To protect its profit margins, the industry is using exceptionally cruel methods to carry out these mass-killings: ventilation shutdown and water-based foam. Maple Farm Sanctuary Virtual Tour An Interactive Qualifying Project Report Submitted to the Faculty of the WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Science by Katherine Charla Sarah Payne Date: Sunday March 11, 2018 Submitted to: John Sanbonmatsu Scott Barton Abstract The purpose of this project was to create a virtual tour for Maple Farm Sanctuary (MFS), a non-profit organization who provides care/shelter to abused/neglected farm animals. We worked with MFS leadership to produce a virtual tour with the most realistic representation of the sanctuary. The tour design and content was influenced by survey/focus group feedback as well as our research on other sanctuaires outreach efforts. An interactive map with videos and educational content was the final product. 1 Acknowledgements We would like to acknowledge the following people for their contribution to this project: First, Professors John Sanbonmatsu and Scott Barton, for their guidance, support, and willingness to help with every aspect of this project. In 2019, VFAR led the successful campaign to ban foie gras in NYC, and to stop wild bird poaching. We also led the campaign to ban the use of wild animals in circuses in NYC. We look forward to working with you to win more victories for animals and make the state of New York a leader in compassionate public policy. Our mission is to elect candidates who support animal protection, lobby for stronger laws to stop animal cruelty, and hold elected officials accountable to humane voters. VFAR mobilizes public concern for animals through the political process. We know that animal protection is not only a moral issue but a bi-partisan political issue as well. Now, we invite activists and academics to join us for on March 1st-2nd, 2018 for another of our “Thinking About Animals” conferences. This time we will focus on two broad themes. First, we ask participants to address “Structural Violence and Trans-Species Social Justice.” While capitalism did not create animal exploitation, it has intensified the effects and has made this into a system of total violence that threatens all life on the planet. We encourage participants to submit papers that analyze the social structural oppression of nonhuman animals within the entangled context of speciesism, capitalism, patriarchy, racism and militarism. We take up this theme in part to launch publication of two new books: David Nibert’s monumental 2-volume edited bookAnimals, Oppression and Capitalism and New Directions in Critical Animal Studies: Toward Trans-Species Social Justice, co-edited by Atsuko Matsuoka and John Sorenson.
