an intensified effort at the Company’s 25 news-producing TV stations, and on their respective local websites and mobile sites, to provide comprehensive local TV news coverage of national, state and local election campaigns on-air, online and via mobile devices. A cornerstone feature of Commitment 2012 will be “12 in 12” – a pledge of a minimum 12 minutes’ airtime for daily political news and candidate-discourse coverage per weekday and, where possible, on weekends, in the 30 days leading up to the Primary and General elections at each of its news stations. This represents a 20% increase – or some 25 additional hours for a total of 150 hours group-wide over the 30-day period – from the 10 minutes daily which Hearst first pledged in 2006. -
Increasing National and International News Coverage About Faculty
Increasing national and international news coverage about faculty research, student achievement and innovative programs is one of the ways University Communications seeks to raise the profile of Florida State University. University Communications’ News & Research Communications staff, in collaboration with communicators across campus, pitches story ideas, provides experts lists, writes news releases and distributes video content for use by producers and reporters all over the world. Faculty experts Kevin Beaver, Glen Doran, Arturo Figueroa, Dean Grubbs, Markus Huettel, Munir Humayun, David Landau, Deana Rohlinger, Samuel Staley and Angelina Sutin were among those featured by some of the top media outlets in the United States and abroad in August. Stories featuring them were published or broadcast by media outlets including Detroit Free Press, Los Angeles Times, NBC News, National Geographic and U.S. News & World Report. There were more than 1,170 media placements in August, and about 15 percent of those were directly generated by media relations strategies. An analysis of the media coverage is as follows: Focus Summary Geographic Summary n 35% research/faculty n 55% national n 35% college, unit or student focus n 25% regional and local n 30% other features, issues n 20% international management and/or editorials Social Media § FSU gained 2,331 new Facebook fans in August; there was an average engagement rate of 8.2% (compared to a 1% industry average) while the high quality engagement rate was 2.2% The total reach for the month was more than 1.1 million users. § Twitter (@floridastate) increased by 909 followers. § The month saw more than 10 million total impressions across Facebook and Twitter, 16,877 total views via YouTube and 7,940 likes and comments on Instagram. -

The Common Law Powers of the New York State Attorney General
THE COMMON LAW POWERS OF THE NEW YORK STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL Bennett Liebman* The role of the Attorney General in New York State has become increasingly active, shifting from mostly defensive representation of New York to also encompass affirmative litigation on behalf of the state and its citizens. As newly-active state Attorneys General across the country begin to play a larger role in national politics and policymaking, the scope of the powers of the Attorney General in New York State has never been more important. This Article traces the constitutional and historical development of the At- torney General in New York State, arguing that the office retains a signifi- cant body of common law powers, many of which are underutilized. The Article concludes with a discussion of how these powers might influence the actions of the Attorney General in New York State in the future.
